Amy nodded and thanked her. “Thank you, Dr. Zellweger! You’re a good person.”
“This is what I should do. As you grow up, you must always remember to treat your mother well.” Helga probably wouldn’t have made it this far if it weren’t for Amy.
Amy nodded like a little chick pecking at rice. Helga’s sister, who was standing at the side, also thanked her, her eyes red.
Danika beckoned to her and said, “Helga still needs to stay in the ICU for the next few days, and the nurses will take care of her. You take Amy back and rest. When she is transferred to the general ward in a few days, you’ll have to take care of her yourself.”
“Sure, Dr. Zellweger.” Helga’s sister nodded.
Danika felt that Helga’s luck was not so bad after all.
Although she was sick and had met a heartless man, she had her sister and daughter, so there was still a sense of hope for her in her life.
After everything was arranged, Danika got up and walked toward her office. After she changed her clothes, she was ready to end her shift.
She was exhausted from the surgery. Looking at the time and seeing that it was almost 8 pm, she couldn’t help but feel that time passed quickly.
“Yesterday, you said you didn’t need to work overtime, but you’ve been busy until now.
Aren’t you tired, Dr. Zellweger?” The husky voice had sounded right beside Danika before
Eustace walked over and stood before her.
Danika turned to look at the person who spoke, and her lips curled up into a smile.
“Why would I feel tired when doing what I love?”
“Okay, so Dr. Zellweger is sacrificing her personal life for the greater good. How admirable.” Eustace teased and pulled her toward his car.
“What do you want to eat? I have to properly reward the hardworking Dr. Zellweger.” Eustace started his car and turned to ask Danika, who was seated in the passenger seat.
Together with Her
Eustace took Danika to the grocery store. They eventually decided to cook at home.
Of course, it was mainly Eustace’s decision, as Danika was already tired and wanted to have a quick meal and go home to rest. Eustace insisted that she didn’t need to do anything and just needed to wait for the food, so Danika reluctantly agreed to go with him to buy groceries.
“You’re the mighty Mr. Quincey, yet you’re buying groceries yourself. This really damages your reputation as a CEO,” Danika joked as she walked beside Eustace, unable to resist teasing him.
She looked at the man, who was six feet tall and dressed in a suit and tie, standing next to her. It looked as if he was there to acquire the grocery store instead of something as banal as buying groceries. He looked very out of place in the grocery store.
“You speak as if CEOs aren’t human beings,” Eustace replied while selecting the vegetables. “Don’t we still have to eat like normal people? It’s just that we can just delegate many of our tasks to others.”
If it weren’t for Danika, he naturally wouldn’t appear in such a place.
He could have his helper buy the vegetables if he wanted to cook, or if he didn’t feel like cooking, he could have asked his chef to whip up a delicious meal for him. But for Danika, he wanted to do these things himself, and most importantly, he wanted to do them with her.
“Well, you do make some sense, Mr. Quincey.” Danika didn’t argue with him. Since Eustace liked to cook, she was happy to let him do it. After all, she just needed to wait, and food will be served. She could simply sit back and enjoy herself.
Eustace knew Danika’s preferences well enough that he didn’t need to ask her what she would like to eat while buying the groceries. He just chose everything himself.
When they were about to leave, Danika saw a pair of slippers for sale and pulled Eustace over. “I don’t have suitable slippers for you at my house. Let’s buy you a pair.”
“Okay.” Eustace didn’t refuse. Danika’s gesture of preparing these things meant she’d started to accept his frequent visits to her house. He had no reason to refuse such a good gesture.
After buying slippers for Eustace, Danika wandered around the boutique shop.
As spring approached, the shop was full of fluffy and cute stuffed animals. Glancing at the fuzzy and adorable stuffed toys, Danika had a warm feeling in her heart.
When Eustace saw her standing in front of a small red teddy bear for a long time, he took the bear and said, “Do you like it? Just buy it if you do.”
“I’m just taking a look.” She liked stuffed animals but rarely bought them.
On the one hand, they weren’t very practical; on the other hand, buying them made her look kind of childish.
“Dr. Zellweger, you’re an adult, and you have every right to buy the things you like,” Eustace said.
Danika pursed her lips and didn’t say anything more. Perhaps Eustace was right. She didn’t need to hesitate so much and should just buy whatever she liked.
The two went home after exiting the store. Danika was very hungry by the time they came home from the grocery store after work. “Can you give me a rough estimation of how long it will take for the food to be done? I’m not sure if I can hold on anymore.”
“Very soon,” Eustace said. Then, he walked toward the kitchen but didn’t give her an exact answer.
In the kitchen, Eustace started washing the vegetables. Danika walked in and said, “Let me help you do the prepping. You’ll be in charge of cooking.”
She thought they would be able to eat earlier this way.
