Chapter 495 – The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion

Despite his assurance, Evan felt that something wasn’t quite right. It had been half a month since they’d come back to Monaerim. Even if Eustace and the others didn’t have much influence abroad, they shouldn’t have failed to locate him by now.

“Send someone to check if Eustace is still in the country,” Evan ordered. He needed to know where Eustace was.

Howard nodded and left to do as he was told.

After he left, Evan sat in his study, sighing helplessly. “Danika, what can I do to make you want to stay here?”

Two days later, Danika was trapped on the island again and couldn’t get out, so she naturally couldn’t contact Eustace. She was very anxious. Plus, Evan had become busy these days, but she didn’t know what he was up to. She was worried that Eustace’s whereabouts would be discovered since they were in a foreign country and on Evan’s turf.

Just when she was worrying about whether she should find a chance to go to Duxdence, Olivia came looking for her.

“Tell me, how much money do you need to leave Evan?’ Olivia couldn’t stand it anymore. Although Evan had warned her several times not to bother Danika, she couldn’t bear seeing the two of them being together day in and day out. She knew that if she didn’t take action quickly, she wouldn’t have any chance with Evan.

When Danika heard that, she didn’t come to her senses for a long time. How much money? It seemed that Olivia was clueless about her true identity. Well, it was kind of expected. Evan wanted her to stay there and naturally wanted to separate Danika from her past.

Olivia didn’t know what was going on in Danika’s mind. Seeing that she wasn’t speaking, she simply assumed that Danika was being arrogant. “Don’t think that Evan really likes you that much! He was just momentarily charmed by you. When he comes to his senses, you won’t be able to get anything from him.”

“Do you want me to stay away from Evan?” Danika asked.

“Of course! You’re not worthy of him at all.” Olivia nodded without hesitation. That was obvious. Why would she bother saying all this to her if she didn’t want Danika to leave?

Danika lowered her head and was in deep contemplation for a moment. When she looked up again, she felt as if Olivia was her savior.

Nonetheless, she tried her best not to show it too obviously. “Is that so? But Evan likes me so much.”

“Evan doesn’t like you! You bewitched him somehow!” Olivia couldn’t accept this fact.

“Really? Does he like you then?” Danika pretended to be confused and deliberately hit on her sore spot.

Olivia thought about it for a moment, and then she nodded. “You’re right. Evan likes me. It’s just that we’ve been arguing lately, so he found you to deliberately make me jealous.”

“Really? That’s too much!” Danika immediately pretended to be very aggrieved.

She felt that her acting must be very bad, but there was nothing else she could do. Olivia, who was trying every means to make Danika leave, didn’t pay attention to how implausible her actions were at all.

Ten Million?

Olivia cleared her throat and said seriously, “So, I’m giving you money now and asking you to leave for your own good. Although Evan’s behavior isn’t right, I’m compensating you with some money so you’re not losing out.”

Danika pretended to be wronged and asked softly, “How much money can you give me? I don’t want too little. Although Evan doesn’t like me, he never hesitated to spend money on me.”

That made Olivia so angry that she clenched her teeth. “One million!” Olivia spat.

Danika then looked at her haughtily and said, “Evan spent more than that when he took me shopping the other day.”

“How much do you want then?” Olivia asked. She wasn’t short of money. In fact, she’d made a lot of money while working for Evan all these years.

“Add another zero to the price,” Danika said casually, sounding so unbothered and carefree, as if ten million was nothing to her.

Olivia was provoked and pointed at her while asking, “Ten million? Who do you think you are?”

“If you can’t afford it, then forget it. Evan is treating me well now, so I don’t really want to leave,” Danika said, getting up to leave.

Seeing her about to leave, Olivia became flustered. “Wait!”

“Anything else you want to say?” Danika stopped and turned to look at her. In fact, she didn’t really want to leave either.

Olivia gritted her teeth and finally nodded in agreement. “Okay. But once you take the money, you have to disappear from Evan’s sight immediately.”

“That’s not a problem. You have to figure out a way to get me off this island, or I won’t be able to leave.” Danika thought it would be better to make Olivia come up with a solution for her to escape since she was more familiar with the place.

