Jeremy was like a powerful warlord, capable of putting an ominous pressure on everyone in the room.
Everyone quickly fell silent.
Xavier’s fearless expression quickly turned into a grateful, blushing one. He gazed fondly at Jeremy, suddenly becoming his original, meek self again.
“Who permitted your man to injure someone in our family? Is someone as lowly as him fit to insult us?” Cornelius barked, glaring at Jeremy. “And what do you mean by saying someone from our family harmed Ms. Alyssa and her horse?”
“That’s right, Mr. Walsh. Did you think that you are over the law and can do whatever you like just because you’re the president of Walsh Group?
“Watch what you say. I might just sue you for defamation!” Preston said as he pointed at Jeremy’s face.
Jeremy had a callous look on his face, and Preston had absolutely no respect for him at all.
However, Jeremy thought he was more like a barking dog putting up a fierce front.
Landon hugged Lauren close and stroked her shoulder gently. He rolled his eyes at Preston.
As someone from the Harper Group, he was criticizing someone else for being over the law? That was ridiculous!
“Jeremy, did you investigate thoroughly before saying these things?” Sophia, whom Rory brought back, witnessed this scene.
She chimed in smoothly and condemned Jeremy and those siding with him, “Walsh Group and Harper Group are family friends. You and Landon are also as close as brothers. How could you raise this sort of suspicion? This will hurt the peace between both families. Wouldn’t this make Landon feel uneasy, too?”
Landon couldn’t bear to hear the words from a cunning woman like Sophia.
He hurriedly clarified, “Mrs. Walsh, I am trying to be prudent here. If needed, I can also turn my back on my family. Don’t you try to sow discord between Jeremy and I!”
Sophia and the rest of the Harpers were speechless. Their faces turned glum.
“So, in your eyes, the value of life is way more precious than living in peace and one’s reputation. Is that right?” Jeremy sniggered. His words were as sharp as a knife.
“That’s not what I said …” Sophia coughed.
“It was all because of this man who did something to the horse that Lyse was riding. He caused Lyse to fall from the running horse, and it almost cost her her life.’
“Do you think that I shouldn’t have said those words? Are you thinking that I shouldn’t take this revenge?”
Jeremy’s gaze filled with deep hatred, and his eyes were red. His heart was wrenching in pain.
He spoke through clenched teeth, and his voice became increasingly shaky. “It doesn’t matter who did it. I will make him die a horrible death. Don’t think that I only care about honor and reputation. The only one I care about is …”
…
He turned his eyes slowly and eventually fixed them on Alyssa. He looked at her lovingly and continued, “… is only her.”
In an instant, Alyssa’s eyes welled up with tears. She stared at him in a daze.
At this moment, she felt as if even her heart had been drowned by the wave of emotions that just overcame her.
“Fuck! He’s freaking cool!” Landon exclaimed quietly. He was in awe and envious of Jeremy all at once.
“Well … Jeremy really loves Alyssa,” Lauren commented with a sigh of relief. She rested her head on Landon.
She was aware of Sophia’s hatred for Alyssa. She was still quite worried at first. But, with Jeremy around, she knew that Alyssa wouldn’t be bullied.
“I love you very much too, darling,” Landon said as he gave her a warm kiss on her cheek.
“I know. You tell me that every day. You sound like a broken record,” answered Lauren in her sweet voice with a hint of annoyance.
Landon’s eyes beamed with sincerity. In a deeply affectionate tone, he said, “Believe me, Lauren. I will be like Jeremy. Even if the sky falls, I will never leave you. I will always watch over you, by your side.”
Lauren didn’t reply. She simply lowered her eyes and covered her mouth with her hand.
Rather than being watched over like a flower in an arboretum, she wished that she could be of help to him. Even if there was nothing she could do as the dull person that she was, she did not want to create trouble for the one she loved most.
While some of them felt pleased, some others felt their heart sink.
