Xavier felt nervous every time he had to face Alyssa, who had grown assertive and abrasive. She had become the complete opposite of her past acquiescent self.
“He’s overthinking, then. I am not going to worry about him,” replied Alyssa with a snicker and a lift of the brow.
“But you wouldn’t have quickly located him if you weren’t worried about him, right?” Xavier bit the bullet and retorted.
“You-” She glared at him.
Jeremy secretly grinned as he rested against the headboard.
Xavier might be a little slow and clumsy and didn’t always do his job right. However, he had redeemed himself and pleased Jeremy with his words just now.
Jeremy secretly decided to increase Xavier’s bonus pay.
“Leave, all of you,” Alyssa instructed coldly.
Sean mumbled with a troubled expression, “But Ms. Alyssa-“
She promptly cut him off, “You too, Sean.”
Nobody dared defy Alyssa’s orders. Landon, Xavier, and Sean shuffled out of the room with their heads hung low.
When the door closed, Alyssa marched up to Jeremy. Her face was a mix of anger and concern.
She began, “looked at your patient records. You’ve got a serious concussion. If you’d waited just one more minute for treatment, you could have risked a hemorrhage and your life.”
“But I got help on time. And I’m still alive,” he replied calmly with a hint of nasal voice.
Jeremy then cast a tender and heavy look at her. “Don’t forget, I’ve served in wars. I endured all sorts of suffering and injuries. This is nothing.”
His intense gaze burned into her, triggering memories of their time together on the Luminara battlefields.
Despite her composed demeanor, those memories tugged at her heartstrings. Her palms grew sweaty, and her breaths became ragged.
“I’m thankful to you for saving my life, but you don’t have to handle everything on your own. Just let me know if you’re hurt, and I’ll get you help. Why hide it from me?” She looked squarely at him and said shakily.
“Xavier just explained the reason,” Jeremy answered coolly. He seemed nonchalant about his injuries.
“You’re hurt on your back, aren’t you? Take off your clothes and turn around,” she instructed, her tone cold and authoritative, ignoring the meaning behind his words just now. “Hurry up! What’s with the dilly-
dallying? Scared I’d take advantage of you?”
He smiled bitterly at her. “Of course not. You would have taken advantage of me three years ago if you’d wanted.”
“Well, I had the intention, but you never gave me a chance. You avoided me like the plague…” She trailed off when she realized her words had come out wrong. An embarrassed blush crept onto her face.
Jeremy was taken aback by the slip of her tongue. A heavy sense of guilt washed over him. The awkward tension in the room grew palpable once more.
He silently unbuttoned his shirt and took it off, revealing his bare, muscular top with attention-catching scars all over.
That wasn’t the first time Alyssa had seen him half-naked, but she still found herself admiring his toned physique. Swallowing hard, she ordered with an icy tone, “Lie face down.”
Jeremy, who had always been prideful and rebellious, went along with Alyssa. He rolled over just as instructed.
Alyssa pressed her lips, surprised by his lack of protest. The huge area of bruises on his wide and muscular back now lay exposed before her eyes.
At that moment, her eyes wavered. Despite her best efforts to keep her emotions in check, she couldn’t help but feel extremely bad for him.
He mistook her silence for shock and attempted to roll over again, but she pinned him down and ordered,
“Stop moving around. I need to take a better look.”
“The doctor said the bruises would slowly go away as I heal,” he remarked in a low voice. It was strange how he seemed to be trying to console her when he was the one who was injured.
“Like I can’t tell,” she fired back, annoyed.
Her sharp retort caught him off guard, and he responded with a hint of amusement, “I didn’t know you were such a firecracker when you were still with me. I am amazed by that sharp tongue of yours and your guts.”
“Yeah, I faked my personality to win you over,” she admitted. Her fingertips gently traced the scars on his back as she examined his wounds, her tone as cold as ice.
“I thought you might catch feelings for me one day if I were attentive and caring enough. After seeing the heartless side of you, I opted out of that marriage. I don’t need to put on a front now.
“Thinking back, I was really an idiot. It wasn’t worth losing myself for someone who’d never love me back.”
He felt suffocated-a bitter taste spread in his mouth.
Back then, he was blind to her love. He grew up to be a sensitive and anxious person after being subjected to unfair treatment.
He wanted to cling on to his possessions. He might be willing to accept defeat, but he couldn’t stand seeing people leave him.
He wasn’t really infatuated with Liana. In reality, he had been with her to escape his inner demons.
“Alyssa…”
‘Done checking. Roll over now.” She patted him on the shoulder.
“But the doctor has looked at-“
“I trust no one except myself. Roll over,” Alyssa reiterated. She was in doctor mode with a stoic look in her eyes. Confused, he followed her instructions and rolled over.
Their eyes met. Her heart skipped a beat at the sight of his perfect eight-pack. He might be a jerk, but he was undeniably attractive.
She couldn’t help but wonder if she was a pervert in her last life.
She collected herself and gently pressed on various areas of his legs, arms, and abdomen.
His eyes sparkled. Some unknown emotions stirred in his chest. He had an urge to confirm something with her.
“You’re stronger than the average person thanks to your military background, and you didn’t sustain severe injuries.
“But don’t ignore the bruises on your back. Mandy’s family’s pharmaceutical company produces this really effective medicine.
“I’ll ask for it and have it sent to you,” Alyssa informed him in a matter-of-fact tone as she ran her fingers over his ribs.
Without warning, he grabbed her hand and pressed it against his chest. Her eyes widened, and her heart raced, “What are you doing?”
That was crazy! For a second, she couldn’t tell if he was taking advantage of her or the other way around.
“Don’t you need to check me here?” He stared deep into his eyes. His breathing became heavier.
“No! Let go!” She started a tugging war with him in a panic.
Jeremy was strong despite being injured, much to Alyssa’s surprise. With a glimmer in his eyes, he pulled her toward him. She fell into his arms, and their bodies pressed against each other.
Jeremy pinned her down by resting his left hand on the back of her waist. It was still hooked to the IV drip.
“Jasp-” Alyssa teared up from the anxiety. Her words were cut short by his sudden kiss.
His damp and warm lips brushed against her. Upon tasting her sweetness, he became a beast out of control, kissing her aggressively and taking her in.
Meanwhile, Alyssa was dizzy from the kiss and unknowingly moaned. She tightened her grip on his chest, leaving behind red marks.
She was going through a mix of emotions-shame, humiliation, grievance… Driven by those emotions, she gave him a bite on the lip. Surprisingly, he did not flinch and only hugged her tighter as she bit him.
deeper.
The metallic taste of blood spread in their mouths. He endured the pain she inflicted on him but did not let go until she was almost out of breath.
They panted heavily, foreheads dotted with sweat. His lips were bloodied from her attack just now.
“You can’t do anything you want to me just because you’ve saved my life! You said that yourself!” Alyssa growled, panting and blushing hard.
He gazed at her affectionately and ran his fingertip across the blood. He said, “You mentioned you’d make it up to me as long as it’s not an outrageous request.”
“Wasn’t that considered outrageous?” Alyssa spoke but was unaware of the tears streaming down her face. She raged at him, “When will you let me live? I thought we were divorced. You wanted me gone!
“When will you stop bullying me? You have no right to touch me now that I don’t have feelings for you anymore!”
