Eustace chuckled lightly, not wanting to argue with her. If she said it was the same, then so be it. There was no need to have a debate over the issue. After all, he made it for her to eat. As long as she was happy, that was all that mattered.
As they ate, Danika thought of the news she’d seen about the Quinceys and became worried. She asked, “Is everything okay with the Quinceys? Things don’t look too good.”
“It’s okay. Even if something happens, it has nothing to do with me,” Eustace replied, continuing to put food on her plate.
“Aren’t you concerned that the Quinceys will lose their position at the top of the Ten
Elites because of this?” Danika asked. After all, many families were eyeing that position; even her father had thought about it.
Eustace smiled and looked at Danika with fondness. “Do you think I care about those things? Besides, even if we do fall, don’t I have the ability to climb back up once I officially inherit the Quincey family?”
If he didn’t have that ability, why would he even bother fighting for the position to become the heir?
Danika thought his words made sense. At this point, the Quincey family didn’t have much to do with Eustace; he was just an ordinary worker working for the Quinceys. Any trouble the
Quinceys faced didn’t really concern him until the head officially handed over the family to him.
She didn’t continue asking and felt that she’d been overthinking things.
“Evan came to see me today,” Danika suddenly said, looking at Eustace.
Eustace’s hand that was holding a fork paused for a moment, then he quickly resumed eating like normal. “Really? What did he say to you?”
“He told me the truth,” Danika answered without being specific about the details.
“I didn’t lie to you either. You didn’t ask me about Xavier’s matter. Besides, you already knew I did it,” Eustace said with a smile.
That was true. Eustace had never hidden the matter from
Danika, but he hadn’t told her that it was Evan who had done the deed.
“I know.” Danika nodded, not accusing Eustace of lying to her.
“I’m just curious. How did you persuade Evan to help you?” Danika asked, somewhat intrigued.
Eustace felt a little embarrassed and casually replied, “It’s nothing. I just have some leverage over him. If he didn’t think it was something incriminating to him, he wouldn’t have caved in and let me have control over him.”
“I see.” Danika nodded thoughtfully but didn’t ask any more questions.
After a moment of contemplation, she suddenly asked, “Do you think I can convince
Evan to give up the path he’s currently on?”
Eustace stopped his movements, and upon seeing that Danika wasn’t joking, his expression became serious. “It’s very unlikely.”
He knew how difficult it had been for Evan to get to where he was today. If he were to give up just because Danika wanted him to, he wouldn’t have made it to this point.
“That’s what I thought too. I talked to him today, but he refused.” Danika sighed bitterly.
She really didn’t want to see him get into trouble.
“Don’t overthink it. You’ve done your best. It’s his own choice.” Eustace was not surprised by Evan’s refusal to give it all up. He would be surprised if it was the contrary.
Danika sighed again and forced a smile. “Yeah, I know. I’m just chatting about this matter casually.”
That topic ended there, and neither of them spoke again. They finished their meal in silence.
After seeing Eustace off, Danika returned to her room and lay on the bed, feeling exhausted. She was exhausted from the events of the day, so she quickly fell into a deep slumber.
Yakov Takes Over
The atmosphere in the Quincey family was oppressive. First, Zeke’s eldest son passed away. Then, his eldest grandson was sent to prison. He’d lived many years but had never encountered such a bleak situation.
In the living room, the whole Quincey family was silent. Julian looked at his father and grandfather, then turned to his sister for help.
“Isabelle, when can we leave?”
Their grandfather called them over to have dinner, but now he wouldn’t let them go.
Julian had never liked staying in Quincey Manor, so he moved out as soon as he became an adult. He rarely spent as much time there as he did today.
Isabelle gave him a cold look and said, “Be quiet. Can’t you read the situation now?”
Their grandfather obviously had something to say, and it was likely related to the current situation of the Quincey family. Julian didn’t offer any valuable suggestions but was in a hurry to leave instead. If Zeke knew, he would be furious.
Julian was dismayed at her reply. He’d made plans to go out with his friends that night. If he didn’t leave soon, he’d miss out on the chance to join them. Although he couldn’t wait to leave, he dared not say it out loud. He didn’t want to provoke his grandfather.
After a while, Zeke sighed heavily. “Yakov, you’re aware of our situation right now, aren’t you?”
“Yes.” Yakov nodded.
“Tell me. What do you think?” Zeke looked at him, but he didn’t have much hope for his second son. Although he was meticulous in his thinking, he was too verbose and couldn’t accomplish great things.
However, Zeke didn’t have much of a choice now.
Yakov raised his head and looked at his father. “It’s obvious that someone is targeting our family, intentionally releasing some bad news about us to cause panic among outsiders.”
