“Of course, it’s returned to its rightful owner, isn’t it?” He looked at me and suddenly reached out to touch my face.
“Why are you crying?” He asked slowly, frowning. I blinked, only to find that my tears had already covered my face.
“I-I’m just, you know, a little excited. This is the only gift my mother ever gave me,” I stuttered, backing away sheepishly, lowering my head to tie the necklace around my neck. I caressed the round pearl, my heart was full of happiness. I looked at the prince who had been known for being arrogant, cruel and womanizing, and all I could feel was gratitude.
“Your Highness, thank you for your help. I will always remember your kindness,” I said to him, placing my right hand on my heart. In our tribe, this gesture represents sincerity.
A moment of silence passed. I took a deep breath and looked at his handsome, cold face. His dark eyes were glued to me under his bushy eyebrows, as if he were examining a puzzle.
“Since you’re thanking me, you should do something.”
Callum lifts my chin with his long fingers and slowly moves closer. His handsome face widened in front of my eyes, and I watched as his thick eyelashes touched mine. My face was completely reflected in his golden eyes. My heart started beating out of control again. It’s too close, it’s too close, my mind makes me want to get away from him, but I can’t move at all…
His chin brushed my cheek, his damp, hot breath came into my ear, and his deep voice whispered, “Be my Luna, and my future Queen.”
!!!
What’s he talking about?
My face went completely red, and shame and anger flooded into my brain. I looked into his cold face, wide-eyed and frightened, for signs of jest or malice. But there was nothing on his face that could be more serious.
“Your Highness?” He interrupted me as soon as I had the courage to refuse.
“Hear me out,” he said, narrowing his eyes, as if he thought it was funny that I was so emotional. His lips curled up slightly, and he said slowly, “You know I didn’t take you away from your pack for nothing. I spent countless gold, silver and jewels, and also gave your father protection from the royal family. And you are the reward I ask. I’ve been looking for you for a long time, and you’re the chosen woman, and whether you accept it or not, you can’t change it, so I’m asking you to be my Luna.”
“Your Highness, I don’t know what you mean.” My mind went blank the moment I heard Luna. I thought I was hallucinating.
“You heard me right, you’re the Luna I picked,” he said, as if he could read my mind.
“I don’t understand, Your Highness. I don’t have a wolf. I’ve even been an outlier in my pack. I can’t get their recognition.” My face turned pale. I didn’t expect the price of my promise to be so heavy, I tried to understand his thoughts.
The Royals have always had the right to choose their queen from any pack, and almost all of the young she-wolves in the pack were eager to win the prince’s favor, but not me.
When I was young, I trained myself to be accepted. Since
I can’t shift, I think I can catch up with them in human form. I can train my limbs to be flexible and tough. But it didn’t work. I was still being pushed out.
‘Is she really Alpha’s daughter? She looks so skinny…’
‘Yes, and how can a werewolf not shift? Is she human?’
‘So what if she runs fast? So what if she catches up with the wolves? She must be of low maternal blood.’
“What a hassle. I bet alphas from the other packs couldn’t believe we had this monster.”
Werewolves have no compassion for the weak. They didn’t dare to bully me because of Alpha’s authority, but Alpha wasn’t around all the time, so a constant stream of whispers came into my ears. Monsters, that’s their definition of me.
I was forced to pretend to own a suit of armour unafraid of any rumor in my youth.
Being his Luna and future queen meant I was once again open to eyes and opinions from all directions. The nightmare of my youth will be repeated. Besides, I’m not even sure he’s my mate.
“You don’t want to?” Callum’s tone is laced with displeasure. “So, that thank-you you said before was just a lie?” He says sarcastically, his fingers slowly tapping on his folded legs, the condescending manner made me bow my head in shame.
The air became heavy, the necklace on my neck made me uneasy, and the fingers clutching my dress became pale.
“You are not the only werewolf who can not shift into a wolf. I have seen some records in the library of the palace.”
Callum spoke suddenly, his tone firm and overbearing. “When I say you are my Luna, you must be. I have my reasons, and I will take care of the rest. But you needn’t worry. I don’t have a mate, and I’m not looking for a mate. Doing my Luna is more like doing a job. In front of the others, you are my wife, and in front of me I am your –“
He paused, my heart in my throat.
