A heavy, fraught silence hung over the space. No one spoke. For a long moment, the quiet was deafening.
Jenarth stared at Robert, flustered and desperate to turn to Isabella for help. But with his back turned to her, he couldn’t see the help he needed. When his gaze met Robert’s, a sudden, unexplainable fear washed over him.
His mind went completely blank.
“The doctor gave me medicine earlier! That’s why I’m not having a reaction now!” Jenarth blurted out, scrambling for an explanation.
Robert glanced toward the medical staff still standing nearby. “Well, look – all the doctors are right here listening. If you’re going to make excuses, at least make them believable. Don’t just say the first thing that pops into your head!
“You know what they say – you can tell the adult by the child. You’re five and a half now, not a baby. And this behavior? It’s pretty pathetic.”
This only made Jenarth panic more. He wanted to run to Isabella and bury himself in her arms, but his feet seemed stuck to the floor. He stumbled awkwardly and fell hard.
And with that fall, the crushed egg bits he’d been hiding in his clothes scattered across the floor.
“Whoa! Everyone see that? The egg was on him the whole time!” Robert exclaimed, sounding like he’d just uncovered buried treasure. “Drew, do you still want to claim the kitchen staff took your leftover egg?”
Drew, who’d just been singled out, stood frozen in confusion.
He genuinely had no idea what was happening!
The pieces of the puzzle clicked into place for everyone watching. They saw Jenarth scramble up from the floor, acting far too flustered for an innocent child. As the cooked egg bits lay scattered around him, he desperately tried to gather them, but his frantic movements only made the mess worse.
“How could this happen?” some parents muttered, their faces hardening with embarrassed realization.
“Jenarth, did you hide the egg I didn’t finish?” Drew pointed a chubby finger and shouted with childish bluntness, “You ate the egg yourself and tried to frame Robert, didn’t you?”
It was a simple question, delivered in a child’s innocent tone, but it struck with the force of undeniable truth.
“No! That’s not true!” Jenarth shook his head, his voice trembling. But caught red-handed, panic had taken over, clouding his thoughts.
All he wanted was his mother. He just wanted to escape this nightmare.
“Mommy!” Jenarth burst into loud, panicked sobs.
“Cut the act,” Robert snapped, his voice sharp and commanding.
The crying stopped instantly. Jenarth stared at Robert in shocked silence, only soft sniffles escaping.
“When you decided to frame me, did you ever stop to think about what would happen when you got caught?” Robert took a step closer, a cold smile playing on his lips.
Jenarth’s eyes were red and puffy. He stared blankly at Robert, lips pressed tightly together, completely lost for words.
Just moments ago, he had been the perfect, pitiful victim. Now, he stood exposed, utterly defeated.
“I warned you from the beginning – don’t mess with me. You can’t handle the consequences.” Robert raised an eyebrow, his gaze intense. “You tried to set me up; you wanted me expelled. But look at you now. Your little plan blew up in your face!”
Jenarth could only stare, completely cowed by Robert’s confidence, too terrified to speak.
The truth was now clear to everyone. Jenarth had accused Robert of putting cooked egg bits in his water. The security footage had shown something, the other children had witnessed a confrontation – but Robert’s bold demonstration had rendered all of it meaningless.
So what about the footage? So what about the witnesses?
Robert had just proven he never put egg bits in any water to harm Jenarth. The allergic reaction had been caused by the egg bits Jenarth himself was carrying.
A child this young had orchestrated all this?
He’d secretly eaten the egg and then tried to pin the blame on someone else?
The parents realized with dawning horror that they had been manipulated by a child, used as unwitting pawns in his scheme. The entire performance had been staged.
It was unbelievable!
A kid so young, willing to risk his own health like this?
“Jenarth, did you really eat the egg yourself?” Drew asked, his eyes wide with innocent shock.
Jenarth shook his head violently. “No! I didn’t!”
Overwhelmed by panic, Jenarth rushed forward and grabbed Robert’s hand. “Robert, I don’t know how the egg bits got in my pocket! I must have gotten it all wrong! You didn’t put anything in my cup. I… I must’ve accidentally touched my mouth with my hand after handling the egg! That’s why I had a reaction!”
Robert looked down at him, his eyes darkening.
Seeing this, Jenarth shrank back instinctively. “Robert, I’m just stupid, okay? I’m sorry! Please… please don’t hit me!”
With that single sentence, Jenarth had redirected everyone’s attention back to Robert’s alleged violence. The coldness in Robert’s eyes and his aggressive stance certainly made it look like he was about to strike.
Jenarth’s terrified expression stirred a wave of pity among the onlookers.
Robert glanced at him, deliberately changing his tone as he laughed coldly. “See? This kid’s a natural performer – so good at playing the victim! What a waste of talent…”
When Jenarth met Robert’s gaze, a chill ran down his spine. He tried to pull his hand back, but Robert’s grip was like a vise – there was no breaking free.
“Let me go!”
“You’re just a kid, but you’re already pulling this kind of garbage. Buying people off on your first day, setting others up on purpose. What kind of monster will you become when you grow up?” Robert suddenly raised his voice.
“Didn’t you claim I hit you? Well, I’m not even going to bother denying it. Didn’t your mother ever teach you that if you do wrong, you get punished?”
Staring back at Robert, Jenarth sensed genuine danger. He wanted to fight back, but he was no match for Robert’s strength – he couldn’t move an inch.
He wanted to run, but there was no escape.
“Since you’re so determined to accuse me, I might as well give you something real to cry about.” The next instant, Robert’s palm connected sharply with Jenarth’s face.
The loud slap echoed through the space. Jenarth spun from the force and crashed to the floor.
He couldn’t believe he’d actually been hit. Lying there in utter humiliation, he reached up to touch his cheek – it was already swollen, marked with five clear finger stripes.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, Jenarth burst into loud, panicked sobs.
“Jenarth!” Isabella stood frozen, shocked that Robert had actually dared to hit her son – right in front of teachers, classmates, and Carter.
That bastard Robert – how could he have the nerve?
“My poor Jenarth!” Isabella scooped him up, sobbing dramatically.
Robert watched the scene unfold, a look of pure contempt in his eyes. His gaze then shifted to Carter, who still stood there in stunned disbelief.
“Mr. Myers, you see now? This is the ‘precious son’ you’ve been protecting.”
Having said his piece, Robert turned a mocking glare toward the other parents. “Where’s all that big talk from earlier? What happened to it? Who just said they’d get on their knees and apologize?”
His words sent a wave of panic through the crowd.
But Robert wasn’t about to let them off that easily. He crossed his arms, radiating arrogance. “I’ve got all the time in the world. You can kneel down one by one – I’ll wait right here.”
