“You’ve got your own house on fire, and you still have time to worry about others?” Abigail’s voice turned icy as she looked at Boone. “I wonder what your fans would think if they knew what you’ve been hiding. How would you survive that as a famous celebrity?”
Boone broke into a cold sweat. “What… What do you know?”
He had gone abroad precisely to escape the fallout of a certain scandal. His agent said everything had been handled.
So how does Abigail know? And how much does she know?
Seeing Boone and Conrad cornered, Daniella quickly jumped in. “Boone, Conrad, don’t listen to her. She’s only been back a few days. There’s no way she knows anything. She probably overheard some maid talking nonsense and ran with it.”
Boone and Conrad snapped out of it. Right, Abigail is just some clueless country bumpkin. There’s no way she knows anything. Can’t believe we actually let her get in our heads. She’s just a girl we can twist and crush any way we want. Nothing to worry about.
“So what if she’s engaged to Lucas? Now she thinks she can throw her weight around in this house?” Boone’s arrogance returned as he scoffed, “Pathetic.”
“Hah, wait till she gets dumped and becomes an unwanted stray – she’ll be crying her eyes out.” Conrad still felt humiliated for being rattled earlier. “If Lucas wakes up and finds out he’s engaged to some country hick, he’ll break it off faster than you can blink.”
Just then, the butler walked in. “Mr. Boone,
Mr. Conrad – Mr. Hawthorne’s assistant, Mr. Andrew, is here.”
Andrew was Lucas’ right-hand man. He usually stayed close by his side, and almost no one in Stonebridge’s business world didn’t recognize him.
Just like people often said, “Even the lowest-ranking official at the top holds real power.” Even though he was just an assistant, no one dared to underestimate Andrew.
“What is Mr. Andrew doing here at this time?” Conrad asked, puzzled.
“Don’t tell me he’s here to call off the engagement?” Daniella muttered under her breath – but just loud enough for everyone around to hear.
Boone and Conrad exchanged a look, clearly ready for a show. “Let him in.”
Soon, Andrew walked inside. Conrad hurried to greet him. “Mr. Andrew, what brings you here in person today? Is there something you need to say?”
“Exactly, no need to hold back – just say it,” Boone added eagerly, practically itching to see Abigail thrown into the mud.
Andrew glanced at the two with a strange look, then brushed past them and stopped in front of Abigail. His tone was respectful. “Ms. Gibson, I wonder if you have time now. Mr. Hawthorne sent me to bring you to the Hawthorne Mansion.”
Lucas wanted to see Abigail and he’d sent his most trusted aide to personally fetch her!
Daniella’s jealousy spiked so sharply she cracked her own fingernail, not even noticing the pain. Her eyes stayed locked on Abigail, as if she wanted to burn holes through her.
Just moments ago, Conrad and Boone had been mocking Abigail, and now they were the ones slapped in the face.
Abigail stood up slowly. “I’ve got time. Let’s go.”
She couldn’t be bothered to deal with these three lunatics anymore, and headed straight for the door.
Andrew had sensed something was off the moment he walked in. Now, without sparing another glance at the trio, he followed Abigail out.
Boone, furious, kicked over a nearby chair. His face twisted with rage. “What kind of witchcraft did Abigail use to make Lucas treat her differently?”
Conrad wasn’t convinced. “I don’t know. Maybe Lucas called her over just to call off the engagement.”
“True. Lucas can have any beauty he wants. Why would he go for some penniless nobody like her?” Boone’s expression relaxed slightly.
Daniella stood off to the side, a sharp pain stinging where her nail had broken – but it was nothing compared to the jealousy and hatred burning inside her.
“Boone, Conrad, you two have to help Abigail,” Daniella cried, furrowing her brows as tears rolled down. “If Lucas really breaks off the engagement, what’s going to happen to her?”
“That’d be the best outcome. She’d become the laughingstock of all Stonebridge. And no one would dare marry a woman dumped by Lucas. She’d have to go back to the countryside and marry some random farmer.”
Conrad could already picture the day and chuckled darkly. “Serves her right.”
“Forget about her, Dani.” Boone gently draped an arm around Daniella’s shoulders and led her out. “Come on, let me show you the gift I brought you.”
With Andrew by her side this time, Abigail entered the Hawthorne Mansion without any trouble. But Lucas no longer lived in the main house. He’d moved to a secluded courtyard.
Andrew stepped forward and knocked lightly. “Mr. Hawthorne, Ms. Gibson is here.”
“Come in,” came Lucas’ calm, cool voice from inside.
Abigail walked in and saw him seated in a wheelchair, back to her, staring out the window, deep in thought.
He heard her footsteps and slowly turned his chair to face her.
Abigail didn’t flinch. She walked straight up to him, reached out, and gently tilted his chin up. Her beautiful eyes locked on his with unwavering focus.
Lucas hadn’t expected her to be so bold. Surprise flickered in his eyes for a brief second – but he quickly returned to his usual calm, unshaken self, just sitting there quietly, letting her do as she pleased.
Compared to Lucas’ calmness, Andrew was so stunned that he almost tripped over himself.
What did I just see? Is Ms. Gibson flirting with Mr. Hawthorne?
But then, looking at Abigail’s tiny, bean-sprout-like figure, he felt a bit less human. She was still just an 18 years old kid.
What a sin!
“Not bad, you’re recovering well.” After looking long enough, Abigail let go of him and said, “In that case, I’ll start giving you acupuncture and detox today.”
Abigail spread the needles out on the table. Andrew looked at the dozens of needles, varying in length, and immediately felt his scalp tingle.
Lucas glanced at the needles, his expression unchanged. He nodded slightly. “What do you need me to do?”
“Take your clothes off and lie down.”
Abigail’s words were blunt, and Andrew didn’t know what to say anymore.
But over there, Lucas had already stood up from his wheelchair, starting to unbutton his shirt. His movements were smooth, without a hint of hesitation or awkwardness.
Andrew quickly swallowed the words that were about to come out of his mouth. Since the person involved had no objections, there was no reason for him to intervene.
Seeing Lucas already taking off his outer pants, ready to remove his undergarments,
Abigail turned her head just in time. She blinked and watched Lucas’ movements, yet showed no signs of embarrassment or awkwardness. Unhurriedly, she said, “You don’t need to take this off.”
She thought she was quite humane, at least leaving Lucas some dignity.
Upon hearing this, Lucas paused, then lightly grunted in acknowledgment before stopping the action of removing his clothes. He kept his undergarments on and neatly lay down on the bed, waiting quietly for Abigail to begin the acupuncture.