Olivia frowned at Danika’s request but thought it made sense. If she didn’t help, Danika would never be able to leave this place. Besides, she couldn’t feel at ease without personally seeing her off.

“Okay. You stay put. After I make arrangements, I’ll have someone notify you,” Olivia instructed as she turned to leave. She had to think of a way to send Danika away without Evan knowing.

Suddenly, she had a brilliant idea-if she could just send Danika away and kill her in a place where nobody was around, then she could claim that Danika had escaped on her own. That way, she wouldn’t have to spend a single penny and could still get rid of her. The more Olivia thought about it, the more feasible the plan seemed to her.

Danika watched her leave and wondered what she was thinking. She had her own plan too. Since Olivia was going to get her off the island, she planned to make arrangements with Eustace in Duxdence for a secret departure. She figured the salesgirl at the clothing store in Duxdence could probably contact Eustace.

That night, instead of eating as usual, Danika sat at the dining table to wait for Evan to return. Half an hour later, the sound of a private jet could be heard outside the castle, which meant that Evan had returned. These past few days, he’d been flying off in the private jet every morning and returning at night.

If they weren’t on an island, those past few days would have been the best opportunity to leave since Evan wasn’t around to check on her every day. But now that she’d struck a deal with Olivia, Danika believed she would find a way to help her leave the island.

“Didn’t I tell you not to wait for me? If you’re hungry, go ahead and eat,” Evan said as he walked into the dining room and saw Danika waiting for him. He was touched by her gesture.

Danika smiled and replied, ‘It’s okay. I’m not very hungry. It’s more fun to eat together when you come back.”

Evan felt guilty when she said that. “You don’t have any friends here, so you must be lonely.”

Danika smiled and didn’t say anything.

“Okay, hear me out. Why don’t you come with me to Duxdence tomorrow morning? I’ll have someone take you around for a tour,” Evan suggested. He didn’t think it was a good idea for Danika to stay cooped up in the castle all the time since it would eventually lead to resentment on her part.

Not Interested

Upon hearing that, Danika was truly shocked. She had deliberately waited there to find an opportunity for Evan to take her to Duxdence, but before she could even mention anything about it, he’d taken the initiative to offer her an outing.

Seeing how she kept mum, Evan thought she was still upset and continued, “Danika, I know you want to go back to Clusia, but…I really hope you can stay here. So, can you at least try? If after some time, you really can’t get used to living here, then we can discuss going back.”

Danika came to her senses after a while and nodded in agreement. “Alright then.”

Upon hearing that, Evan breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, Danika didn’t insist on going back. Otherwise, he really wouldn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to make their relationship too tense, and he knew that Danika was the type to be persuaded rather than coerced.

“Let’s eat,” Danika said. Perhaps because her mood had improved, she spoke to Evan with a bit more patience.

Evan didn’t know Danika’s plan; he had even hoped that Danika would get used to it there and eventually agree to stay. Unfortunately, he was destined to never see that day.

“You seem pretty busy lately. What are you working on?” Danika asked casually.

Evan thought about it for a moment and didn’t withhold anything from her.” After I left, there have been a few traitors among us that caused some trouble. I’ve been dealing with them.”

Danika nodded, not really interested in the specifics.

“Actually, I haven’t taken any mercenary business in a long time. Now that I have my own company with my subordinates, it’s not like before.” Evan was worried that Danika might be biased against him, as he knew she disapproved of doing illegal things.

Upon hearing that, Danika was briefly stunned and wondered why he had purposely told her all that. She’d never shown an interest in any of his affairs at all.

However, upon looking up and meeting Evan’s gaze, Danika instantly understood the meaning behind his words. “Oh, is that so? That’s great.”

“Yeah. I’ll slowly make sure everything is on the right track.” By then, there would be nothing to hide.

Danika smiled, but in reality, she was itching to ask Evan what he meant by” the right track.” Was he no longer taking up the mercenary business but trafficking drugs instead? She hadn’t investigated it thoroughly, but she could roughly guess what he was up to from the hushed conversations of the people on the island.