In just a few days, Quincey Group’s stock had hit several consecutive daily limit downs, and they’d had lost at least tens of billions in their market value. But that wasn’t the most crucial point, as the market value would eventually recover as long as the crisis subsided. The key concern now was thinking of a way to resolve the current crisis.
“You’re right,” Zeke agreed. He knew who was behind all the trouble, but he chose not to disclose it explicitly.
He said to Yakov, “Now that your elder brother is gone, and Luke won’t get out of prison any time soon, the Quinceys are in your care now.”
Although he didn’t trust Yakov’s abilities, he had no choice but to put him to the task.
Yakov wasn’t very capable, but Zeke believed that his second son could become a fitting head of the family with his patient guidance. After all, both his sons were intelligent.
“Don’t worry, Dad. I won’t let the Quinceys fall into the hands of others!” With those words, Yakov would take on the responsibility of leading the Quinceys and sorting out the mess it was currently in.
Zeke nodded with satisfaction. If Yakov could resolve everything perfectly this time, he would announce to the outside world that he’d officially handed over the Quincey family to him. Even if Eustace had objections to it, what could he do? After all, Quincey Group’s shares were in Zeke’s hands, and he could give them to whomever he wanted. No matter how powerful Eustace was, he couldn’t control Zeke’s will.
Upon leaving Quincey Manor, Julian took a deep breath of the fresh air outside and looked at his father standing beside him. “Dad, are you really going to take over the family?”
“What else can I do? With the current situation, the family will fall into Eustace’s hands if I don’t take over.” His thoughts were the same as Zeke’s-Eustace was an outsider to the main family, even if he was a Quincey. Although Julian didn’t really care for their family affairs, the death of Xavier affected him deeply.
“That’s true. But I’m afraid of Eustace…”
“Don’t worry. I can protect myself.” Besides, would Eustace dare to attack him? His guess was Eustace wasn’t so bold as to make another drastic move like that unless he wanted to spend the rest of his life in prison.
You Better Not Repeat Those Words
Julian sighed and muttered, “Actually, I don’t think handing the company over to Eustace is a bad idea. He’s more capable than all of us, and with him managing Quincey Group, we can make more money each year. Isn’t it good to earn money like that without working hard?”
He couldn’t understand why it was so hard for his father and the late Xavier to accept
Eustace taking over the Quincey family.
Before Yakov could even rebuke him, Isabelle, standing beside them, couldn’t take it anymore. “Shut up! Do you really think Eustace is a good person? If we hand the family over to him, are you sure we can survive?”
“Isabelle…”
“We won’t force you to fight for the position of becoming the heir, but you better not repeat those words again,” Isabelle interrupted Julian and didn’t want to hear him say another word.
Julian murmured a perfunctory “Okay.” It was unclear whether he’d really taken his sister’s words seriously.
Yakov glanced at him and didn’t say anything further.’ Alright, let’s go home.”
Three days later, it was Harvey Spade’s funeral. Danika promised to come and pay her respects to Harvey, and she showed up at the cemetery as promised, holding some white roses. She followed the crowd and placed the flowers by Harvey’s coffin, then walked toward Christopher to offer her condolences.
“I’m sorry for your loss. How are you holding up?”
“Thank you. I’m fine,” Christopher replied. Over the past few days, while handling his grandfather’s funeral, he’d seen the true colors of everyone in the Spade family. He wouldn’t show any weakness in front of outsiders.
Danika nodded and said nothing else as she moved over to the side.
Alexandra also came to pay her respects to Harvey, and she was now standing next to Christopher. Although Christopher and Danika hadn’t said much to each other, and everything seemed normal, she felt very uncomfortable. Perhaps it was because
Christopher had previously been very fond of Danika, so when Alexandra saw her appear, she felt a sense of danger.
Christopher wasn’t in the mood to concern himself over his girlfriend’s apprehension.
After everyone had finished paying their respects, he signaled for the burial to be carried out and didn’t show much emotion on his face.
By noon, most of the guests had already left. Danika walked up to offer some words of comfort before leaving herself. However, before she could even get close to
Christopher, she was intercepted by Alexandra.
“Miss Zellweger, Christopher isn’t in a good mood today and may not have time to entertain you. It’s best if you just leave. If
Danika raised an eyebrow, looking slightly amused. “Can you make decisions on behalf of Christopher now? If I remember correctly, you haven’t gotten married to him and become one of the Spades yet.”
Danika felt it was unreasonable to leave without saying a word to Christopher. If she did that, Christopher might even think she was being rude.
“I’m just suggesting. After all, I don’t want Christopher to be too tired,” Alexandra countered.
“I understand your concern for him. But as a guest, it’s necessary for me to say goodbye before leaving. Otherwise, wouldn’t it make me seem rude?” Danika asked.
Seeing Danika’s persistence, Alexandra couldn’t help but ask, “Do you really just want to say goodbye to Christopher, or is there something else on your mind?”
