“Wait and see. I’m sure Evan will send someone soon. Whether they come to save you or to kill you will depend on your luck.”
With that, he left.
After leaving the dungeon, Eustace didn’t idle around. He sent someone to find the doctor who attended to Evan. The medical record had to be fake- Evan must have bribed that doctor.
What Eustace needed to do now was to find evidence of the bribery.
Get Rid of Him
Unexpectedly, despite Eustace’s thorough investigation of the doctor’s background, he found nothing. Did the doctor help Evan for free? No way.
Eustace frowned as his temples throbbed. “Continue to investigate. Since his finances are fine, then investigate the people around him. I don’t believe he didn’t take a penny from Evan.”
“Okay,” Vincent responded. He could tell that Eustace was irritated.
He placed the lunch on Eustace’s desk, cautiously saying, “Have a meal first, sir. You will have stomach pains if you don’t eat on time.”
Eustace waved his hand, disinterested.
“Mr. Quincey, even if you don’t care about yourself, you should think about Miss Zellweger. You promised her to take good care of yourself,” Vincent said, having no choice but to mention Danika.
Indeed, when Eustace heard Danika’s name, he perked up slightly. However, as soon as he remembered what had happened yesterday, his mood turned sour again. “She doesn’t have time to care about me. I’m afraid she is busy taking care of Evan,’ he grumbled.
“That’s because Miss Zellweger was deceived. As long as you take good care of yourself and investigate the truth clearly, she will naturally come back.” Vincent knew the whole story and had complete faith in their president. However, he also knew that from Danika’s perspective, Eustace’s attitude toward Evan could lead her to believe that Eustace had done something terrible.
Therefore, it was useless to say anything unless they found evidence.
Perhaps because he agreed with Vincent’s reasoning, Eustace finally picked up the food.
“Go do your job.”
Seeing Eustace ready to eat, Vincent breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that his words were only effective when they involved Danika.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, when Danika had gone out to buy food for Evan, Howard walked into the man’s ward and whispered, “Boss, we found the missing man.”
“Where is he?” Evan’s eyes wavered.
“In Eustace’s hands, and he’s still being held captive,” Howard replied.
That was not good news for Evan. “Find a way to get rid of him,” he said.
“Boss, what do you mean?” Howard could hardly believe it.
“Although he might not betray us, who knows what he has told Eustace?
Therefore, we cannot keep him alive.” Evan was ruthless and merciless. He would not take the risk even if the man had yet to reveal anything. He would not let his underlings, who knew everything, appear in front of Danika. Even if Danika did not believe them immediately, she would become suspicious.
Howard’s face became solemn as he disagreed with the decision. After all, he considered his comrades his brothers. Since he was still alive, they should save him. However, he was powerless to change Evan’s decision.
At that moment, Danika entered the hospital room and noticed the ugly expressions on their faces. She asked, “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
Evan looked at Howard, who understood the message conveyed by his gaze.
“Miss Zellweger, his condition is getting worse. I think we should find a renowned doctor to examine him. He can’t go on like this for the rest of his life,” Howard said.
Danika agreed with it and nodded. “Yes, Evan, you should have thought of this earlier.”
If Evan had accepted the examination when Eustace brought Dr. Gaarder before, they wouldn’t be in their current situation. Alas, Dr. Gaarder had left the country, and finding a doctor at his level would be difficult.
1 Don’t Want You to Be Unhappy
“I’ve been investigating Dr. Gaarder’s whereabouts these past few days, and I’ve found out where he is now,” Howard suddenly said.
The news caused Danika’s eyes to light up. “Have you really found him?” She couldn’t believe it and looked at Howard in disbelief.
“Yes, he’s abroad and has no plan on coming here again,” Howard said. After all, he had just left the country, so it was understandable that he didn’t want to return.
Danika thought the same way and said, “Have you contacted him? Is he willing to treat Evan?’
Dr. Gaarder was internationally renowned and had previously been rejected by Evan, so it was likely that he would reject them this time.
“Dr. Gaarder is willing to do it, but on the condition that we go to his hospital abroad for treatment/ Howard said.
Danika thought it made sense and said, “Then let’s go. We cant miss an opportunity like this.”
“Danika, will you come with me?” Evan asked nervously.
After a brief moment, Danika answered, “Of course, I promised to take care of you, didn’t I?”
Besides, she wanted Evan to accept the treatment.
“Dr. Gaarder has seen my medical records and said that even if I go for treatment, I won’t recover in a short time, which means we’ll have to stay abroad for a long time. Are you willing to?” Evan was very nervous.
