“Mandy-“

“Oh, right, doesn’t he have a couple of lovers around him? I don’t see them shedding tears for him, though,

Mandy’s tone remained hostile and unrelenting when discussing Jeremy.

“He is a jerk, but he’s saved my life this time,” explained Alyssa. She took Mandy’s hand and led the latter to the couch, looking like the parent figure instead.

Mandy frowned. “What do you mean?”

Alyssa recounted her ordeal of getting into danger while saving someone at Crater Mountain. She also detailed how Jeremy got hurt while rescuing her.

Mandy’s hand went cold as she heard about the harrowing experience. She scolded, “Lyse, if you were my daughter, I would have grounded you and given you a good beating! You’re quite the daredevil!”

“Only Jonah, Liam, and Sean knew about this. Winston is still in the dark.” Alyssa placed a finger between her lips and whispered, “Please keep this a secret from him. I’m scared his blood pressure might skyrocket if he finds out.”

“God, I’m tired of keeping secrets for you. We’ve gathered enough secrets to fill a dossier from your marriage to Jeremy Walsh,” Mandy grumbled, poking Alyssa lightly on the temple.

She added, “I should have told your dad about the mountain incident and have him discipline you!”

“He-he! Even if you did, he wouldn’t be able to do much. He would have disciplined me earlier if he could have,” Alyssa teased.

After some persuasion, Alyssa finally convinced Mandy to help.

“Tell me the truth, Lyse. Did you catch feelings for him again after that incident?” Mandy asked with concern.

“Not at all,” Alyssa replied firmly. “I’m not going to dig my own grave. I just want to pay him back for what he has done for me.” Her heart panicked for a moment, but she soon gathered herself.

“Good to hear. “Just know that if you ever consider getting back with him, you’re out of our lives. It’s your family or that jerk,” Mandy warned and cast a frosty glance at Alyssa.

Alyssa rubbed against the goosebumps on her arm. Her skin prickled at Mandy’s threat.

“Lyse! Mandy!” Colette’s voice interrupted as she knocked on the door and entered.

She exclaimed, “The dresses for Lyla’s birthday party have arrived, and I need your input! I mean, I’m a woman who got married in jeans-I know nothing about women’s fashion.”

“Alright! we’ll be right there!” Alyssa replied. Eager to avoid more questioning from Mandy, she grabbed

Mandy’s arm and headed to see Lyla’s dresses.

The three women hastily made their way to Lyla’s room, where endless opulent evening gowns were displayed on racks.

Each dress was a limited edition and the latest design from Bastian Fashion Week. It was truly dazzling!

On the floor, pairs of haute couture heels were laid out. Some of them were adorned with diamonds in an envy-inducing display of wealth.

Any other woman would have squealed in delight at the scene. The price of the diamonds on those heels alone could buy a house.

However, Lyla appeared lost as she sat on the couch in her simple lilac sweater.

“What’s wrong, Lyla? It’s your birthday soon, but you seem upset,” Alyssa asked with concern. She took a seat beside Lyla and wrapped an arm around the latter.

“Lyse, could you please ask your dad to cancel the party?” Lyla sighed. “I’ve been insisting for months that I wanted a small gathering at home. I’m not accustomed to dining out, and it feels exhausting and wasteful to host all the guests he invited. But he won’t listen. What should I do?”

“Woah, Lyla, is that a humblebrag? Colette poked fun at her.

“We would have thought you were a bitch if we didn’t know you better,” joked Mandy, who rested her hand on Colette’s waist,

Alyssa’s eyes flickered. She was a little uneasy by Lyla’s behavior. Ever since she was young, Lyla, who married Winston, had deliberately stayed out of her sight out of consideration for her feelings. Alyssa would only see her during mealtimes, busying herself in the kitchen.

Back then, Alyssa was too young to understand much, but she knew that Lyla had been Jennifer’s romantic rival. As a child, she threw tantrums at home and caused trouble for Lyla to take Jennifer’s side.

She had even used hurtful words to insult Lyla.

