An hour ago, Landon called Jeremy over to his side.
“Zoe?” Jeremy’s eyebrows pulled tight.
“I’ll serve my own head on a silver platter if that damned brat wasn’t involved!” Landon roared, fingers quivering angrily around the cigarette he was holding.
“You don’t need to do that. We have tons of food at home,” Jeremy responded.
He got a cigarette from Landon but didn’t light it up. It remained tucked between his fingers. “Zoe is your sister, so I’ll give you one chance to deal with the matter. I’m afraid you won’t like the methods I’d use to deal with this.”
“I keep having this feeling that Zoe was involved in this or knew something about it.”
Landon still had a shred of hope for his sister, so he began doubting himself. “But I don’t have concrete evidence, Jeremy. I feel like Zoe must have known something. Her resentment toward the fact that you and Alyssa are together provides her with a motive as well. But I don’t have proof to make this conclusion, Jeremy.”
“Did you realize how long-winded you’ve become after falling in love?” Jeremy asked, gazing flatly at his friend.
Landon was taken aback for a moment. He then sighed. “I’ve been uniny ?aut ings way in untulluciicu as I used to be now that I have Lauren.”
Jeremy’s fingers tightened around the cigarette. However, he stayed silent, capable of empathizing with Landon.
“I can help you investigate this secretly, Jeremy, but…
“I know. Mr. Cornelius dotes very much on Zoe. You’ll need his support for your relationship with Lauren, too, so you can’t be making rash decisions that would jeopardize yourself in the old man’s eyes,” Jeremy said.
Landon nodded fervently, wearing an expression that said, “You get it!”
Jeremy smiled lightly and patted Landon’s shoulder. “I’ll be the bad guy this time. I hope this doesn’t hurt innocent bystanders but punishes those who deserve it instead.”
Meanwhile, Sophia had rushed over to one of the lounges on the racing grounds to meet Tristan after the race.
“Tristan… I’m coming, Tristan!”
Sophia sometimes felt like she’d become much more youthful after meeting Tristan. Not only that, but she’d become more fearless, too.
While living with the Walsh family, Sophia had hidden her true self and constructed a fake persona for the past 20 years or so. She had long been fed up and tired of having to appeal to Javier every single day.
Sophia had had enough of trying to appease a man she despised with every fiber of her being.
Tristan’s presence was like the life-giving rain that a parched, cracked desert yearned for, completely rejuvenating Sophia. She was deeply entranced, unable to break free from him.
With her heart pounding in excitement, Sophia shakily knocked on the lounge door. But it didn’t open even when she knocked again and again.
In the end, Sophia barged in and locked the door behind her.
Unexpectedly, she was the only one in the room.
“What… Why isn’t he here?” Sophia mumbled.
Just then, she saw a syringe on one of the empty tables in the room.
Sophia couldn’t be more familiar with what it was-her life-saving elixir!
Her breathing quickened as she went over to grab the syringe. Before
It was as if Tristan had a hidden camera aimed right at Sophia. His phone call came at just the opportune moment.
“Where are you, Tristan?” Sophia’s tone was filled with impatience and unbearable desire.
“There are too many eyes here in the racecourse, ma’am. I’m afraid no amount of explanation would be able to clarify any scandals if we were seen meeting one another,” Tristan explained.
He seemed especially considerate of Sophia. “It’s not an issue for me, but I’d be upset if your reputation were affected.”
Tears of gratitude filled Sophia’s eyes. “You’re the best, Tristan. You’re the only one for me.”
“I know you’ve been going through hard times after being off from the meds, so I’ve decided to give it to you as a gift. I hope it brings you some comfort,” Tristan said.
They chatted for a short while before ending the call.
Sophia couldn’t wait any longer. Her bloodshot eyes were wide and starving as she uncapped the syringe. She then injected the entire contents of the syringe into her arm.
