Danika didn’t think he would harm her; she just found his behavior puzzling.” Can we talk about it now?” she asked.
Eustace nodded and walked over to sit down. He motioned for her to sit as he needed to have a serious talk with her. Danika frowned again but still sat opposite him and waited for him to speak. ‘My memory has fully recovered, ” he finally announced after a long silence.
Their eyes met, and Danika didn’t understand why he said that. She was the one who performed the surgery. How could she not know?
“Danika, I’m sorry.” Looking at her, Eustace’s face carried many emotions. Above all of them was love— restrained love.
Danika’s mood plummeted. She had no idea why her mood had abruptly dropped.
“Do you know what I was thinking when I jumped off the cliff on the day of the accident?’ Eustace said, staring at her. ‘I wasn’t afraid of death at the time. The first thought that came to my mind was that if I died, I would never see you again. You said that once the Glasses’ affairs were resolved, you would agree to be with me. But I lost my memory when it finally happened. I was so close to having you back. On the day my memory was restored, I only felt pain, so much pain. But it wasn’t the pain from the surgery. It was a pain in my heart.” Eustace’s eyes turned red. He had wanted to say these words to Danika for a long time, but he never had the chance.
When he saw Danika and Evan standing together, the two of them being so intimate, and Graham decided to take Evan as his successor that day, he knew that if he delayed it any longer, he would stand no chance.
Danika remained silent. She lowered her head so Eustace couldn’t see the tears in her eyes. Finally, she composed herself and faced him with a small smile.
“Why are you telling me all this? It’s all in the past, isn’t it? You swore before that your liking for me was due to psychological problems, and even if your memory returned, you wouldn’t like me.”
Eustace was silent as he remembered uttering those words. However, he had lost his memory back then and had no idea how deeply he loved Danika, which was why he had spoken so carelessly and brazenly.
“Danika, I hadn’t regained my memory at that time-“
“Just because you lost your memory doesn’t mean you should forget that you liked me.”
Danika believed that if a person genuinely loved someone, losing their memory wouldn’t make them forget about their loved one. If they saw them again, they would be able to fall in love with them all over again, or at least Danika would. As for Eustace. It just meant he didn’t love her enough.
Give It Some Thought
Eustace didn’t argue against that. He nodded and said, “Yes, even if I lose my memory, I will fall in love with you again.”
Danika opened her mouth, but no words came out of it.
“Isn’t it true? Haven’t you noticed that even though I lost my memory, I still paid more attention to you than others? I still cared about the other men around you and felt unhappy about them.” Eustace sighed. Even he had to admit that he was bound to Danika by fate.
Danika felt a pang in her heart. Perhaps she believed him, or perhaps she felt that Eustace was making excuses. Looking at him, she said, “There’s no point in saying all these now. After all, you have a girlfriend.’
“Blake and I are just in a business relationship.’ Eustace knew she misunderstood, so he quickly explained.
“A business relationship?” Danika sneered at the thought. She was not a young child who was easily deceived.
Sighing, Eustace told Danika everything—from the moment he was awakened by Blake to their collaboration and the development of their relationship.
Danika, however, seemed mildly surprised. “So, you got in a relationship with Blake just to take over the Quincey family?”
“Yes.” That was Eustace’s truth.
Danika laughed, asking, “Is that the only way you can win the Quinceys over? Is faking a relationship with Blake the only method you could employ? If that’s the case, you are not the Eustace I know.’
Eustace had always been confident in his abilities. Did he need to work with Blake in such a way? So what if Blake was the daughter of the Watkins? Did she have any say in the family? Perhaps the only reason she had some say now was that she was together with Eustace. After all, the Watkins also wanted to support a Quincey successor.
Unfortunately, Eustace didn’t understand that.
“Eustace, it’s not wrong for you to work with the Watkins,” Danika said.” However, you must choose the right way. Did you really need to work with Blake like that? I don’t think so. If you offered them enough benefits and incentives, the Watkins would have cooperated with you even without Blake in the equation.”
In an instant, Eustace figured everything out. He knew it all along, but perhaps he had lost some confidence in himself, or perhaps because Danika suddenly became the daughter of the Zellwegers, he became a bit impatient and resorted to those means.
Danika made him understand that his choice to work with Blake was wrong.
When he was silent, Danika stood up and said, “Give it some thought.”
She got ready to leave. After all, she was the main character of the event, so she couldn’t waste time here with Eustace. However, before she could leave, he grabbed her wrist.
Standing up to face Danika, he asked, “Danika, can you give me another chance after Blake and I break up?”
Who Knows?
Danika did not return to the event immediately after leaving the lounge. Instead, she went to the restroom to touch up her makeup. After confirming that she looked fine, she was about to return to the venue.
“What is going on between Evan and the Zellwegers? From the looks of things, they’re grooming him to be their successor.”
Before Danika could leave the restroom, she heard the discussion outside the door.
Not wanting to be discovered, she quickly hid in a nearby storeroom.
“Who knows? Maybe he has an extraordinary background.”
“An extraordinary background? Well, I think Mr. Zellweger wants to find a son- in-law, and Evan is the person he chose.”