At that time, she perceived women like Lyla as homewreckers. How could they humiliate themselves by staying with him, even after knowing that he had been married and had flings with multiple women?

It wasn’t until she grew a little older that she learned the full story from Jonah and Silas. It was Lyla who had selflessly donated her bone marrow to Jennifer, who was battling a severe case of lupus.

The bone marrow transplant took place two decades ago when medical technology was less advanced.

Lyla had endured lasting side effects from the transplant, leading to occasional pain throughout her body.

Although Jennifer had passed, Alyssa felt grateful to Lyla for adding a year to Jennifer’s life. Thanks to

Lyla, she enjoyed one more year of childhood happiness with her mom.

Later, it was Lyla who had taken care of her like a mom when she miscarried.

As time passed, Alyssa did not harbor resentment for Lyla anymore. She was a human with feelings and couldn’t bring herself to hate a woman who was consistently nice to her for two decades.

There was no reason for Alyssa to dislike Lyla, especially when Jennifer herself didn’t blame Lyla for anything.

“Lyla, we’ll have the party just as Winston wants it,” Alyssa advised. She held onto Lyla’s arm like a daughter.

Alyssa continued, “This is not only his wish-it’s mine, too. I have never properly celebrated your birthday in the last 20 years. I feel a little regretful about it.”

“Don’t be silly, darling,” gasped Lyla with widened eyes. “I’m the one who refuses any huge celebrations. It has nothing to do with you!”

“If so, let us throw this party for you to complete my wish. Alright?”

“Lyla, don’t overthink it! Lyse has made her wishes clear,” Mandy and Colette also encouraged Lyla.

In the end, Lyla was ushered to choose her dress with everyone’s insistence.

“These dresses won’t do,” Alyssa critiqued the luxurious dresses, crossing her arms on her chest. “They look so gaudy! Winston’s taste is pretty bad, unlike mine.”

“Well, they are good enough,” Lyla hurriedly replied.

Alyssa wagged her finger as her eyes shone with pride.

“You should be wearing a tailored dress from a top designer for your dress. And it has to be the most unique design in this world. Lyla, have you heard of Sharon?”

“Sharon?” Mandy and Lyla were taken aback. Even Colette, the tomboy. She looked a little confused and had vaguely heard of Sharon’s fame.

“Yep. Would you like me to ask her to design your dress for the birthday party?” Alyssa beamed.

“Lyse, are you serious? Sharon? The world-renowned fashion designer?” Mandy stared at Alyssa in disbelief

“There’s only one Sharon in the world, as far as I know,” Alyssa quipped.

“Winston once thought of getting Sharon to design a dress for Lyla, but he gave up after failing to contact-

her. Lyse, do you really have a way to reach out to Sharon?”

Alyssa grinned. Winston would probably find it hard to believe that Sharon had been right under his nose all along-Sharon was none other than his little girl!

“Of course. Sharon and I go way back. She’ll help if I ask her to,” Alyssa reassured them with a glint in her eyes.

She gave Lyla a hug and added, “Lyla, I want you decked in Alexa’s jewelry and Sharon’s dress. You’ll be the talk of the town. I want everyone to witness the charm and beauty of a former top actress!”

“Lyse…” Tears welled up in Lyla’s eyes as she grappled with her emotions.

“Don’t worry. I’ll make you the envy of every woman alive on that day!”

Finally, Mandy handed Alyssa the two medications, one for internal injuries and the other for external wounds, both developed by Lovelace Pharmaceuticals.

The next day, Alyssa tasked Sean to deliver the drugs to Jeremy.

Weirdly, Jeremy had his pride in front of his romantic rival and refused to show his weak side. When he noticed that Sean arrived alone, his disappointment swelled as he had hoped to see Alyssa.

In an instant, his high spirits crumbled. “Where is she?”

He leaned his stocky body against the headboard. He looked pitiful, with a hint of loneliness etched between his brows.

None of it mattered when Alyssa wasn’t there for his pity party.