“Master.”
He thought about it and gave me this answer.
It was getting dark and the moon began to move towards the center of the sky.
It was a night popular with werewolves, with the wind blowing and the forest rattling. But tonight I’m standing on the lawn in front of a symbol Callum drew with a scepter.
“Werewolves who can’t shift are mostly weak bloodlines. You need the Moon goddess’s blessing.” Callum reaches out his black-gloved hand. I nervously put my hand on his palm. He led me, step by step, to the center of the symbol.
“Kneel.”
I knelt down reverently and, following Karal’s instructions, bit my finger with my teeth and dropped blood into the container he had taken out.
Under the moonlight, black hair covered his face, a dark red cloak as if coagulation of blood. He took spices, herbs, poppy juice, wax, and my blood and mixed them in a black container until they were thick, and then he spread them slowly on my body. I closed my eyes, felt the juice slide on my skin.
A strange numbness rose from my whole body, from my face, neck, bare arms, legs, all the way to the soles of my feet, and something in my blood rose slowly, like a tidal wave. It invaded my mind and body in waves.
“Dear Moon goddess, my wish will grow and I will be reborn in this circle of magic. Please wash my blood, give me a strong back, give me the speed of a stag, give me the claws of a brown bear, give me the venom of a king snake, give me the wit of a fox, give me the strength of a bull, give me the teeth of a shark… .. .”
As the juices began to flow from my body, I began to say the prayers that Callum had asked me to recite in earnest.
Outside the circle, an invisible gale rose from the ground. It swept across the grass and came straight at me. Callum thrust the scepter firmly into the ground, the wind lifted his cloak, and his upturned garment was like a flying flag. But in the center of the circle, I closed my eyes and kept singing and chanting.
“Please make me shift into a wolf, and I will never betray you; please make me shift into a wolf, and I will always be your faithful follower.”
My voice was muffled by the wind. The Violent Wind hit me from every pore, like a lot of needles stabbed me. It hurt so much that I had to curl up all over. At the same time, my heart was beating violently, and the blood flowing under my skin seemed to turn to ice. A chill rose from the bottom of my heart and spread to my limbs. I held my trembling body, still insisting on reciting. “Please make me shift into a wolf, and I will never betray you; please make me shift into a wolf, and I will always be your faithful follower.”
The organs in my body seemed to be being cut, and the bones seemed to be breaking in waves. The wind is all around me, the blade of the wind across my skin. I finally couldn’t help myself and a mouthful of blood spurted out of my mouth.
I couldn’t go on. The pain made me think I was going to die.
The wind had died down, and the full moon in the vast sky had turned into a waning moon. The darkness of the night covered the earth, and the forest was silent as if it were dead.
More blood came out of my mouth, and my hands and calves were cut by the wind blade. The juice on my body was drying out.
Before I could close my eyes, a strong hand lifted me from the ground, and in my daze I heard a long sigh.
I’m sorry to disappoint you, my prince, I thought.
……
After confirming that I could not shift into a wolf, my master, Callum, decided to let me fulfill my duties as his handmaid for the time being. Callum hasn’t given up on the idea of turning me into a wolf. He thinks the main reason for my failure is my weak body.
“A horse has to run 10,000 miles to be a great horse, and you’re no exception,” Callum told me the day my wounds healed. He thought his arrangement would be good for my physical training.
So Callum got me out of the carriage and I walked with them.
Lycans are good at sports. Their vigorous figures cut across fields and bushes and cast shadows on the Earth. Callum was at the front of the line, his back standing steadily in front of us, like a flag leading the way. I gritted my teeth and tried my best to keep up with them, holding my breath. Thanks to the training that I have insisted on since I was a child, I rely more on my own human-shaped body without shifting ability.
The procession in the moonlight runs across the earth like an arrow leaving its bow. The wind blew over Callum, who was riding on his horse. He did not look tired at all. My clothes were soaked with sweat. My breathing became heavy. The other laycans were still running with ease. I began to pray to myself: take a break, I am tired to death. Perhaps the moon goddess finally heard my prayers, and with a wave of Callum’s hand, the procession finally stopped running. Thanks to the Moon goddess, I looked up at the
Moon. The Moon had come to the middle position. It’s time for the team to eat and rest.
