A few watching parents shook their heads, sighing inwardly. They thought Robert had gone too far, bullying Jenarth like this.
“It’s okay, sweetie, don’t be scared. No one’s going to hurt you.” Isabella held Jenarth tight, her heart aching. “I already texted Carter; he’s on his way. This is all my fault. I’m so useless, letting you get hurt.”
“Robert!”
Victoria’s urgent voice cut through the noise as she slammed on the brakes of the shared bike.
She had pedaled over as fast as she could, pushing the bike to its limit. Finally, she’d made it. From a distance, she’d seen the crowd and the ambulance at the school gate. Without a second thought, she rode straight into the kindergarten.
“Robert!” she called out again, abandoning the bike without properly parking it, and rushed into the crowd.
Robert heard his mother’s voice and immediately got to his feet.
“Mommy, I’m over here.”
Victoria pushed through the gathered parents, her eyes locked on Robert. She ignored everyone else, ran to him, and pulled him into a tight hug.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Her hands moved over his shoulders and arms, checking for any sign of injury. Only when she was sure he was physically fine did she let herself relax a little.
“Victoria! Look what your son did! He bullied my child!” Isabella’s shrill voice rang out. “Can we keep the kids out of adult matters? You’ve… you’ve really crossed a line today!”
Hearing Isabella, Victoria finally took in the whole scene. So many people had gathered in such a short time. She saw Jenarth crying in Isabella’s arms and the medical staff waiting quietly nearby.
Victoria turned back to Robert, her gaze steady and serious. “Robert, tell me exactly what happened.”
Robert looked toward Isabella and Jenarth, his voice calm. “Someone put pieces of cooked egg in Jenarth’s water cup. He accused me of doing it. He started a fight with me, and then he told everyone I hit him.”
Victoria’s face darkened instantly. She lifted her head, her eyes turning cold and sharp as she stared directly at Isabella.
“Ms. Lewis,” Tracy interjected, her tone grave. “Robert hit Jenarth – and he’s also accused of putting egg bits in Jenarth’s water cup. It sent Jenarth into shock, and he nearly had a life-threatening incident. We really need to get Jenarth to the hospital now. Perhaps… it would be best if Robert apologized to Jenarth first?”
“Apologize?” Victoria’s voice was cold. “Mrs. Campbell, demanding an apology before we know what actually happened seems unfair. Are you saying your position lets you decide who’s right and who’s wrong, just like that?”
Tracy’s expression tightened.
“Ms. Lewis, that’s not what I meant at all,” she replied defensively, then quickly turned to a nearby teacher. “Go to the security room. Pull the footage from the classroom. We’ll see what really happened.”
Isabella looked at Victoria, tears streaking her ruined makeup.
“Victoria, I know you can’t stand me. Fine. But you can’t let your son take it out on my boy! Jenarth is severely allergic to eggs. If the ambulance had been any later today… I don’t even want to think about what could have happened.”
“Don’t cry, Mommy! It makes me sad.” Jenarth’s small hand shakily wiped at Isabella’s cheeks.
“It’s okay, sweetie.” Isabella clutched his hand, then lifted her tear-filled eyes to Victoria. “I’m not asking for the world. I just want my son to be safe.”
“Isabella! Jenarth!”
A man’s loud voice cut through the tension. Carter, dressed in a sharp suit, rushed to the scene.
Victoria raised an eyebrow at Carter’s flustered state. Did he run straight from a board meeting?
Carter glanced over the scene and immediately spotted Isabella, slumping on the ground, along with Jenarth in her arms.
“Jenarth, are you okay?” He hurried over, grabbing the boy’s hand and holding it tightly. “Don’t be scared. I’m here now.”
“Look, Mommy! Daddy Carter came!” Jenarth managed a small smile.
Isabella hugged her son closer, her eyes glistening as she looked at Carter. “Carter, all Jenarth wanted was to be friends with Robert. He just wanted to play with him. But Robert… he didn’t want to. He even…”
Her voice broke, and she let the sentence hang, the unspoken accusation clear.
“How could he?” Carter’s anger ignited. He turned and saw Robert standing calmly in Victoria’s arms, looking unfazed by the chaos around them.
This kid, acting so cool after causing all this trouble?Did he do it on purpose? Was Victoria behind this?
On his way over, Carter had gotten the story – Jenarth had an allergic reaction. The school knew about his egg allergy. But someone put egg bits in his water cup. And when Jenarth tried to talk to Robert about it, Robert hit him.
The thought of his own son acting so maliciously made his blood boil.
“Victoria, is this what you’ve taught him? Ever since you left the Myers family, you’ve become so bitter. Are you now teaching my son to be cruel?” Carter glared at her, his voice trembling with fury.
“Carter, you never change, do you? Always jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts. You’ve always been blind to the truth.” Victoria let out a sharp, cold laugh.
“Victoria!” Carter roared, his voice echoing through the kindergarten. The children, who had just been calmed down, flinched and hid behind their parents, on the verge of tears again.
“Carter, just leave it. This is my fault. I never should have sent Jenarth here. I never should have gotten involved with… her.” Isabella’s voice was thick with hurt. She gently pulled at Carter’s sleeve. “Let’s just go. We need to get Jenarth to the hospital. We’ve already been humiliated enough. What’s one more thing?”
“No.” Carter’s refusal was sharp. He glared at Victoria and Robert. “If Robert did this, he needs to face the consequences. He’s young, but this is vicious. If I don’t deal with this now, I’m failing him and the Myers name.”
He turned his stern gaze to Tracy. “Mrs. Campbell, what is this school’s policy for a situation like this?”
Tracy lowered her voice, sounding nervous.
“Mr. Myers, this… never happened before. But per our code of conduct, if a student causes serious harm, they could get expelled.”
“Expel him! He has to go! Who knows which of our children he’ll target next!”
“Absolutely, expel him! We won’t feel safe otherwise.”
“A kid like that – causing this much chaos at his age?! He belongs in a special school, not here messing up Eaton’s reputation!”
The other parents chimed in, their voices rising in a chorus, all demanding the same thing – Robert had to be expelled.
Tracy looked at Victoria, completely at a loss. “Ms. Lewis, you see how it is… The situation has gotten out of hand.”
“Here is the footage,” a teacher said, bringing over the surveillance recording and playing it for everyone.
Victoria stepped forward, her eyes locking onto the screen.
In the video, Robert was the first to appear. He picked up a water cup, fiddled with it for a moment, and then put it back. Soon after, Jenarth came into view, grabbed the same cup, and took a swig.
Almost immediately after drinking, Jenarth began to show signs of distress. He clutched at his throat, his face contorting in pain, then turned and hurried over to Robert. The two boys exchanged words, and a brief scuffle broke out.
The camera angle was partially obstructed by classroom furniture, making the details fuzzy, but one thing was clear – after Robert turned around, Jenarth suddenly stumbled backward.
His small body wobbled and then hit the floor.
“Did you all see that? Someone pushed my Jenarth!” Isabella cried out, her voice sharp with accusation. “And there was something wrong with that water! Someone must have put egg bits in the cup! That’s what caused Jenarth’s allergic reaction!”
With Isabella’s words ringing in the air, all eyes turned to Victoria.
The video seemed to tell a clear story: Robert had handled the cup. Jenarth drank from it and had a reaction. A panicked Jenarth went to Robert for help, only to be shoved away. The push looked forceful, especially for a child so young, and utterly careless.
“Mrs. Campbell, the proof is right there. What more is there to discuss? Just expel him! A child with such a mean streak doesn’t belong at Eaton Kindergarten,” one parent insisted.
Carter looked at Victoria, his face a mask of disappointment.
