He studied Abigail in silence for a moment before speaking in a quiet, even tone. “Ms. Gibson, you expect me to believe you with nothing to back it up?”

Abigail raised one finger and pressed it gently to his lips. “I just saved your life. Don’t forget that.”

Lucas remembered the kiss that had jolted him awake. He could still taste the faint tang of blood on his tongue.

Abigail smiled, a hint of smugness in her eyes. “If I hadn’t given you my blood, you’d be dead right now. Isn’t that proof enough of my sincerity?”

Lucas’ gaze flickered. “You mean your blood saved me?”

“Of course not,” Abigail rolled her eyes. “The poison in your body is a mix of more than a dozen toxins. It’s been in your system for a while now – eating away at your energy channels. Tell me, before you passed out, did your whole body feel like it was crawling with ants? Painful, especially at night, right? It feels so bad that you couldn’t sleep. Am I right?”

Abigail’s words made Lucas’ eyes narrow, and the painful memories he had deliberately buried surged up from the depths of his heart.

At first, he had chalked it up to overwork and didn’t think much of it. But as time went on, the pain became more frequent and intense – until one day, without warning, he lost consciousness.

“My blood only woke you up temporarily,” Abigail continued. “If you want to fully detox, it’ll take more effort. So, how about we work together?”

“Work together?” Lucas’ deep voice broke the silence, tinged with suspicion. “Ms. Gibson, what kind of deal are you proposing?”

Abigail tilted her head, thinking for a moment. “Within six months, I’ll cure you. In return, you’ll help me with three things.”

Lucas had already started to believe her when she accurately described his symptoms. On top of that, she had just saved his life with her blood.

“What three things?” Lucas was a sharp businessman – especially cautious in moments like these.

Abigail frowned slightly as she thought. “The first is, the Hawthorne Group must not cooperate with the Gibson family. As for the other two, I haven’t decided yet. But you have my word, I won’t ask you to do anything against your conscience or harmful to your company.”

“The Hawthorne Group and the Gibson family?” Lucas frowned in confusion. As far as he knew, the Gibson family wasn’t nearly qualified to work with the Hawthorne Group.

Abigail pointed at Andrew. “You tell him.”

Andrew gave Abigail a strange look, then turned to Lucas and explained, “Mr. Hawthorne, you’ve been unconscious for a long time. The doctors even issued a critical notice. Madam Tessa was desperate and agreed to a rushed marriage ceremony, hoping it would help you ward off your bad luck.”

No one had expected it would actually work.

What Andrew found odd was that Abigail was from the Gibson family, yet her first condition was to block a deal between her own family and the Hawthornes. Doesn’t she realize her family has sent her here to marry into power and gain resources?

Abigail winked at Lucas and smiled. “Told you I wasn’t lying.”

Lucas raised an eyebrow. He knew she was referring to her earlier claim about being his fiancée.

“Fine.” Lucas stared at her, his gaze thoughtful and searching. “I agree to the deal. But Ms. Gibson – you’d better give this your all. Because even if I don’t make it, there are countless ways to make you pay the price.” His voice was still weak, but the authority in it left no room for doubt.

Abigail smiled faintly, her confidence unmistakable. “Mr. Hawthorne, you don’t need to worry. I wouldn’t have made this offer if I wasn’t sure I could deliver. But healing you won’t happen overnight. I’ll need your full cooperation during the process.”

As she spoke, she slipped off the bed, walked to the table, picked up a glass, and poured herself a glass of water. Her movements were light and casual, as if she hadn’t just threatened the man minutes ago.

“You should investigate the people around you,” she added, turning to look at him. “The poison’s been building up for a long time. It has to be someone close to you. I’d rather not see the man I just saved poisoned all over again.”

“Understood,” Lucas replied, his eyes dark and unreadable. “I won’t let your blood go to waste.”

Now that everything was settled, it was time for Abigail to leave. She’d snuck off for too long – Helen would definitely yell at her when she got back.

She walked over to the window, glanced back at Lucas, and waved. “Goodbye, Mr. Hawthorne.” With that, she climbed out the window and disappeared.

Andrew blinked, stunned. He ran to the window, but Abigail was already gone.

“Cough!” Lucas coughed a few times, his face looking slightly pale.

Andrew hurriedly turned back from the window and walked quickly to the bedside, his face full of worry. “Mr. Hawthorne, how are you feeling? Is anything bothering you?”

Lucas gently shook his head. “I’m fine. I just woke up, and my body feels a little weak.”

Andrew, hearing this, was so relieved that he almost cried. “Mr. Hawthorne, it’s so good that you’re awake! You’ve been unconscious for so long, and the doctors were helpless. Madam Tessa was so worried.” As he spoke, he gently wiped the tears from his eyes with his sleeve.

Andrew had been brought back to the Hawthorne family by Lucas when he was six, and they had practically grown up together. He had always considered Lucas his most important family member.

“By the way, I need to tell Madam Tessa you’re awake. She’ll be so happy!” Andrew said, almost overwhelmed with joy.

“Wait a moment, listen to me first…” Lucas briefly outlined his plans. After he finished speaking, he appeared a bit tired.

After all, he had just woken up and was still extremely weak.

“Alright, I’ll handle it right away,” Andrew nodded repeatedly. “Mr. Hawthorne, you should rest. I’ll send more people outside.”

Especially near the windows; he hadn’t forgotten that Abigail had climbed through the window.

Abigail returned to the lobby on the first floor and bumped into Adrian, who had come to find her.

Adrian grabbed Abigail’s arm, his face dark and his forehead veins pulsing. “Abigail, do you think my warning was just for show? I can send you to asylum once, I can do it again.”

“Heh!” Abigail snorted, breaking free from his grip and mocking him. “Mr. Adrian, how could I not believe what you say?”

Helen quickly approached, lowering her voice. “Abigail, if you want to embarrass yourself, go back to the countryside. This isn’t a place for you to cause trouble.”

She turned to Adrian and said, “I’ll handle this. Your dad is waiting to introduce you to a few executives, don’t waste any more time.”

“Fine,” Adrian shot Abigail a warning glance and walked off in another direction.

Helen pulled Abigail into a secluded corner. Her smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of anger. She raised her hand as if to slap her. “You b*tch, you did this on purpose, didn’t you? Do you have any idea how important this marriage is to the Gibson family?”

Abigail reacted quickly, grabbing Helen’s wrist and coldly staring at her. “Your family always wants to hit people. That’s a sickness. It needs treatment.”

Helen was momentarily taken aback by Abigail’s gaze. She hadn’t expected Abigail, who had always been obedient before, to become so tough after returning from the asylum.

After a moment, Helen forcefully yanked her hand away from Abigail’s grip. “You’d better be careful. Who do you think would want to marry a lunatic? Just be glad that you can help the Hawthorne family to ward off the bad luck.”

“Is marrying into the Hawthorne family paving the way for your precious daughter, Dani?” Abigail sneered, the curve of her smile bitter, though her eyes revealed only endless sorrow.

This person is my own mother.

“You!” Helen was about to scold her but stopped when she noticed the strange look in Abigail’s eyes. Following her gaze, she saw two blurry figures in the distance, standing close together.

Daniella was her daughter, whom she had raised with her own hands. She knew her figure well, and the other man had to be Mason.

A proud expression instantly spread across Helen’s face, as all her plans were falling into place.
