Chapter 381 – The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion

He looked exhausted. He looked at Eustace angrily. “I think you should have told Danika everything from the start.”

“What’s up? Are the Quinceys pressing close?” Eustace asked.

Evan had personally participated in Xavier’s murder. Eustace knew that. Evan was also the one who planned the escape route. As long as they escaped before the Quinceys could react, there wouldn’t be an issue.

But judging by his response right now, it probably hadn’t worked.

Evan sat on the chair, his spirits low. “I underestimated them. They were fast. Before my men could clear the area, the Quinceys had already cordoned off every exit. They can’t leave through the proper channels now.”

Although they were masked and gloved when they broke in and did not leave any traces, Evan did not want to risk his men getting caught. They followed him into the country. He wanted to see them leave in peace.

I Don’t Need You To Say It

Eustace glanced at him and said, ‘Since they can’t take the proper routes, you’ll just have to let them go along the borders. This shouldn’t be a hard task for you.”

“I don’t need you to say it.” Evan glared at him. “I already did, but I’m worried that the Quinceys have already prepared for that.”

“No matter how strong they are, they cannot place guards at every border. If you let your men leave one by one, the rates of success are high,” Eustace said.

Unfortunately, his words received no praise. “Do you think this is a vacation? It was hard enough for them to travel in a group. If they split up, they’d have no chance of crossing the borders.”

The borders that they talked about were not legal routes to take. They were basically sneaking over to the other country. It was extremely risky. Evan had prepared for them to use a path they had used before. However, he was still worried for them.

“I didn’t know you were so sentimental towards your henchmen. I thought you were the type to assassinate them all afterward,” Eustace teased.

Evan looked pained. “You’ve watched too many movies. They’re my men. I don’t want anything to happen to them.”

“Alright, alright. You have to be careful. I can’t help you.” Eustace didn’t have much support in this aspect. Paul may have a little, but Eustace didn’t want to involve him.

Evan didn’t want him to help, either. He was just upset with his attitude.” Aren’t you afraid my men will fail to escape and rat you out?”

“Someone has to believe them in the first place.” Eustace smiled. He didn’t worry about that at all.

Evan smirked. ‘It seems like I’ve been fooled by you.”

“How can this be fooling you? You didn’t want Luke to bother Danika. Look, he doesn’t have any time to do that now. Isn’t that a job well done?’ Eustace said.

Evan was at a loss for words. Why did that sound so weird?

They no longer talked about it. Evan asked, “Have you told Danika everything?”

“Yes,’ Eustace said.

“And I…”

“Don’t worry. I did not mention you at all,” Eustace reassured him. He was trustworthy, at Least.

Evan sighed. But at the same time, he didn’t think that this was the way to go. Was he going to be controlled by Eustace for the rest of his life?

As if reading his mind, Eustace smiled at him. “Don’t worry. I won’t come to you for help if anything happens.”

“So you’re not planning on finding me anymore?” Evan asked. “If anything happens,’ isn’t just an excuse?”

“Well, I don’t have any useful henchmen, and your men are untraceable. It’s best if they did the dirty work.” Although Eustace wasn’t quite sure who his next target would be, he had to inform Evan beforehand.

His words angered Evan. “Do you think I’m going to let you threaten me forever? It’d be easier for me to finish you off.”

He had gotten up from the chair. Right now, the contrast between him and Eustace was clear as day and night.

“Don’t you say that. It’s just a cooperation. We both won in the end. If not, you can state your price, and I’ll give you the money. You were already involved in these matters anyway.’ He did not mean to mock Evan. It was simply the truth to him.

Assassins traded their lives for money.

Are You Willing To Help Me

Evan suddenly filled with the urge to punch him. He could work just for money, but if Eustace used Danika against him, Evan would never work for him.

“You’d better pray that you’re this lucky every time!” With that, Evan left. He didn’t want to linger around Eustace any longer.

Eustace didn’t mind. He did not feel the slightest twinge of remorse. Evan acted like this was a big loss, but Eustace knew very well that he was not a saint. If he were, he would not be in his position.

Even after a few days, Eustace remained in the hospital. His wounds were already pretty much healed. If he were in another hospital, he would have fought to get out.

However, this was Bardoff Hospital. As long as he stayed, he would be able to see Danika every day. Naturally, he would not wish to be discharged.

On top of that, he was waiting. Waiting for the Quinceys to come. Xavier was done and buried. Eustace had not returned home. The Quinceys had not sent anyone over to check on him as if he had not existed. However, Eustace knew that it was just a facade. They would come sooner or later.

The door was pushed open. Eustace raised an eyebrow. Speak of the devil.

“How are you doing, Eustace?” It was Zeke. Other people would think that he cared about Eustace. But Eustace knew that Zeke was not there to see him. He couldn’t care less about how Eustace was doing.

