Filed to story: The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion
She had a good sleep that night, perhaps thanks to Eustace’s cocktail juice. She usually would struggle to sleep well in an unfamiliar place, so the good sleep came as a surprise.
At first, she thought Eustace was bluffing when he mentioned how his cocktail would help with sleep, but his words turned out to be true.
The doorbell rang, interrupting her thoughts, and she scrambled to get out of bed without washing up.She was embarrassed to see Eustace, all dressed up, at her door.
Get Rid of Them All
“Did you just wake up?” Eustace asked with a smile, breakfast in hand.
Danika nodded and moved to the side to make room for him.He entered her living room and placed the breakfast on the dining table.
“Do you want to wash up first?”
“Alright.”
She returned to her senses and rushed toward the bathroom.
Eustace watched on with a huge grin.He could tell that Danika had a girly side despite putting up a cold and independent front.
However, she’d only show her true side in front of people she trusted. He believed that his hard work had resulted in progress because Danika never behaved in that way in front of him before.
This proved that she trusted him to some extent.
It was good news, but he still had work to do to win her heart.
After washing up and changing out of her pajamas, she joined him in the living room, the blush still lingering on her cheeks from the embarrassment.
She casually asked him, “Why are you up this early?”
“It’s not too early. It’s a habit of mine.”
He always woke up early in the morning.
Sleeping in was not his habit at all.
Danika woke up at an average time in the morning, but it was late when compared to Eustace’s.
“Let’s have breakfast.”
He pointed at the food on the table.
“You don’t have to go to the hospital today because it’s Saturday.Right?”
“Yeah. But I need to visit my patient.”
She could have stayed home, but she developed the habit of doing a morning round at the hospital, especially checking in on the patients scheduled for surgery on Monday. She wanted to keep an eye on them to prevent any complications.
Eustace felt bad for her because she was working too hard.
“Do you plan to keep working as a doctor?”
“Yes.Isn’t it nice?”
She liked her stable job.Her hours could be quite long and hectic, but it was comparatively more stable than Eustace’s.
“Those who inherited a family business would have sat back and enjoyed the wealth. But look at you— those who didn’t know might think you’re just another doctor.”
He smiled gently at her.
She stuck to a routine and did not practice excessive spending.
One wouldn’t know that she was rich. She didn’t refute his remark and explained, “If I sit back and enjoy life at a young age, I’d feel useless. There’s no sense of accomplishment from doing so.”
It would be wrong to say that she wanted nothing out of her job—perhaps, she was after the feeling of accomplishment from treating her patients.
“Yeah, my Danika is different from the others.”
He beamed at her.
She rolled her eyes, thinking, “‘My Danika’? Don’t be delusional.”
After breakfast, he sent Danika to the hospital before starting his busy workday at the Quincey Group.
Compared to her day, his work life was irregular and extremely hectic.
He always hoped that he could settle the issues within the Quinceys to make more time for her.
Alas, things didn’t always go according to his wishes.
Meanwhile, Zeke Quincey was at the Quincey Manor, looking like he’d aged a lot, perhaps from dealing with all the family strife or grieving Xavier’s passing.
“Grandpa, I have found the list of servants and bodyguards from the residence who had contact with the other families, ” Luke Quincey said, astounded by the extent to which their residence staff was bought off by external forces.
Thankfully, none of them made any move.
Those who had the guts to do so would have paid with their lives.
Instead of taking the list from Luke, Zeke merely sighed, “Get rid of them all.”
“Yes, Grandpa.” Luke nodded, thinking that those on the list deserved their fates.
I’ll Deal with Him on My Own
“Grandpa, did the Watkins really kill Dad?”
Luke was doubtful about the theory.
Even though the Quinceys didn’t interact much with the Watkins, the two families had no major conflict with each other either.
Logically, the Watkins wouldn’t have committed the heinous act.
However, he poured over the information that Eustace provided him with and ran his investigation. It was confirmed that the Watkins had been in contact with the two assassins, who likely died at the Watkins’ hands as well.
Despite the solid evidence, he still felt that something was off.
Zeke lifted his gaze but didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked, “What do you think?”
“All evidence pointed to the Watkins, but I still think it’s strange.”
However, Luke couldn’t quite pinpoint the reason for his doubt.
Zeke chuckled softly and looked away as he said coldly, “Of course, it’s strange because the Watkins family isn’t behind the murder.”
“They didn’t do it? But the evidence…”
“The evidence merely proved that the Watkins had been in contact with the two assassins. But who could be sure that they were the masterminds?” Zeke explained.
Luke furrowed his brows, looking confused.
“If the Watkins weren’t behind the murder, why did they get into contact with the assassins? They even asked the assassins to frame Eustace, so they were obviously guilty.”
‘My guess is that the Watkins took the risk and contacted the assassins because they wanted to take advantage of the situation and frame Eustace.”
Zeke, experienced with the workings of the real world, harbored a guess too.
Indeed, he had accurately explained the plan the Watkins had in mind.
Luke was surprised, followed by confusion.
“If the Watkins weren’t the mastermind, that would leave Eustace as the main suspect.Had the Watkins not gotten involved, we could have investigated Eustace. But now…”
“Hmph, that’s why I think the Watkin Family is useless.”
Zeke scoffed at how the Watkins failed to think logically and wondered how that family managed to keep their place as one of the Ten Elites.
In all honesty, the Watkins were not to be blamed.
They had no idea Zeke was planning to get rid of Eustace.
In their eyes, they suspected that Yakov was behind Xavier’s death.
After all, the two brothers were the main competitors in the race to be the family heir.
Everyone understood that it was impossible for Zeke to hand the Quinceys to Eustace unless he was out of his mind.
Still, the Watkins, worried that Zeke wouldn’t investigate further into Xavier’s death, decided to take the risk and frame Eustace.
Unfortunately, the move backfired.
“What do we do now? We can’t just let it slip, right?”
Luke trembled in anger when he was reminded of the fact that Eustace had killed his father.
As a Quincey, he never encountered a grievance as such.
Zeke snickered.
