“Abigail, don’t get too smug,” Adrian suddenly spoke up.
Abigail, who had been quietly sitting on the side, blinked innocently. How am I smug?
“I think this engagement is just a temporary measure by the Hawthorne family,” Adrian added.
“Adrian, what did you mean by that?” Helen perked up the moment she heard him.
Marshall also turned to look at Adrian, his face dark as he began to think. “Are you saying the Hawthorne family is stalling for time, trying to find a chance to call off the engagement?”
Adrian nodded slightly. “Lucas is dying. They need someone to bring him luck in marriage. He can’t just wake up and kick out the person who helped save his life, right? They’ll need to wait for the right moment. Otherwise, would the Hawthorne family even consider her?” Adrian gave Abigail a contemptuous glance.
Everyone turned to look at Abigail. She was skin and bones, had no figure to speak of, and even the most beautiful clothes looked like a waste on her.
They desperately ignored Abigail’s strong bone structure and kept pushing her further into the mud.
Marshall secretly nodded. He thought Adrian made sense. Even though losing the marriage alliance with the Hawthorne family was frustrating, he figured the Hawthorne family would still have to compensate the Gibson family somehow, so he started calculating again.
Abigail didn’t care to watch their ugly mouths move any longer and turned around to leave the Gibson Residence.
A black van stopped in front of her. Lena got out and respectfully opened the door for her.
Before long, the car pulled up in front of a quiet cemetery.
Abigail stood in front of a gravestone, holding a bouquet of simple daisies in her hands. On the stone were the words “Our beloved daughter, Chloe Hayes.”
She slowly crouched down and gently placed the daisies in front of the grave. In a soft voice, she said, “Don’t worry, Chloe. I’ll get revenge for you.”
Five years ago, when she had just returned to the Gibson family, Chloe was only a newly hired maid. She’d been assigned to stay by Abigail’s side and suffered just as much scorn and bullying from the others.
Chloe had a kind heart and couldn’t stand watching Abigail get mistreated. Since she was a little older, she always shielded Abigail.
She was the only person in the Gibson family who had ever shown Abigail warmth.
Just as Abigail was planning to ask her master for help and escape with Chloe, Chloe died without warning or explanation.
Daniella even framed her for Chloe’s death, and because of that, the Gibson family had her sent to an asylum.
For the past five years, she had never stopped thinking about making Daniella and every single person in the Gibson family pay for it.
Abigail slowly stood up, her eyes slightly red. “What the Gibson family owes us, I’ll take back double.”
On the way back, a light rain began to fall. Abigail leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes.
Lena drove slowly, hoping Abigail could get some rest.
“I’ll give you a list of herbs in a bit. Go to Everherb Hall and have them prepare everything according to the list and send it to the Hawthorne Mansion,” Abigail said, opening her eyes. The clarity had returned to them.
“Yes,” Lena answered quickly.
Abigail continued, “The herbs I marked on the list are rare. It might take some extra effort to get them. Tell the people at Everherb Hall that money isn’t an issue, as long as the quality is guaranteed.”
After all, Lucas had plenty of money.
“And one more thing,” Abigail added after a pause. “Please look after the Hayes family for me.”
Chloe had died in the Gibson family home. Her family probably didn’t want to see anyone from the Gibson family ever again. She figured it was best not to disturb their peaceful life.
“Yes, Ms. Gibson,” Lena replied quickly.
When Abigail returned to the Gibson house, the sound of piano music floated down from the second floor. She didn’t even have to guess – it had to be Daniella practicing in the piano room.
To be fair, Daniella was talented. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have had the guts to announce so early that she was going to study under the famous pianist, Jack Bernette.
But Abigail didn’t want her getting too full of herself.
When it came to the marriage alliance between the Hawthorne family and the Gibson family, many people shared Adrian’s view – they thought it was just a temporary arrangement from the Hawthornes. Still, there were always a few self-important “smart” people eager to suck up to the Gibson family.
Marshall took full advantage of it and basked in his newfound status within the Gibson family.
Abigail, when she found out, simply smiled.
The higher he climbed, the harder he would fall. Abigail decided to let him enjoy it for a few more days.
Two days later would be Daniella’s 18th birthday. The Gibson family was planning a huge celebration for their precious daughter, sending out invitations everywhere.
Not a single person remembered that Abigail and Daniella had been born on the same day.
The entire Gibson family was busy preparing for Daniella’s birthday party. The second and third son of the Gibson family, Boone Gibson and Conrad Gibson, had also returned from overseas that very day.
“Boone! Conrad!” Daniella saw the two men walking in through the door and ran toward them with excitement.
Boone opened his arms and caught Daniella with a spoiled smile on his face. “Dani, we’re back. Did you miss me?” he said, pinching her cheek playfully.
Daniella leaned into his arms like a spoiled child. “Of course I did.”
Conrad reached out and patted her head, then glanced sideways at Abigail, his tone meaningful. “Don’t worry, Dani. Now that I’m back, I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”
Abigail raised an eyebrow at that. She hadn’t forgotten – when she first came back to the Gibson family, Daniella had a nightmare because she was scared of being sent away. And just because of that, Conrad had thrown her into a pool even though she couldn’t swim. He even had the maids stand by with bamboo poles to beat her if she tried to climb out.
She had almost died in that pool.
“Well, some people really don’t know their place. A lunatic trying to climb the social ladder? How could she even dream of marrying into the Hawthorne family?” Boone sneered, his gaze toward Abigail filled with pure hatred.
Abigail’s eyes darkened. It was Boone who had come up with the plan to send her to the asylum. Just thinking of those lightless days locked inside made her fists clenched tight, her nails digging into her palms. The pain only reminded her more clearly of how cruel these people really were.
“What? Do you think staying quiet will save you?” Boone crossed his arms and looked down on her arrogantly. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll go cancel the engagement with the Hawthorne family and return it to Dani.”
Abigail let out a cold laugh. “I don’t steal or lie.
I’m not like certain people who can’t produce their own research and steal other people’s work instead.”
Conrad’s face instantly turned pale. A flash of panic crossed his eyes before he shouted in rage, “You… You’re talking nonsense!”
Does she know something? No, that’s impossible. Abigail is just a hick from the countryside. She has to be bluffing. Yes, that must be it.
“Don’t bother with her, Conrad. She’s just a madwoman biting whoever she sees.” Boone sneered, glancing at Abigail with contempt.