Jeremy’s behavior was decisive and merciless. Everyone there knew the kind of person he was. None of them could stop him.
The hatred in Zoe made her blood rush to her eyes. She let out a little dry cough as she was about to blow her top.
Alyssa obtained all that she dreamt of having. As for her, even after exhausting all means, she had only pushed Jeremy farther away from her!
“Mr. Walsh, you’re insisting that Max was the one who did it. Do you have any evidence?” Cornelius questioned in a frigid tone.
Jeremy wasn’t in a rush to answer him. He smirked coldly.
Max rolled his eyes. He reckoned that Jeremy didn’t have any concrete proof. He figured that Jeremy was just questioning him either because of hearsay or news that someone else had said.
Thus, he clenched his teeth and sneered. “I didn’t do anything! I only went to the stables to check on Harper Group’s horses! I didn’t come into contact with the Taylor family’s horse!
“Mr. Walsh caught me for no good reason. He even allowed his men to treat me roughly! What are your real intentions toward the Harper Group? Or were you trying to use cheap means as such to avenge your personal vendetta?”
Anger rose from within Alyssa as she clenched her fingers tight!
She thought Max was being crafty with his words by twisting the truth. He was the one who had the intention to murder but was now attempting to push the blame onto Jeremy.
He was trying to stir things up to drive a wedge between Jeremy and the Harper Group. He was trying to give Cornelius the confidence to stand up for him!
“Jeremy, this greatly affects the reputation of both our families. You shouldn’t take this as a joke!”
Sophia made herself appear like the head of the family. She pretended to be concerned for him as if she were doing so for the benefit of all.
In a concerned voice, she said, “We know that you have always felt like you owe it to Ms. Alyssa because of your divorce. When you realize that she met with an accident, it’s inevitable that you want to take revenge on her behalf …”
…
“Revenge? Mrs. Walsh, what made you say so?”
Preston became more and more upset as he listened to her.
He furrowed his eyebrows and questioned, “When did anyone in the Harper family ever wrong Mr. Walsh? Why does he have to take his revenge on one of us? Are we pushovers, or are we his punching bag? Don’t you dare cross the line!”
Preston’s speech made the people on the Harper Group’s side feel outraged. They glared at Jeremy with vicious looks in their eyes.
“Oh, Mr. Preston, you’ve misunderstood. What sort of grudge could me with Landon.”
Sophia raised the corner of her lips into a grin. She looked at Alyssa with a frosty gaze.
“Alyssa is the one who has a grudge against you all. The entire
Solana City knows that Alyssa and Zoe do not get along. They are the ones who do not see eye to eye.
“When Alyssa met with the recent accident, and with Harper Group this close to winning the competition, I’m sure these made Alyssa unhappy. It is understandable that you, Jeremy, were wanting to avenge her.”
Everyone was startled!
It had been obvious to them that Alyssa and Zoe were at loggerheads. However, had she made such a move to shift the blame onto Harper Group, all in the name of revenge?
Winston’s expression was cold as ice. He pressed his pale lips into a straight line.
He pondered over how despicable and shameless Sophia was. He felt that talking to or looking at a woman like her was him being disrespectful toward himself!
Right when Jeremy and Jonah were about to voice out, someone else spoke up first.
“Sophia, I didn’t think that even after so many years, you are still as wild as before.”
Despite being timid at most times, Lyla stepped out with her eyes gleaming. “20 years ago, you loved to cause trouble. 20 years later, you are still so malicious. Shame on you!
“It’s too bad that you’ve picked the wrong target. Lyse is a person of people in her life. She is well- known in Belbanks. She’s not someone whom you can defile and slander with mere words!
“I am also not the same Lyla who would be trampled by you in the past. You may use that evil tongue of yours to insult and shame me. But don’t you dare repeat your old tricks and try to harm Lyse!”
Everyone’s jaw dropped.
Lyla was as they had heard. She was a gentle person, and those were probably the angriest words she had ever said in her entire life.