“Ahh…” Sophia gasped, her eyes immediately becoming hazy and distant. She melted onto the floor as if made from butter, tears, and snot oozing out of her orifices.
It was an ugly and twisted sight to see.
Sophia was not some proud, respectable businessman’s wife at this moment. She was a mere slave to drugs right now.
After enjoying the high, Sophia slowly went over to the mirror to readjust herself.
Sure enough, she appeared livelier with the drugs in her system. Her skin even seemed to be smoother than before.
For some reason, however, Sophia felt like something was off after injecting the drugs, yet she couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
Suddenly, two knocks could be heard.
The sudden knocking on the door made Sophia jerk up in fright. Her hand clasped her chest as she hunched over, staring at the door.
“Are you in there, Madam Sophia?” Rory’s emotionless voice floated through the door, making Sophia’s heart leap to her throat.
Sophia was suddenly so glad Tristan hadn’t come to their little rendezvous. How could she have possibly hidden such an illicit relationship?
Sophia took a deep breath and went to open the door, acting calm.” What is it?”
“What are you doing here, Madam Sophia? Mr. Javier is searching for you all over the place.” As Rory spoke, his eyes wouldn’t stop peeking behind Sophia into the lounge.
“I was tired, so I found a place to rest. What are you looking for? You think I’m hiding someone?” Sophia leaned back against the door, arms crossed in front of her chest. She sneered. “Only an ugly and perverted mind would view the world as such. Go inside, then. Try to find a man hiding in here, or so help me!”
“That’s not what I meant, ma’am.”
Rory didn’t pursue the matter. He smiled politely and gestured for Sophia to exit the room. “Ladies first, Madam Sophia. Mr. Javier requests your immediate presence in the VIP area. Everyone is present save for you, Madam Sophia and Mr. Javier worries abo speculation.”
A peculiar atmosphere had settled in the VIP area.
Zoe hid behind Cornelius, now pale and rigid as ice.
Max had been by Cornelius’ side and helped him accomplish countless unspeakable acts without leaving any loose ends each time. Why would Jeremy have caught Max this time? It was impossible!
The rest of the Harper family were just as shocked.
“Max … h-how could it be you?” Cornelius was quaking so violently
Cornelius had personally adopted Max from the orphanage when he was a child and spent a lot of effort raising him. On the surface, Max was Cornelius’ personal assistant, but Cornelius had long treated Max as his own son.
“Mr. Cornelius, I-ouch!”
Before Max could finish speaking, Xavier kicked him in the waist, making him fall heavily onto the ground.
Everyone was shocked.
Alyssa’s eyes widened slightly as she grew tense and alert.
She never imagined that Xavier, who usually obediently followed and did as he was told, would have such an unbridled side to him¡ªall just to get revenge for Alyssa himself!
Just then, Jeremy gently wrapped an arm around her waist. He asked gently, “Did he frighten you?”
“Tsk. Frighten my ass,” Alyssa scoffed. Yet she couldn’t help but feel warmth blossom in her chest from the feeling of Jeremy’s hand on her waist.
“It always used to be Xavier who’d calm me down when I was on the edge of blowing up,” Jeremy murmured. He nodded, feeling pleased. This is the first time he’s been unable to hold himself back, all for his dear Madam Alyssa.”
Alyssa’s lashes trembled lightly. Jeremy’s magnetic voice and warm breath on her skin seemed to make an electric current run up her spine. She had the urge to look down, feeling shy.
Xavier had lashed out at lightning speed. He kicked Max again, eyes red with fury. “Motherfucker! How dare you try to hurt Madam Alyssa!”
“You dare hurt one of my own?” Cornelius roared angrily.
Everyone who was a Harper rose and went to stand behind Cornelius. They glared furiously at Xavier, some even eagerly waiting for Cornelius to give them the word to end him.
“He works for me. Touch him, I dare you,” Jeremy spoke up, his gaze icy and laced with anger as it swept across the Harper family’s faces.