“Okay.” Eustace didn’t refuse either.
The two of them quickly got busy. If one didn’t know better, one would think they were a couple who had been married for many years. They worked in perfect harmony, chatting and laughing all the way, looking like a peaceful and happy couple.
Potato Chunks
Things were far from being as good as they seemed. Danika rarely cooked, so washing the vegetables was manageable, but chopping them up…not so much.
“Dr. Zellweger, are you just as careless when performing surgery on patients?” Eustace picked up the potato strips-or, more accurately, the potato chunks.
Danika looked a little embarrassed. “I haven’t really chopped vegetables before.”
“Right, just watch from the side.” Eustace took the knife from her and didn’t let her continue with the chopping.
Danika became even more embarrassed and obediently stood like a child who had done something wrong. Eustace covered up the laughter he was about to let out by clearing his throat and sending her downstairs to buy marinara sauce.
“Do we not have any at home?” Danika asked. She really didn’t want to go out.
“No. I didn’t notice we didn’t have any,” Eustace replied. It had been a long time since he cooked at Danika’s house, so he’d forgotten about it. He didn’t think buying any at the grocery store would be necessary either.
Upon hearing that, Danika could only put on her shoes pitifully and go out to buy what
Eustace had requested.
When she got to the grocery store downstairs, the female shopkeeper, who had greeted Danika a few times and knew she was a doctor, looked like she wanted to gossip. “Danika, is that guy your boyfriend? I often see you two coming and going together.”
“It’s not like that! You misunderstood. He lives right across from me, so we often come and go together,” Danika explained.
The shopkeeper smiled mysteriously. “Is that so? Why do I feel like he looks at you differently?”
After all, she had a lot of experience and could naturally see that Eustace had a different attitude toward Danika. No one would believe that he was just a neighbor and nothing else.
Danika smiled awkwardly. She quickly paid for the sauce and left. However, she couldn’t help but think about it on the way back.
She’d gotten closer to Eustace recently. Not just the shopkeeper but many people at the hospital had also asked about their relationship, and they probably thought Eustace was her boyfriend. Danika was a little frustrated, as she hadn’t really figured it all out.
Perhaps she was also waiting, expecting something to happen.
In the blink of an eye, the elevator stopped. She walked out and quickly shook off those unnecessary thoughts. By the time she reached her apartment, she was back to her usual, composed self.
“Here’s the sauce you wanted. Is there anything else I can help with?” Danika asked while handing Eustace the sauce.
“No. Go sit in the living room and wait for a while. We’ll be able to eat soon,” Eustace said.
Eustace had already started cooking, and his movements were skillful. At that moment, he didn’t look like a CEO but more like a chef.
Danika felt like laughing as she watched him. She turned around and walked to the living room. Sitting on the couch, she texted Stephanie, talking about anything and everything. Soon, they were texting about Eustace cooking at Danika’s place.
Stephanie’s text read, “Ahhh, I really want to come over and have a meal with you guys. I’ve never tasted Mr. Quincey’s cooking before.”
Danika glanced at the kitchen and saw that Eustace was still busy. She snapped a photo sneakily and sent it to Stephanie with the message, “You won’t get to try his cooking, but I can give you a peek.”
Stephanie then replied, “You’re right. I didn’t get any food, but I’ve just been served a full plate of PDA.”
Danika rolled her eyes and suggested that Stephanie go find Leonard, who would surely be happy to cook for her.
Stephanie replied with a laughing emoji.
Danika put away her phone and smiled with satisfaction. She casually checked the news for the day and found that most of it was related to the Quinceys. It was then she realized how bad their situation was.
She looked at Eustace, who was still in the kitchen but couldn’t see any sign of distress on his face. Was he not concerned, or was he making light of it so she wouldn’t worry about him?
It’s His Own Choice
“What are you thinking about? I said dinner was ready, but you didn’t respond. Didn’t you say you were starving?” Eustace was right behind her without her noticing.
Danika snapped out of her thoughts. “Nothing. Can we finally eat? Awesome!”
She got up and walked toward the dining table.
Eustace did have a knack for cooking. In just a short while, he made three dishes and one soup, and they all looked and smelled delicious.
“Eustace, if you ever go bankrupt, consider opening a small restaurant. I’ll definitely come and support you.” With this level of cooking skill, Danika believed that Eustace could make it big if he opened a restaurant.
Eustace laughed at her suggestion and handed her a plate. “If I become the boss of a restaurant, will you be the lady boss?”
Danika was slightly stunned and pretended not to have heard him. “These French fries taste good. Even though I cut them into huge chunks, that doesn’t affect the taste, does it?”
“Is that so?” Eustace asked in return, clearly implying it would be strange if the taste was the same.
Danika nodded. “Yeah, it’s the same. Don’t worry about the slight differences.”
