“Robert, head inside. I’ll pick you up later.” Victoria reminded him to be good at school.
Robert nodded, shot a disdainful look toward Carter’s “family,” swung his backpack over his shoulder, and walked inside.
Once again, Robert had blown him off. Carter was seconds from losing his cool when Isabella grabbed his hand. “Carter, we’re at the kindergarten entrance. Let’s not make a scene over nothing.”
Carter looked at Isabella, and felt his anger start to fade.
“Victoria, what a surprise running into you here,” Isabella said with a gentle smile, nudging Jenarth forward slightly. “It’s Jenarth’s first day. Carter didn’t want me to handle the registration alone, so he came with us.”
Victoria just smiled lightly. “You two go ahead with the registration. I won’t disturb you.” She turned to walk away.
“Victoria, you came here on purpose, didn’t you? Just to create a chance to see me.”
Carter’s voice carried after her. Victoria couldn’t help but laugh when she heard him.
She was really amused by his confidence.
She turned back to face him. “Carter, when are you going to get that ego of yours under control? You think way too highly of yourself. One day it’s going to backfire on you.”
“Isabella just told you – I’m here to get Jenarth registered. Why do you always have to pick a fight? Can we just talk about this like adults?” Carter looked at her, frustrated. “When will you ever go back to the way you were before?”
“Never,” Victoria fired back. “Carter, wake up and face the truth. This is Robert’s kindergarten. I’m just dropping him off like any mother would. But you – how many times have you ever brought Robert to school? ‘Creating a chance to see you’? Don’t flatter yourself.”
Carter’s gaze locked on Victoria. Her posture was sharp, without an ounce of backing down in her demeanor – he knit his brows tight, unconsciously. “So you’re still hung up on that. Isabella saved me. I owe her. I’m just helping out with Jenarth’s schooling. It’s not a big deal, yet you keep making it one.”
“Say whatever you want, Carter. But let me be clear – my patience is on a very short leash. Don’t push me, or you’ll regret it.” Her voice was cold as ice.
“You – ” Carter was about to explode, but Isabella quickly took his hand.
“Carter, just drop it. Victoria’s too upset to hear you out right now.” Isabella spoke softly, then glanced at Victoria with a wounded look. “Victoria, I know we don’t see eye to eye. If it’ll make you feel better, I’ll do whatever you ask.”
“How generous of you. You’ll do anything? Then go to hell!” Victoria wasn’t about to pull her punches with Isabella. If she thought she could act lofty in front of her, she’s got another think coming.
“Victoria, that’s enough!” Carter was even angrier now. He looked ready to step forward, but Isabella held him back.
“Carter, it’s fine, don’t kick up a fuss on my account. This is a school!” She turned to Tracy. “Mrs. Campbell, Jenarth has a weak immune system and an egg allergy. Please take good care of him.”
“Not a problem at all! We’ll take good care of him.” Tracy smiled and came over, taking Jenarth’s hand from Isabella.
“Hello, Mrs. Campbell!” Jenarth greeted her sweetly, making Tracy’s face light up.
“What a well-behaved child.”
Victoria watched the scene but didn’t pay it any mind. She turned to leave.
“Victoria! Wait!” Carter called after her again.
Victoria looked back, struggling to keep her temper in check.
“Since we ran into each other, let’s find a place to chat. We need to sit down and hash things out properly. I’m sick of every conversation turning into a shouting match. This can’t go on.” Carter stepped closer, his expression grim.
“Well, it is what it is. What’s there to talk about? There’s nothing left between us.” Victoria’s voice was firm. “I know you’re a busy man, Mr. Myers. Go spend time with your precious lover and your son.”
“Victoria, what’s wrong with you? You’re being completely unreasonable.” Carter stared at her, disbelief in his eyes.
“Carter, if Victoria doesn’t want to talk, don’t force her.” Isabella stepped up and took his hand again. “She probably has to get to work! Or maybe… she’s out looking for a job?”
Carter finally noticed Victoria’s professional outfit. He recalled Donald mentioning that Victoria had been applying for designer positions all over the place. Dressed like that, she must be busy hunting for a job.
So that’s why she was in such a hurry – she didn’t even have time to talk to him.
“Look at you now, Victoria. Ever since you left the Myers family, you’ve lost that fancy lifestyle.” Carter’s tone was cold. “Having second thoughts about the divorce?”
When he said “divorce,” Tracy sighed quietly, her face showing understanding.
“So you’re divorced, Mrs. Myers!” Tracy looked at Victoria with a helpless expression.
“That’s right – I’m divorced. I’ve got nothing to do with the Myers family anymore. Robert’s changing his last name to Lewis. Please keep that in mind, Mrs. Campbell – don’t mix it up next time.” Victoria finished, then shot Carter a withering look. “I’ve said it before – the only thing I regret is marrying a fool like Carter.”
With that, Victoria walked off without a backward glance. Even as Carter’s angry shouts followed her, she paid no attention.
Victoria got into her car, and her red sports car sped away with a clean, swift drift.
Carter stood on the sidewalk, watching Victoria’s sports car disappear down the street. He’d seen that car before – parked right outside the courthouse. So she really bought it for herself.
One hundred eighty million dollars…That kind of money could last her a long time.
Once she runs through it all, I’ll see how fast she comes crawling back to me for cash.
Just wait, Victoria. When that day comes, I’ll make you apologize and admit that all of this is your fault.
“Carter, let’s get Jenarth registered,” Isabella said, pulling him out of his thoughts.
He nodded quietly.
They walked into the school and filled out the forms. To keep things simple, Carter asked if Jenarth could join Robert’s class. He told the teacher it might help both boys settle in.
“Hey Robert, I think I just saw your dad – but he was with some new kid. Isn’t that weird?” A girl with hair tied in two buns leaned closer to Robert, her eyes curious.
“He’s not my dad,” Robert said without looking up. He kept his focus on the lump of clay in his hands. “My last name’s Lewis. His is Myers. We don’t even share a last name.”
“Wait, your last name is Lewis now? Since when? How come I didn’t know?” She tilted her head. “So who is your dad? Do I know him?”
“When I find him, you’ll be the first to know,” Robert said, shaping the clay faster.
“Okay, but you have to tell me as soon as you know! I’ll be so happy for you.” She giggled. “You’re the coolest, Robert.”
“I know I’m cool. Don’t have a crush on me,” Robert said with a grin, handing her a small clay flower.
“Wow! Robert, you’re amazing!” She took the flower and gave him a quick hug.
Robert’s cheeks flushed pink, but he played it cool. “I told you not to have a crush on me.”
Just then, Jenarth walked into the room with the teacher. The first thing he noticed was the girl with the buns standing close to Robert, gazing at him like he was a star.
The moment Jenarth’s eyes landed on Robert, they turned cold.
“Boys and girls, settle down,” the teacher said. “This is Jenarth Myers. He’s new here.”
Jenarth stepped forward, gave a small bow, and spoke clearly. “Hi, I’m Jenarth Myers. You can just call me Jenarth. I’m really happy to be here and make new friends.”
“Hi, Jenarth!”
“Welcome!”
The room buzzed with cheerful voices.
