She was taken aback.

“Since when did you two become best friends? She’d only requested Alfred to hunt for accommodation not long ago, and without wasting time, he went and told Eustace all about it.That was speedy.

“We’re not.We’re just acquaintances.”

He certainly didn’t think he was close with Alfred—they’d probably never be.She refused to accept his explanation.

“Why would he reveal everything to you if you’re just acquaintances?”

As Alfred’s boss, she believed Alfred wasn’t the type to leak her whereabouts to a mere acquaintance.

What a Great Employee

Eustace spent some time cooking up a reply.

A while later, Danika heard him muttering, “Well, we’re just acquaintances. You know what happened between me and him.We would never be close.”

Even though Mortimer was in a coma at the hospital, and there appeared to be no conflict between Eustace and Alfred, they knew that they would never be true friends, considering the bad blood between them.

“Right. So why did he tell you?”

Danika asked, feeling confused.

“He probably…doesn’t want to see you dating Evan Clarke.”

Eustace was surprised too when he received the tip from Alfred, but he thanked the man and didn’t prod much.

She was speechless at Eustace’s answer, but she couldn’t deny the possibility of Alfred doing so.

If Alfred was getting along fine with Eustace, it made sense that he would rather see Danika dating his half- brother than Evan Clarke. She stopped asking questions and took the elevator to her place. She had hired a cleaner to clean up the unit the day before.

The apartment was ready for her to move in, and she wanted to stay straight away.

“You should go home.”

She had to urge him to leave when he followed her to her door.He smiled and opened the door to the unit across from her.

Dumbfounded, she finally collected herself after a pause.

“Do you live here?”

“Yeah.”

He nodded and added, “Isn’t this fate? We’re neighbors again.”

Fate? Danika was too surprised to speak.

He had clearly bought the unit right after learning that she had moved to the apartment. She thought, “Does he take me as a fool?”

“Do you want to have a seat?” he invited her to his place, even though she refused to host him at hers.

She waved her hand dismissively.

“It’s okay.I’ll go to your place next time.”

She figured that his place was not much different from hers.

After all, both of them recently bought their units, which she assumed to have come with old furnishing from the former owners.

“Come in and have a seat.I’ll make you a cocktail for a good night’s sleep.”

He opened the door while speaking.

Finally, she succumbed to the allure and stepped into his place.

She was mostly curious about Eustace’s cocktails because she never knew that he was good at mixing drinks on top of being a good cook.

When she entered his living room, she was surprised by the huge contrast in its interior decor.

The living room sported a contemporary luxury decor, looking deluxe and nothing like a second-hand purchase.

The decor was clearly to Eustace’s taste, which puzzled her even more.

She wondered, ‘How did he manage to purchase a unit overnight that perfectly fits his taste? Why wasn’t I as lucky?”

While thinking, she saw him walking toward the bar in his place and starting to make some cocktails.

The bar was filled with ingredients for mixing drinks—it seemed he was regularly making cocktails and not just for that night.

“Today wasn’t your first day here,” she concluded.

He nodded.

“Yeah.I’ve moved in for a while. That’s why I said we were fated.”

He hired an interior designer to work on the decor, which explained why his unit looked different than Danika’s.

“I don’t now about fate. What I do know is that Alfred is indeed a great employee,” she scoffed sarcastically and suspected Alfred of choosing the apartment for her with an ulterior motive.

She had mistakenly thought that Eustace bought a unit after she moved over, but it seemed like it was the other way around—Alfred picked the place for her because Eustace lived there.

Are You Still in Contact with Her?

Sensing her rage, Eustace burst out in laughter and handed Danika a glass of cocktail.

“Try this.”

She accepted it and took a sip.

Then, she complimented his skills, “It’s nice. But the alcohol isn’t too strong. It tastes like juice instead.”

“Yeah, it’s not good to overdrink.”

He deliberately added only a little alcohol into her cocktail so as to not affect her sleep.

Danika looked amused but said nothing as she slowly sipped on the drink Eustace made himself a cocktail and asked, “Has Zellweger Inc told you about the charity fund?”

His staff had visited Zellweger Inc on the matter, but he was unsure if Danika was briefed on the progress.

“Yes, they told me about it.” She nodded.

“How’s the girl’s mother doing? She’s able to undergo surgery without worries, right?” he asked, but his only goal was to learn more about Danika.

Truth be told, he was not interested in the others.

“Yes.We have scheduled the surgery, and I’ll be her surgeon,” she added.

He glanced at her and noticed no worried look, which showed that she was confident.

He said, “Well, the surgery will go well if you’re on the case. You handled Faye Lawrence’s tough case excellently, so I believe in your capability.”

“Speaking of Faye, are you still in contact with her?” she asked.

He paused before regretting bringing up Faye—he was digging his own grave. Danika, however, seemed to read his mind and chuckled.

“Don’t worry. I don’t mean to interrogate you. I was asking about her health.”

Although the surgery was a success, there was a chance of relapse.

Therefore, she casually asked him about Faye’s progress.

He let out a relieved sigh and answered, “I’d contact her once ina while. She’s doing fine studying abroad. She finds the environment more suitable for her.”

Even though he was totally disappointed with Faye after all her wrongdoings, he had to protect her, considering that Anthony had saved his life.

That was the reason he sent Faye abroad.

“Cool.” Danika said nothing more.

Although she disliked Faye, she couldn’t be bothered to hold a grudge as long as Faye didn’t give her more trouble.

Danika didn’t stay long at Eustace’s place.

After downing the juice-like cocktail, she excused herself.

He didn’t object and sent her to the door.

After confirming that she had returned to her own place, he closed the door of his unit.

However, instead of going to bed, he went to work in his study like a tireless robot.

His life consisted of only two things—Danika and…work.

Back at home, Danika stared blankly at her unfamiliar bedroom.

Soon, she gathered herself and quickly tidied up the place.

Then, she went to the bathroom to shower and then lay comfortably on her bed.
