“I regretted it,” he croaked with tears in his eyes.

Unlike her, he could not afford to display his emotions openly. In the two decades, he had kept his feelings under strict control to the point that he was clueless about how to express himself.

“What did you just say?” she questioned, her eyes wide open in bewilderment.

“Alyssa, I regretted the divorce. I regretted letting you go. Would you give our relationship a second

Would you give our relationship a second chance?

From where? He wanted a second chance when he had no idea what happened in the 13 years. He was even oblivious to her miscarriage. The audacity to ask for a second chance!

Her eyes clouded over. There wasn’t a hint of joy. Jeremy picked that up. His enthusiasm turned cold, and his heart squeezed.

“Things have ended between us. Do you understand? There’s nothing more between us beyond this point,”

she declared cold-bloodedly with tears in her eyes.

She added, “We didn’t even start on the right foot. The journey from our marriage to divorce was filled with mistakes.”

“My dad once told me that a perfect relationship has to be smooth from the start. In our three years of marriage, I gave up myself to prop you up. I kept the relationship by compromising. What’s the point of keeping this broken relationship? Why would I hurt myself by giving you a second chance?”

Alyssa’s words were piercing and damning. Jeremy refused to lose her and reached out to hold her hand, but she dodged the move.

He panted heavily and declared, “I swear I will not treat you like I did in the past. You don’t even have to do anything. I’ll pursue you.”

Her heart raced as she went through a whirlwind of emotions. Her palms grew sweaty, her breathing became erratic, and her heart raced in all directions.

She scoffed at his suggestion. “You once said I was a shameless and deceitful woman. I’m not a prim and proper lady, unlike Liana Gardner. Why would you fall for me?”

She sniffled and added, “Besides, I’m no longer the gullible and weak Allison Burton. Men are lining up for

1. Do you think you stand any chance after being blacklisted as a massive jerk?”

“Alyssa, I really-“

“Stop it. I don’t want to hear one more word,” she interrupted, covering her ears and leaving the room hastily. “I’ll consider your words today as nonsense. I’m treating your wounds only because I feel bad for you. We will part ways once you’ve recovered.”

With that, she slammed the door shut.

Jeremy’s eyes were bloodshot. His hands, suspended in mid-air, finally dropped.

He mumbled, “But I truly love you.”

After leaving Jeremy’s room, Alyssa met with Xavier instead of going home. She wanted to obtain more information about Jeremy’s condition. She also took the body checkup reports and patient files to review later at home.

She was concerned because she realized that Jeremy was in a bad condition after performing a body checkup on him just now. He might suffer from chronic side effects if his wounds were not taken care of.

Sean drove the Taylor siblings to Belbanks in their Rolls-Royce. Liam took the second passenger seat while Jonah sat in the back with his arm draped around Alyssa’s shoulder.

Throughout the journey, Alyssa tightly clutched Jeremy’s patient profiles and scan results. She rested her head on Jonah’s shoulder and repeatedly sighed, obviously in low spirits.

“What’s going on, Lyse? You seem upset,” Jonah inquired and gently caressed her cheek. “Is Jeremy dying?

She was speechless at his speculation. Liam turned around with a frown and said, “Oh, that would be good news. Why would you feel upset?”

Again, she was dumbfounded.

“Liam, Lyse is a thoughtful and kind soul. She’ll feel bad if something happens to Jeremy because he has saved her life,” Jonah remarked with a sigh.

Liam seethed but did not comment more.

“Jeremy is severely injured, but he’s no longer in critical condition because he received timely treatment.”

“That’s great news. Why are you upset, then?” Jonah sounded puzzled.

She replied, “It’s not a big deal.” After a pause, she admitted, “Jeremy said he wanted to pursue me.”

A heavy silence enveloped the car.

Jonah, Liam, and Sean were baffled. Sean, who was driving, almost lost his grip on the steering wheel.

“Lyse, w-what did you just say?” Jonah stammered, losing his usual composure.

“Jeremy told me he regretted the divorce. He wanted a second chance and even said he’d pursue me this time,” Alyssa recounted.

She raised her chin and fixed her crystal-clear eyes on Jonah. “Jonah, what does that mean? Is that a love confession?”

Liam and Sean retorted at the same time, “Nonsense!”

Then, they again scolded Jeremy in unison, “That shameless bastard!”

Jonah blinked, his brows furrowing.

“Jonah, can you believe it? The man who destroyed my marriage now swears that he’s going after me. He almost had me convinced,” Alyssa mused with a forced smile. 1

Her past self would have rejoiced. Now, she felt nothing but glum. It was like desiring a toy as a child but losing interest when finally getting a better one as an adult.

Besides, what was Jeremy’s reason to pursue her romantically? He did not even appreciate her efforts when she was good to him. But now, he wanted a second chance when she treated him like scum.

“His love is worth nothing when it arrives late. His confession is nothing but garbage!” Liam seethed.

“Yeah. What did we really expect from him?” Sean agreed under his breath as he clutched the steering wheel.

“Lyse, did you forget the pain from how he treated you when you gave your heart to him? He’s now feeling upset and indignant when you reveal yourself to be the well-loved Alyssa Taylor, in all your glory.

“He probably wants you back just because he finally realized he was a fool. All he wants is to have you by his side to stroke his ego. As a man, I understand his psychology all too well!” Liam accused Jeremy with a sullen face.

“I don’t think this has anything to do with his ego,” intervened Alyssa. “But you got one thing right. He’s likely interested in me because he finds me more charming now. His attitude only changed after l revealed my true identity.”

“Men can be quite shallow, seeking novelty,” Sean hissed. “He’s fallen for the new you after growing tired of the ‘ladylike’ Liana. It’s just a change in taste for him. He went from liking poop to liking durian. He may be chasing you today, but who’s to say he won’t pursue someone else tomorrow.”

Liam agreed with him, “Absolutely! Do not give a cheating man a second chance!”

Alyssa merely raised a brow in scrutiny. “I know you’re comparing Liana to poop, but please explain who you’re drawing parallels to… the durian.”

Sean coughed awkwardly and explained, “I-It was just an analogy. I didn’t give it much thought.”

“What’s wrong with the durian? It’s called the ‘King of Fruits,’ and it does match your personality,” Jonah interjected with a smile.

“But the durian is thorny and smelly!”

“The durian is also soft inside and sweet in taste,” Jonah disagreed. He playfully touched the tip of

Alyssa’s nose “Doesn’t that sound just like you?”

She looked away, adorably feigning anger and letting out a snort.

“Anyway, Lyse, you really shouldn’t fall into Jeremy’s trap again. Men are all scumbags!” Liam advised

Alyssa, worried that his sibling might reignite her relationship with Jeremy.

“Except for me, Liam,” Sean timidly stood up for himself.

“Me too,” Jonah chimed in.

“Right, right. The guys in our family are pretty decent,” Liam hurriedly added.

“Well, not all. There’s this one old man who tarnishes the reputation of Taylor men,” joked Alyssa. She crossed her legs.

The three men exchanged knowing glances. Winston Taylor immediately came to their minds.

“I don’t give a damn!” Mandy scowled when she was being asked to help Jeremy. She had always yielded to Alyssa’s wishes, but this time, she staunchly refused Alyssa’s request for the medications.

“Mandy, listen to me…” Alyssa pleaded in desperation.

“There’s nothing more to talk about.” Mandy waved at her and reminded her coldly, “I’m well aware of how he mistreated you in the past. Lyla and Colette would have remembered it, too. Isn’t he the president of the Walsh Group? Let him figure it out himself with the power he has!”