She didn’t say anything because she knew that Evan wasn’t benevolent or kind. Although he hadn’t done anything to her yet, it was only because she had nothing to threaten him with. If she knew too much, it would be even more impossible for him to let her leave.

After dinner, Evan took Danika for a walk by the seaside. Sometimes, Danika felt that if she hadn’t been forced to come, she would have really liked it there. After experiencing the busy life in Bardoff City, she could truly appreciate how rare these leisurely days were.

Unfortunately, the timing to enjoy something like this wasn’t right for her. Standing by the sea, Danika couldn’t help but say, “The sunset is beautiful.”

“Do you like it? If you do, you can see it every day from now on,” Evan replied.

Danika laughed dryly. Even if she could see the beautiful scenery every day, she would still tire of it. She looked into the distance and changed the subject.

“Why don’t you like Olivia? She’s pretty and loyal to you.” Danika thought that if Evan liked Olivia, they could be happy together.

“I’m not interested in her,” Evan responded. His answer was straightforward, making Danika feel helpless.

“Then what do you like about me?” she asked.

Going Crazy With Jealousy

The question seemed to be difficult for Evan to answer, and he didn’t give an answer for a long time. Just when Danika thought he wouldn’t answer, Evan spoke up, “Danika, you know, sometimes liking someone is just a feeling. It’s a feeling that cannot be described, and you can’t even control it. But when that person appears, you just know that she’s the one you want, n

For Evan, Danika was that person.

Although Danika had confessed to him in the past, Evan’s impression of her gradually faded, and he almost forgot about her until he met Gilbert. For some reason, when Gilbert suggested he go back to pursue Danika, he agreed without much hesitation. When he saw Danika, he knew that she was the person he’d been looking for all along. Humans’ feelings worked in strange ways like that sometimes- he couldn’t even explain it himself.

Danika listened as her lips twitched. It wasn’t anything as magical as Evan made it out to be. In Danika’s opinion, it was either falling in love over time or just superficial attraction. As for which category Evan belonged to, she wasn’t sure yet.

“It’s getting late. Let’s go back and rest. Remember to get up early tomorrow. I’ll take you to Duxdence.” Evan snapped out of his daze, not really minding Danika’s lack of response to his philosophy about love.

The two turned around and walked back.

Inside the castle, Olivia saw everything. She was very close to going crazy with jealousy. Since Danika arrived, she’d never been alone with Evan at all. Even when they were together for missions outside, he would take out his phone from time to time to chat with Danika. Olivia felt like Danika was drawing Evan away from her even when she wasn’t physically around.

She took a deep breath and tried to calm down. In two days, she would be able to get everything arranged. By then, she would send Danika off the island and find a chance to deal with her in Duxdence. After that, she could finally cease worrying. “I’ll let you prance around for a few more days, Danika. Very soon, you’ll be out of my way,” Olivia thought sinisterly.

Inside a small villa by the seaside in Duxdence, Eustace looked at the gathered intelligence with his brow furrowed. The situation was very unfavorable. This was Evan’s territory, and even if he could get onto the island, he wouldn’t be able to bring Danika out of the city.

The best way was to do everything quietly and take Danika away before Evan could react, as it would give them more time to escape. But how could he get Danika off the island? Eustace looked toward the ship that transported goods to the island. It seemed like the only option.

He had to study it further to ensure that everything would go smoothly. He was afraid that if Evan discovered his plan, he would abandon all reason and choose to destroy Danika so that no one else could have her. Eustace couldn’t let that happen at all costs.

Both Eustace and Danika didn’t sleep well that night. Eustace spent the entire night thinking about feasible solutions, while Danika was too skittish. As long as she could successfully pass her message to Eustace that day, they would be halfway to leaving the place.

But what about the salesgirl? Was she really working for Eustace? Although she’d passed a message to Danika once, Danika still felt uneasy and doubtful. But now, besides her, Danika had no other way to contact Eustace, so she had to take the chance.

She woke up early, wrote everything carefully on a note, and tucked it into her clothes. When she got to Duxdence, she only needed to hand the note to the salesgirl without saying a word. Danika believed the plan would go without a hitch because Evan wasn’t suspicious of her yet.
