She nodded.
Eustace sighed.
“Dr.Gaarder is not going to be around Bardoff City forever. He’s leaving today. That’s why I brought him over.I didn’t expect that…”
He did not expect Evan to do him dirty by calling Danika home.
Danika glanced at Eustace, seemingly reading his mind.
“Even if he refuses to comply, you can’t force things on him.”
“I just wanted to verify if he’s really injured,” he answered.
Then, he added, “One of your kidnappers fell into my hands, and he’s a foreigner. You should know what I mean by now.”
Impossible
Danika was taken aback once more. She was no fool—there must be a reason why Eustace emphasized the background of the kidnapper.
Staring at him in disbelief, she finally blurted out, “Do you suspect Evan of planning my kidnapping?”
“More accurately, I suspect he orchestrated the whole thing to make you stay by his side after saving your life.”
There was no good reason for Evan to kidnap Danika, but what if that was never the goal? Right now, it seemed that Evan had gotten what he wanted.
“Impossible!” she said without thinking.
“That doesn’t sound like Evan at all.”
Eustace had wanted to tell her that Evan was no saint, but he felt upset upon seeing how firmly she trusted Evan.
“Maybe. But for him to be innocent, he has to be recovering from real injuries.”
“Alright. I got it.I’ll talk to him and get him to do a checkup at a Bardoff City hospital,” she suggested, thinking that having Dr.Gaarder around was unnecessary.
Eustace knew there was no point arguing because Danika wouldn’t allow him to do as he wished. He turned around and gave the doctor an apologetic look.
“Sorry for the trouble all this while.I’ll get someone to drive you to the airport.”
“No worries.”
Dr.Gaarder didn’t mind it at all.
After bidding them farewell, he left.
Danika didn’t feel better after Dr.Gaarder’s departure. She knew what Eustace was thinking, but she refused to believe that Evan was the type of guy to pull dirty tricks.
“Don’t worry about Evan.I’ll make him go for a checkup.”
With that, she went into the villa.
He watched as she walked away from him.He had the urge to say something, but he was silent until the end.
Whatever.
Eustace decided that his priority was to obtain solid evidence.
Any argument at this point was a meaningless guess.
In the next few days, Danika was plagued by conflicted feelings in the next few days, but she did not immediately force Evan to go for a checkup.
As usual, she took care of him as though nothing had happened.
Eustace fell back into the routine of calling her after she retired to her bedroom.
They were in constant contact, although they weren’t dating.
One day, Danika retired to her room after sending Evan back to his.
She was expecting a call from Eustace after she switched on the lights, just like the days before.
To her dismay, she had yet to receive a call ten minutes after the lights were on.
She stood up and walked to her bedside.
There, she noticed the lights from Eustace’s study.
He was clearly home.
Why wouldn’t he call her, then? Perhaps, he was occupied.
She stopped worrying and went for a shower.
At first, she thought he’d be done with work after she got out of the shower, but she was surprised to find no missed calls from him.
She was somehow worried about him, so she called him instead. She waited, but no one picked up, which fueled her anxiety.
She had wanted to call Old Mr.Quincey and request that he check on Eustace in the study, but she remembered that the old man had gone home to Parrington a few days ago.
Eustace was alone in his villa.
Frowning, she made another call to him.
He still did not pick up.
This time, instead of waiting, she put on her coat and headed toward his villa.
Waiting for the Right Timing
Danika held the spare key to Eustace’s villa.
In fact, it was Eustace who insisted on giving her the key, telling her to make herself at home at his place.
At that time, she thought he was being too much, but now, she felt he was wise to do so.
She entered the villa and rushed into the study, where she expected to find him buried in work.
However, she opened the door to find him sprawling on the floor unconscious. She was momentarily shocked and failed to calm herself.
“Eustace!”
She hurried over to him.He appeared to have fainted.
When he heard her voice, he stirred a little and had a baffled look on his face upon seeing her in person.
“Danika? You…”
“Are you sick? Where?” she questioned as she observed the frown on his face and how he pressed against his abdomen.
He forced a smile and tried to put on a relaxed look.
“I-I’m fine.”
“Eustace Quincey!”
She looked furious.
‘Do you want to die?”
“D-don’t be angry.I have a bit of pain in my stomach.”
He had long suffered from digestive issues.
Before he met Danika, he habitually lived a life with an irregular schedule.
In the past, he would have felt better after taking the meds.
But he didn’t expect to faint from severe stomach pain this time. She helped him up from the floor.
“Can you walk? I’ll send you to the hospital.”
“It’s fine.I’ll just take some meds.”
He didn’t like going to the hospital and refused to move.
Too bad Danika didn’t consider his opinion. She supported him as they walked out of the study.
Then, she helped him into the car before getting on and speeding to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Evan was standing behind a curtain in his villa.
After Danika and Eustace left, he finally emerged from behind the curtain, went onto the balcony, and stared in the direction of Danika’s car.
“Boss, it’s meaningless to go on like this.Miss Zellweger can’t cut her ties with Eustace Quincey,”
Howard remarked.
He spoke the facts not to provoke Evan but to wake Evan up to reality.