Eustace didn’t express any of his thoughts. He pretended to be surprised. “Why are you here, Grandpa?’

“I have been busy with some other things lately. I didn’t have the time. You won’t blame me for that, will you?” He smiled, looking like the perfect, unsuspecting grandfather. Eustace said he didn’t. But in his heart, he cursed at Zeke.

“You probably know of your uncle’s passing, don’t you?’ Zeke said, sighing in exasperation.

Eustace nodded. “Yeah, I’ve heard. I wanted to attend the funeral, but the doctors said I wasn’t fit enough to leave the hospital.”

But even if he were fine, he would have thought of another excuse. Attending Xavier’s funeral? He wasn’t as kind as that.

“He’s already gone now. It doesn’t matter anymore,” Zeke said. His gaze was concentrated on Eustace. Unfortunately, Eustace was sly. He was a good actor, revealing nothing on his face.

Zeke retracted his gaze and smiled bitterly. ‘This is the first time that the Quinceys have been hit so hard by the tragedy. I feel horrible. I just wish I could catch the murderer and destroy him. But my powers are limited. I have still been unable to find the killer. Eustace, are you willing to help me with this?”

He looked at Eustace, not giving him a chance to refuse.

Eustace could feel it. If he refused, Zeke could kill him on the spot even if the other families used it against him.

Eustace had no choice but to nod. “Of course.”

I’ll Be Waiting

Zeke smiled knowingly. “I will be waiting for your good news, Eustace.” “However, it’s been so long. I’m afraid I won’t be able to find anything out,’ Eustace said. He felt that Zeke was giving him this impossible task on purpose, so he would have a reason to attack him later.

As if prepared for his answer, Zeke said, “Don’t worry. I already caught two of the killers. I’ll let you be the interrogator. You can’t let me down!”

In truth, he had already interrogated them. Finding nothing, he had gone to see Eustace. He felt it had something to do with Eustace, and those two killers would get upset when they saw him. If Eustace were the one to interrogate them, they’d be unable to deal with the betrayal and blabber about everything.

Eustace could guess most of what Zeke was thinking.

It was a pity that Evan’s henchmen had never seen Eustace before. They had no idea why they had to kill Xavier. Even if he were the one to interrogate them, nothing would be found.

After Zeke left, Eustace called Evan to ask why his men were caught.

Evan was stressing over it. He had indeed underestimated the power of the Quinceys.

He didn’t expect them to have people situated at the borders. His men were ambushed and hurt badly. Only a few escaped, and two were taken as hostages.

“I don’t care what you do, Eustace. You have to get them back, or I will tell the Quinceys that this was all your idea.” Evan was infuriated. How would his henchmen work for him if he failed to rescue the two of them?

Eustace laughed. “Don’t be so naive, Evan. Do you think they’d leave the Quinceys ‘ house alive? You should focus on lessening their suffering and let them leave as soon as possible.” Of course, what Eustace meant by leaving was letting them leave this world, not the Quinceys.

Evan was quiet. He knew that, too, but it infuriated him very much.

After a while, Evan sighed. “They were helping you, Eustace. Let them go happily..”

“Alright,” Eustace agreed. He had called Evan just to hear that from him.

Although he would have done it anyway without his permission, Eustace had to avoid Evan using it against him in the future.

He hung up and got down from his bed, packing his things. He couldn’t stay in the room any longer.

When Danika came back, Eustace had already packed up his belongings. She was stunned but reacted quickly. “Do you want to be discharged now?”

“Yes.” He nodded. He looked at her. “Let’s have lunch together. Think of it as a celebration.”

“Alright.” For once, Danika didn’t refuse. Eustace had survived death once more. It was worthy of a celebration.

She did not expect the celebration to take place in the hospital cafeteria, however.

Danika was speechless. “If you’re broke, you can ask me to treat you to something. You don’t have to lower yourself to the cafeteria.”

“I don’t mind at all. Whenever I ask you out, you say you’ve already eaten in the cafeteria. So I thought, maybe the food here is delicious. Why else would you always come here to eat? So, I’m here to try it out,” Eustace said.

Whatever You Say

Danika coughed, obviously awkward.

Eustace had indeed often asked her out during the time he was hospitalized, and she had always refused. She didn’t think he’d be talking about it now. Did he have to be so petty?

She said nothing else. They would eat in the cafeteria, then. The food there was honestly pretty good, at least to her. As for Eustace’s tastes, that was none of her business.

“I saw Zeke in the hospital this morning. He was here to see you, wasn’t he? ” Danika asked, curious.

Eustace nodded. “You say you don’t care about me, but you do, really. Haven’t you noticed?”

“What do you mean? Zeke was so noticeable. I would have seen him as long as I wasn’t blind.” On top of that, everyone in the hospital was talking about it. Even if she hadn’t seen him, she would have known.
