The sound was sharp and loud, and the maid’s face instantly turned red and swollen.
“Are you deaf? I told you to bring Elena here!”
The maid, covering her face, began to sob. Thinking about Elena’s current condition, her body trembled. “Ms. Daniella, Elena has gone mad!”
“What? Mad?” Daniella clearly didn’t believe her. “How could she go mad for no reason? I think it’s just an excuse for you useless people to cover up your mistakes.”
With that, she began to hit the maid again, kicking and punching her. The maid curled up on the ground, protecting her head, too scared to fight back. “It’s true, Elena really has gone mad. We all saw it. Mr. Quinn already took her away.”
Exhausted from hitting her, Daniella finally stopped, snorting coldly. “Then what about Abigail? How is Abigail?”
“Ms. Gibson?” The maid replied in confusion, “Ms. Gibson is perfectly fine in her room.”
Daniella knew at once that the maid had failed to carry out her instructions about Elena. She had humiliated herself so badly today, and yet Abigail was fine. Daniella was about to lose her mind in frustration.
“You useless fools! You can’t even handle a simple task! What good are you?” Daniella grew angrier and kicked the maid in the chest.
The room was filled with the maid’s scream before everything went silent.
Elena had gone mad, and nearly all the maids saw her acting crazed, trying to cut off her own skin with a knife.
The next day, her parents came to resign for her, saying she was ill and couldn’t continue working for the Gibson family.
Of course, everyone knew Elena had gone mad. They also heard that another maid, who had worked with Daniella, had taken leave as well.
Gossip quickly spread among the maids, with rumors that Daniella had driven Elena insane, and that the other maid had been beaten by her too. Fear spread, and everyone became cautious.
Abigail heard these rumors while she was reading in her room.
Chloe had already been destroyed by them, and time had passed long enough that even if there was evidence, they would have destroyed it by now. Taking legal action for revenge was no longer an option.
But Abigail had her own way of getting revenge.
Elena was just an accomplice, and her fate could be considered the interest for the past five years. As for Daniella, the true culprit, Abigail would not let her off so easily.
Abigail had spent two uneventful days at the Gibson residence, but early this morning, she was woken up to act like a rag doll, being fussed over by a group of servants – getting her makeup done and trying on outfit after outfit.
Looking at the row of fancy dresses in front of her, Abigail could immediately tell how seriously the Gibson family took the Hawthorne family’s banquet.
Since that was the case, she looked forward even more to the disappointed expressions on their faces.
“All you need to do today is stay quietly by your mom’s side. If I find out you said something you shouldn’t have, you know exactly what the consequences will be,” Marshall warned her again before they left, still uneasy.
Abigail glanced at him without replying. She had her own reasons for going to the Hawthorne family’s banquet today.
Just then, Daniella slowly walked down the stairs. Compared to Abigail, she looked like she was attending a grand ball.
She wore a pink off-the-shoulder evening gown with a long train trailing along the floor. The dress was encrusted with countless sparkling diamonds, dazzling under the lights like a princess from a fairy tale.
Abigail blinked in confusion. Isn’t Daniella the one who claims she has no interest in marrying into the Hawthorne family? Then what is she doing dressed like this?
Her question was soon answered.
As soon as they got out of the car, Daniella flitted away like a butterfly. “Mason!”
Not far away stood a man in a white suit. He had a tall, straight posture and a handsome face.
Based on what Abigail had read in the Hawthorne family’s records, he was their adopted son – Mason Hawthorne.
It was said that Lucas’ mother, Aubrey Lane, was especially fond of this adopted son and treated him like her own.
When Mason saw Daniella, a faint smile appeared on his face. “Daniella, you’re here.”
Daniella quickly walked up to him, and the two of them began chatting happily.
Watching Daniella’s behavior, Abigail instantly saw through her intentions.
Aubrey only had one biological son, Lucas. But even though Mason was adopted, Aubrey had openly acknowledged him as the second son of the Hawthorne family. While Lucas had been sick, she had even pushed for Mason to take charge of the Hawthorne Group.
If Lucas really didn’t pull through, Mason might become the sole heir of the Hawthorne family.
The Gibson family really knew how to play their cards.
Abigail followed Helen into the banquet hall. Inside, the guests were dressed in glamorous clothes, laughing and chatting, their voices mixing with the clinking of glasses into a loud hum.
Helen skillfully mingled with the surrounding socialites, making no attempt to introduce Abigail.
The women exchanged a few knowing glances but said nothing.
Still, the way they looked at Abigail made her deeply uncomfortable.
She couldn’t be bothered to deal with them. Instead, she focused on figuring out how to slip away. She had to see Lucas with her own eyes before making her next move.
While Helen wasn’t paying attention, Abigail slowed her pace and didn’t follow. By the time Helen noticed, Abigail had already vanished from the hall.
Helen called Adrian over. “Go find that b*tch Abigail right now. Don’t let her embarrass me here.”
Adrian had been happily chatting with a few executives, but Abigail’s disappearance sparked a surge of irritation in him.
Meanwhile, Abigail had already changed out of the bothersome dress and found one of the Hawthorne family’s servants. Using her own tricks, she managed to get the exact location of Lucas’ room.
She snapped her fingers, and the servant snapped out of a daze, looking at her in confusion. “Miss, would you like something to drink?”
Abigail shook her head and turned to leave.
She knew that in a place like the Hawthorne Mansion, there would be surveillance and bodyguards everywhere. If she wanted to see Lucas, the usual methods wouldn’t work.
Before long, she jumped down from a window, landing lightly inside the room.
The décor was simple and calm, with dark tones that gave it a peaceful atmosphere. A few green plants sat by the bedside, adding some life to the otherwise cold room. Her eyes slowly moved to the bed – there lay a man, who could only be Lucas.
Abigail walked to the bedside, her gaze landing on Lucas’ face. His features looked as though they had been carved from fine marble – his brows sharp and noble, nose straight and high, lips full and well-shaped, the corners of his mouth slightly raised. Just based on appearance, he was undoubtedly a sleeping prince.
She couldn’t help but stare, slightly entranced. With looks like that, it was no wonder Stonebridge’s heiresses flocked to him.
A moment later, she snapped out of it and reached out, placing her fingers on Lucas’ pulse, checking it carefully.
