She slightly lifted her chin, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. Even the way she looked at Abigail now had a touch of triumph. “Dani is my daughter. Her talent and beauty are unmatched. When she marries into the Hawthorne family and becomes the lady of the family, she’ll surely treat you, the widow, well.”

In the distance, Daniella and Mason seemed to have heard the noise from this side and quickly pulled apart.

Daniella adjusted her collar and hair, stepping out from the shadows. Upon seeing Abigail and her mother, she quietly sighed in relief.

“Mom, Abigail, are you both out here to sober up?” Daniella’s cheeks flushed slightly, and her lipstick was smudged without her realizing it.

Helen saw Daniella and immediately wore a loving, gentle smile, completely different from the fierce look she had earlier when facing Abigail. “Dani, why didn’t you put on a jacket before coming out? Be careful, you might catch a cold.”

As she spoke, she affectionately walked forward, holding Daniella’s hand tightly and teasing, “Look at you, your lipstick is all smeared. Go and touch up your makeup.”

Daniella, upon hearing this, instinctively raised her hand to touch her lips, and her face turned bright red. She shyly lowered her head. “Mom…”

“Hahaha! Dani, don’t be shy!” Helen laughed even harder.

Abigail, forced to watch the mother-daughter display, rolled her eyes in irritation.

Only then did Daniella notice Abigail’s presence and turned her gaze to Helen. “Mom, about Abigail’s marriage…”

“It’s settled,” Helen glanced at Abigail. “Madam Aubrey wants everything to be simple so she can marry Mr. Hawthorne as soon as possible.”

Daniella’s eyes brightened. That meant Lucas didn’t have much time left. Thinking about the promise Mason had made to her earlier, she quietly rejoiced.

Earlier at the banquet, Aubrey had only appeared for a short while, but she exuded an impressive aura. The diamond bracelet on her wrist alone was worth a small fortune.

Daniella imagined a future where she could live that way, wishing Lucas would die immediately.

Abigail saw the expression on her face and knew exactly what she was thinking. She was sure to be disappointed. A sense of relief washed over her as she waited for the drama to unfold.

The Hawthorne family’s banquet ended quickly. The Gibson family, although unaware of what had happened, had achieved their goals and left happily.

The Hawthorne Mansion remained brightly lit, with some rejoicing and others worried.

Lucas, who had been diagnosed with little time left, had regained consciousness.

“Benjamin, how is Lucas?” Lucas’ grandma, Tessa Whitmore, gripped her cane tightly, her eyes full of anxiety and anticipation, her voice trembling slightly.

The doctor, Benjamin Hughes, stunned, stared at Lucas in disbelief. “This is truly a miracle! Lucas’ condition has stabilized, and his vital signs are gradually returning to normal. With proper care, he will slowly recover.”

It was hard to believe that the person who had been given a life-threatening diagnosis just the day before had not only woken up in a single day but was also rapidly recovering. This was a medical miracle.

Upon hearing this, Tessa cried tears of joy, clasping her hands together and muttering, “Thank goodness! May the universe bless him!”

Andrew, standing nearby, was also moved to tears. He quickly walked to Lucas’ bedside, his voice choked with emotion. “Mr. Hawthorne, thank goodness you’re okay. You’re alright!”

Even though Abigail had already said Lucas was fine, it wasn’t until Benjamin’s diagnosis that Andrew finally felt relieved.

Mason’s face was pale, his back teeth clenched, but he forced a smile and said, “Lucas, you’re awake, thank goodness.”

Lucas’ sharp gaze locked onto Mason, and a faint smile curled on his lips. However, the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “Mason, I heard you’ve been handling the company affairs while I’ve been out. Now that I’m awake, I suppose you won’t have to work so hard anymore.”

Mason could not have failed to understand the sarcasm in his words. He had indeed been at the company recently, but all those people were nothing but Lucas’ lackeys, pretending to be respectful while undermining him behind his back.

Now that Lucas had awakened, all his schemes had been thwarted.

Mason could not accept this.

He could not stand to see Lucas triumphant. With a quick glance, he smirked and said, “Lucas, Mom heard you woke up and was so happy she immediately went out. She said she was going to Silverveil Abbey to personally thank Master Lucian.”

Lucas leaned against the headboard, unmoved, his eyelids slightly lowered, casting a shadow over his long lashes that concealed the emotions in his eyes.

“Alright,” Tessa spoke up just in time to shoo them away, “Lucas just woke up and needs to rest. Please, all of you leave.”

“Yes, Madam Tessa.” Everyone quickly left the room.

Tessa stayed in the room for half an hour before officially announcing the engagement between Lucas and Abigail, stating that they would marry when Abigail turned twenty.

This news caused a storm in Stonebridge. All the major families sent people to gather information.

Everyone knew that Lucas had been on the brink of death, and the Gibson family’s daughter was supposed to marry him to ward off his bad luck. But the whole point was for it to happen as soon as possible. They couldn’t understand why it had suddenly turned into an engagement.

It was important to note that many people had already chosen sides during this time.

Fortunately, the Hawthorne family had no intention of hiding it, so the news of Lucas’ awakening spread quickly.

Those who had picked sides were now restless, and just the thought of Lucas’ methods made them too scared to sleep.

“What? Lucas woke up?” Of course, the Gibson family received the news as well.

The butler hesitated, glancing at Abigail before continuing, “The Hawthorne family also publicly announced that Mr. Hawthorne and Ms. Gibson are engaged and will marry when Ms. Gibson turns twenty.”

“Which Ms. Gibson?” Helen didn’t react at first, but then she turned to Abigail and immediately became furious. “Abigail?”

“Yes,” the butler answered, his voice firm.

“Dani is the only Ms. Gibson,” she immediately stood up, “No way, I’m going to the Hawthorne Mansion.”

With Lucas awake, no one cared about Mason anymore.

“Sit down!” Marshall’s voice was low and authoritative. “Do you think the Hawthorne Mansion is some place you can just visit whenever you want?”

In front of the Hawthorne family, they had no say.

“But we can’t let that b*tch marry into the Hawthorne family!” Helen paced anxiously.

Marshall, however, had a different perspective. He didn’t care which daughter married into the Hawthorne family; in the end, the Gibson family would benefit.

Daniella had been quiet, but secretly, her fingers were digging into her palms, drawing blood. She glanced over and, with a shift of her eyes, comforted Helen, “Mom, don’t worry. Abigail will be like me. Even if she gets married, she’ll still help the Gibson family.”

“Hmph, she’d better not go against us,” Helen muttered dismissively.

Marshall immediately fell deep in thought.

Seeing that she had gotten the response she wanted, Daniella’s lips subtly curled into a smile as she silently rejoiced.

She knew her father, Marshall, all too well. He was a man who valued profits above all else. As long as he believed that Abigail marrying into the Hawthorne family could be harmful to the Gibson family, he would find a way to stop the marriage, or at least gain more benefits for himself in the process.
