After the two reached an agreement, Xavier left with Luke. Quincey Manor was a huge compound with separate smaller houses so each could have their privacy.
Once they left, Julian asked, “Dad, are you really going to team up with Uncle Xavier?
He’s not a good person.”
“Who in this family is a good person?” Yakov countered.
Pouting, Julian grumbled, “Well, I think you shouldn’t team up with him. If you have to team up with someone, Eustace is the better choice.”
“Julian, I’ve been meaning to ask you this. Why do you think Eustace is better than your uncle? Do you think he’s a better person?” Yakov didn’t know where his son got the idea from.
Julian was stunned. After careful consideration, he realized that he was influenced by what Danika had told him. Since then, he had been helping Eustace. The realization terrified him. Why did she have such a big influence on him? Why was he listening to her?
Nonetheless, Yakov wasn’t upset over it. Instead, he said, “Neither your uncle nor Eustace is a good person. If either of them takes over the Quincey family, it will be a devastating blow to us. Therefore, we need to take over the family ourselves and take our destiny into our own hands.”
He would never hand his fate over to anyone else.
“I know, but I don’t think we have much chance of winning,” Julian said, lowering his head. Although it was discouraging, it was a fact. In terms of power within the Quincey family, they were no match for Xavier. In terms of ability, they were also inferior to
Eustace. Hence, Julian found it difficult to believe they could ultimately emerge victorious.
Seeing him like that, Yakov sighed and said, “When two people quarrel, the third rejoices. Have you never heard of that?”
Taken aback, Julian quickly understood what his father meant. Turning to him, he said, “I understand.”
I’m Just Afraid I’ll Disappoint You
The banquet was held half a month after Graham’s discharge from the hospital. By then, his body had mostly recovered, but he was far from his former self.
In the lounge of the banquet hall, Danika donned a light blue, high-end custom-made dress and left her long wavy hair styled loosely in a relaxed do. Although she was stunningly beautiful, her expression didn’t carry much joy. She knew the purpose of the banquet.
“Dad, you’re still young and capable of running the company. There’s no need to pass it on to me now.” She couldn’t manage the company, and even if it was entrusted to her, it would only be managed by other employees and professionals, which was meaningless.
Graham sat down beside her. He wasn’t angry when he heard her say that.” I’m getting old. After this incident, I suddenly realized something…! used to think there was still a lot of time, and I wanted to wait until later to look for your mother. Now, I understand that accidents are always around the corner. So I don’t want to wait any longer.”
Now that he and Rowena were divorced, he wanted nothing but to find Danika’s mother. It had always been on his mind, and Danika knew it.
“I’m just afraid I’ll disappoint you,” Danika said, feeling a great deal of pressure inheriting Zellweger Inc as it was a huge company. Although she technically didn’t have to manage it, could she ignore it completely after taking over? Could she still have the freedom she has now? The answer was no.
Graham stroked her head dotingly. “Don’t worry, I have chosen some very capable people for you. With them around, Zellweger Inc won’t have any problems. Even if the company goes bankrupt, the funds I have saved for you over the years are enough for you to spend for a lifetime.”
He didn’t have much property under his name because he transferred all of it to
Danika’s name. Hence, Danika was among the wealthiest of her peers in Bardoff City.
“Okay.” Danika nodded. She understood that there was no turning back at that point.
Noticing that she still seemed unhappy, Graham continued, ‘Evan has been working at
Zellweger Inc for half a month now. He is a skilled worker, so you should be more at ease with him around.’
Graham had given one of the departments of Zellweger Inc to Evan, partly to test his abilities and partly to let him gain some experience. If he could win Danika’s heart and gain the approval of everyone in Zellweger Inc, he could even become the general manager in the future.
“Evan…” Thinking of Evan, Danika felt even more annoyed.
Graham patted her head and said, “Don’t think too much about it for now. Let nature take its course. Besides, I’m not rushing you.”
“Okay.”
Soon, the banquet hall was bustling with people, and almost the entire upper-class society of Bardoff City had come to attend. Most people could guess the purpose of
Graham’s banquet today, but they were all curious about why he suddenly made that decision. Was his health failing? Many people had come to find out.
After all, if Graham was really in trouble, it was inevitable that people would start having plans and ideas. Danika had just taken over Zellweger Inc. How capable could she be?
Soon, Eustace and Blake arrived at the venue. Eustace carried a stoic expression that seemed to say, “Strangers are not allowed to interact with me.” Blake, on the other hand, stood next to him with a smile on her face.
“Eustace, cheer up. If you keep this up, people will think we have a big grudge against the
Zellwegers,” Blake said with a smile, pulling at his sleeve.
Have a Great Time Tonight
Although Eustace appeared expressionless, he was quite annoyed. His gaze shifted to Luke and Julian standing not far away. He knew what was going on between them since their previous dinner conversation. Although he knew it was impossible for Danika to be interested in those two, he couldn’t be sure if he understood Danika anymore.
“Eustace?” Blake saw that he was lost in thought while staring at Luke and Julian and asked worriedly, “What’s wrong? Is there something going on with them?”