After that was said, everyone was shocked, but after thinking about it, they felt it made sense. How else could they explain Graham’s actions?
“Danika is now in control of the Zellwegers by herself. Graham must be worried, so he found himself a capable son-in-law, killing two birds with one stone.”
Everyone nodded and agreed, “But I heard that Danika and Eustace from the Quincey family were formerly married. That makes things rather complicated.”
“Yes, but let’s not underestimate Eustace. He is now with the Watkins’ daughter. With their support, he might be able to take over the Quincey family. II
Everyone laughed, taking it as a joke. No one thought Zeke would hand over the family to an outsider like Eustace.
Listening to their discussions, especially when they mentioned that Evan would become the son-in-law of the Zellwegers, Danika felt particularly uneasy. Evan was very capable. Even if he didn’t join the Zellwegers, he could still make a name for himself.
Danika didn’t want to affect him.
Soon, they left the restroom, and Danika followed suit, returning to the venue.
However, she felt a bit down because of what she had just overheard.
“What’s wrong?” Evan appeared beside her. He was a bit worried seeing Danika not in a good mood.
She shook her head, intending to discuss him joining Zellweger Inc. However, she spotted Brandon nearby. If it was only him, Danika couldn’t care less. However, the person next to Brandon caught her eye. It was Yvonne.
Just as she was about to forget about her, she appeared before her again.
“Miss Zellweger.” Brandon walked up to Danika. “No, I should call you President Zellweger now, right?”
“Don’t be so polite, Mr. Britt. I’m just the president by name.” Danika smiled in response, not saying much.
Regarding Brandon, she really wanted him to marry Jolene. After all, the two of them weren’t exactly the best people, making them perfect for each other. However, everything had changed.
“Hello, Miss Dickman.” Danika glanced at Yvonne and sneered, “Miss Dickman, let’s not pretend to be strangers. We were quite familiar with each other before.” Brandon was stunned to hear that. Frowning, he asked, “Do you two know each other?”
“Of course,” Danika answered. Her tone was unpleasant. While she did not elaborate, it was clear that she knew Yvonne and didn’t like her very much.
Brandon could also sense that; although he was curious, he didn’t ask about it.
“Congratulations, Miss Zellweger, on inheriting the Zellweger family.” He had come mainly to congratulate Danika. There had been some unpleasant encounters before, but he considered them minor issues. Hence, there could be opportunities for future cooperation between them.
What Do You Want to Talk About?
Danika reluctantly replied to Brandon with a smile. Although she disliked him, she wouldn’t disrespect him on such an occasion. After a few exchanges, he left.
Soon after, Yvonne came to talk to Danika. “Let’s talk, Danika,” she said calmly. Danika, mildly intrigued about what she had to say, let out a light chuckle as she asked,
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Let’s forget about the past and focus on our new lives. I won’t come to trouble you in the future, and I hope you won’t make things difficult for me either,” Yvonne said.
From how Brandon treated Danika, she was worried that if Brandon knew about her grievances with Danika, he might change his mind about her.
Yvonne was with Brandon now, not to become his woman but to pursue greater things. If Danika caused her any problems, her plans would be ruined.
Danika was amused. Wondering where Yvonne got the confidence to say such things, she asked, “You? Trouble me? Yvonne, do you think you are in the position to say that?”
She had just inherited the Zellweger family. Even if she hadn’t, had Yvonne ever prevailed against her? Someone who had never won against her had no right to threaten her.
Yvonne’s face fell, and she gritted her teeth. “I know you’re powerful now, but even the strongest people are afraid of being targeted by others, right? I’ll tell you straight up.”
Yvonne continued to threaten. “I finally got together with Brandon, and if you mess it up for me, even if I die, I’ll make you pay.”
Danika wasn’t afraid when she heard her harsh words. Instead, they made her furious.
As Yvonne tried to stare her down, she walked up to Yvonne and slapped her. “Do you want to know where we are? This is my family’s territory. How dare you threaten me here? Let me tell you, even if I kill you today, no one will take your side, including Brandon!”
Danika knew what kind of person Brandon was. Although he liked women, he wouldn’t lose his mind over one.
Yvonne covered her face. She was fuming inside, but she knew what Danika said was true. She was nothing but an insignificant ant in front of her. No matter how much she hated the fact, she couldn’t change it.
“Do you feel better now? Let’s consider whatever happened in the past even with this slap. What do you think?” Although Yvonne was angry, she couldn’t lash out at Danika.
All she could do was try to convince Danika to stop.
Unfortunately, Danika refused to comply. Rubbing her slightly sore palm, she said,
“This slap is for Alicia. Jonathan ended up where he did mainly because of you, yet you don’t feel any guilt. On top of that, you also dragged Alicia into it. Don’t you know that Jonathan paid you his life so you would pay for his sister’s medical treatment?
Did you ever consider the consequences of bringing her into this? Will you only be satisfied when they are both dead?”
Danika had an inkling that Alicia had come looking for her for a reason. There had to be someone who told her something. Although she had guessed it was Yvonne at the time, she hadn’t seen her and didn’t know she had come to Bardoff City. Now that
Yvonne was in front of her, she could almost confirm that Alicia showed up because of the woman.