If it was a short period, he wouldn’t worry so much, but for a long time, no one could say for sure how long it would take.
When Danika heard that Evan didn’t know how long they would have to stay, her expression shifted. She had grown up here, and her career and family were also here; hence, she was afraid of the prospect of going abroad indefinitely.
The light in Evan’s eyes dimmed a little. ‘It’s okay, Danika. If you don’t want to go, we won’t go. Actually, I think it’s fine the way things are now.’
“But this is your only chance!” Howard exclaimed, upset.
“That’s enough!” Evan interrupted him. ‘I can’t be so selfish. This is Danika’s home, so how can I force her to leave with me?”
Howard pouted, very unhappy.
“Evan, why don’t you get treatment over there? I will visit you whenever I have time. What about that?” Danika suggested.
Evan, however, smiled bitterly. “Danika, I’ll be honest with you. After the accident, I’ve always felt that life is meaningless. I might have died long ago if it weren’t for you.”
“Evan…” Danika looked at him in shock.
“It’s okay, Danika. As long as you’re by my side, even if I have to sit in a wheelchair for the rest of our lives, I’m willing to do it.” Evan only had one goal in mind, and that was to make Danika stay by his side.
Danika sighed. Instead of answering, she said, “Let me think about it.”
“Danika, don’t force yourself. I don’t want you to be unhappy,” Evan said as she left.
She walked out of the ward and took a deep breath. She felt an immense amount of pressure on her shoulders.
Howard followed her outside.
“Miss Zellweger, I know I have no right to ask anything of you, but…ever since the accident, he has been really down. If it continues like this, I’m afraid he won’t last much longer. So, I’m begging you to go with us. Maybe we can cure him quickly, and then you won’t have to worry anymore. What do you think?”
More Evidence
Danika didn’t return to Evan’s house when she left the hospital. Instead, she went to Zelliot Inc to look for Stephanie.
Now, Stephanie was the general manager of Zelliot Inc, and although the Zelliots were not yet well- known in Bardoff City, they were moving up in ranks each day.
Looking at Stephanie, all dressed up and proper in her blazer, she exuded the air of a successful woman.
“Stephanie, you are really amazing.” Never had Danika expected that there would be a day that Stephanie would become like this.
Fate was unpredictable in many ways.
For instance, Danika became a daughter of the Zellweger family, and after finally handing the reins of the company to a reliable management team, she thought she could be free from then on. However, at that moment, she felt that she had lost her freedom completely.
She couldn’t just ignore everything. Evan was her savior, so she couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
“Danika, you don’t seem to be in a good mood.” Stephanie poured her a cup of coffee and sat down beside her.
Danika sighed. She came to find Stephanie just to voice her frustration. She told Stephanie everything that had happened recently and asked, “Should I go?”
“Well, I don’t think you should. I wouldn’t support that,” Stephanie said.” Although Evan saved you, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your life for him. If you like him, then it’s different. You have been taking care of him, but if you still follow him abroad, your relationship with Eustace will be over.” Danika was aware of that.
Stephanie held Danika’s hand and said, “Danika, I know you feel guilty, but there’s a limit to things we can promise others. You should think about yourself. Don’t only think about others.”
Stephanie’s words made sense to Danika, but she couldn’t bring herself to not do anything about Evan.
“But if I don’t go, Evan won’t go, and he will be ruined for life.” Although there was no guarantee that Dr. Gaarder could cure Evan, at least there was a chance. But if she didn’t go, there would be no chance at all.
“That’s his choice. If he chooses to do that, the consequences are his responsibility, not yours.” Stephanie didn’t like the way Evan pressured Danika to go.
Danika still couldn’t decide, and upon realizing that, Stephanie suggested,” C’mon, let’s go somewhere else. I’ll treat you to dinner.’
“Okay.” Danika nodded in agreement, realizing that thinking like that would not lead to a solution.
With that, the two of them walked out of Zelliot Inc.
Meanwhile, Eustace was drinking in a private room at a bar, with Paul sitting opposite him. Both of them were not in a good mood.
“The doctor you asked me to investigate, this is what I found about him,’ Paul said, throwing a stack of information at Eustace.
Eustace was surprised to hear that. When he asked Paul to try and find some clues, he hadn’t been expecting any results.
As he paged through the information, Paul added, “The transaction was performed very cautiously through the black market; that’s why you couldn’t find it.” Only people involved in the black market like him could find it.
“Thank you.” After reading the information, Eustace thanked him sincerely.