“Nothing,” Eustace shook his head, not intending to say anything to her. Blake’s face fell. Since Eustace’s memory recovered, he had not been as transparent with her as before. It was clear that he had his guard up against her. That was not good news, and she needed to find a way to overcome it.
At the banquet, with people crowding around, Stephanie found a quiet corner to sit in and enjoy her champagne. She was not qualified to attend this kind of banquet, nor did she want to. However, since Danika was the star of the event, she had to come for her best friend. However, she felt like she was being watched from the moment she entered the banquet hall. Although she couldn’t see who it was when she looked around, she remained vigilant and decided to greet Danika and leave soon after. She’d celebrate with her privately another day.
Soon, the lights in the venue dimmed, and the spotlight was turned on.
Graham appeared with Danika on stage. Without beating around the bush, he announced that Danika would be taking over the Zellwegers and Zellweger Inc while he would be stepping down from the front line and would no longer be managing the affairs of the group.
When Danika took the microphone, she smiled at the crowd. “Thank you all for attending the event today. As my father just said, starting today, I will be taking over Zellweger Inc. However, as you all know, I don’t have much experience in this field, so I hope everyone can help me in the future.”
It was a very humble statement, and everyone in the audience hurriedly complimented her.
“However, it’s not advisable that you try to take advantage of the situation to cause trouble for Zellweger Inc just because I lack experience. After all, I’m not a pushover, and Zellweger Inc is not to be trifled with.”
She turned to the people below the stage, making them nervous. Her sharp gaze made them tense, as if she could see through their little schemes with just one look.
They all laughed nervously.
Danika was pleased by their reaction. She had made it clear that she was not easily bullied. “Well then, have a great time tonight, everyone.”
As she finished speaking and was about to leave, Graham stopped her and took the microphone. He smiled and said, “Besides my daughter today, there is another person I would like to introduce to you all.”
Then, Evan was called up on stage.
After praising him, Graham talked about his employment in Zellweger Inc. He was implying that he was the successor, which confused everyone.
However, they quickly understood the situation when they saw how Evan looked at Danika. Graham was trying to matchmake the two.
It was a logical decision as Danika had no interest in managing the company. If it were left to his son-in- law, Graham would be very relieved. Once they understood that, they started looking at Evan in a different light. After all, he would take over the Zellwegers in the future, so they held him in high regard.
Meanwhile, Danika was speechless. Graham hadn’t told her about it beforehand, so she had no idea how to deal with the situation.
Please Get to the Point
Once the three of them exited the stage, Danika muttered, “Dad, why didn’t you stick to the plan?”
“From now on, Evan will help you manage Zellweger Inc. Why not let everyone know about your relationship?” Graham laughed as if he couldn’t see the resentment in Danika’s eyes.
Danika rolled her eyes, thinking to herself, “Are you serious?”
Feigning ignorance, Graham made an excuse and left, leaving the two of them alone.
Evan smiled at Danika and said, “Don’t be angry with Mr. Quincey. He only wants what’s best for you and hopes you have more people to rely on.’ 1
“In this day and age, it’s every man for himself, and the devil takes the hindmost. Can we truly rely on others?” Danika had never considered such a thing.
Evan, however, couldn’t help but laugh at her. He even playfully flicked her forehead.
“You’re still so stubborn after all these years. Can’t you give in a little?”
If Danika yielded a little, he would be willing to give her anything, even his life. Standing so close together, anyone who saw them would have misunderstood their relationship.
Eustace happened to be nearby. His expression wasn’t good, to begin with. Upon seeing them, his face fell.
When Danika spotted him, she trembled. However, she quickly composed herself and asked, “Mr. Quincey, is there anything we can help you with?”
“I need to talk to you,” he said, emphasizing, “Alone.”
Danika was about to refuse, but Evan spoke first, “Why do you need to talk to Danika alone? Why don’t you tell me first? If it’s about Zellweger Inc, you don’t need to look for Danika. She’s not in charge of business matters.”
Evan knew what Eustace was up to and refused to allow him to get what he wanted.
“Why must you be involved in my conversation with Danika?” Eustace merely glanced at him.
“Evan, why don’t you go and do something else? Didn’t Dad want to introduce some people to you? Go meet them,” Danika suggested, not wanting to see them argue.
Evan frowned, but he didn’t object. “Alright, take care. Let me know if anything Happens.”
“Sure, don’t worry.” Danika gave him a reassuring look, telling him not to overthink. After Evan left, Danika looked at Eustace, and her smile disappeared instantly.” Mr. Quincey, please get to the point.”
Sorry
Evan, who was standing nearby, had been observing everything. His face was shrouded with gloom, and his eyes flashed with a murderous gleam, but he quickly composed himself because he was beside Graham.
Blake also noticed Eustace and Danika as she never let Eustace out of her sight. When she saw him leave with Danika, she was tempted to rush over and scream that Danika was a homewrecker. But she held herself back. She was at the Zellwegers’ event, representing the Watkins. It would not be good for either of them if she did that.
Eustace locked the door behind him after they entered the lounge.
Danika frowned and eyed him suspiciously. “What are you doing?”
“I’m just worried that someone might come in suddenly. Did you think I would harm you?” Eustace asked with a wry smile. Was he such a terrible person in Danika’s eyes?
