“I saw the mountains stand,
Silent, wonderful, and grand;
Looking out across the land,
When the golden light was falling,
On distant dome and spire…”
Sean nodded as if he understood, not daring to question her.
“Allison!”
The warmth in the voice made Alyssa’s heart blossom. She turned to find Elijah a distance away, being supported by Elias.
“Mr. Forrest,” she said gently, her eyes brimming with tears at the sight of her friend looking so ill. He had lost a lot of weight, his cheeks caving in on themselves.
Alyssa went up to hug Elijah, and he met her embrace as if she were his daughter.
“How have you been?” she asked.
“Never better! I’ve been eating heartily and sleeping just as soundly!” Elijah said with a grin.
Beside him, Elias looked away sadly.
Alyssa took a deep breath to settle her upset emotions. Being a doctor, she knew what someone with an illness like Elijah’s would go through on a daily basis-loss of appetite, weight loss, hair loss. Even the most resolute of individuals would discover their determination waning in such circumstances. Alyssa shot Sean a look, to which the man nodded. He had found the specialist she needed to treat Elijah.
“And who might this be, Allison?” Elijah turned to Sean.
“Oh! He-He’s my cousin.” Alyssa quickly made a white lie.
The park rangers were largely oblivious to how things were transpiring in Solana City, given their focus was on the park itself. Naturally, they had no idea of her identity as Alyssa Taylor.
“Your family has quite the genetics. Even your cousin appears to be a fine man!” Elias praised.
Sean blushed happily. He could accept that instead of “boyfriend”.
“The weather’s been peculiar of late, Allison. A storm might spring up on us when we least expect it,” Elijah said worriedly. “I’m truly glad you could pay me a visit today, but you don’t need to come up into the mountains with us.”
“I don’t mind. Did you forget? I got a community award for helping people up there before. They even called me a living Mountain Goddess!” Alyssa said proudly, thumping her chest.
“Hahaha! How blessed we are to have two great individuals in our midst!” Elijah chuckled fondly.
Alyssa cocked her head. “Oh? Is there someone else I should know about?”
“Yes! His name is Jeremy Walsh, from the Walsh Group!” Elias cried excitedly.
Alyssa and fellow “cousin” Sean shot one another a look. “What?”
“Mr. Walsh from the Walsh Group! Isn’t that amazing? What a surprise, right?”
Elias’ eyes were wide with admiration as he waxed on, “I only knew his true identity two years ago. You’d never expect a rich, refined man like him would be able to hike so well!
“When he went up the mountains with Mr. Forrest two years ago, he saved two hikers who got off the trail due to a thunderstorm. They were calling him the ‘Mountain God’ at that time!”
F
“This mountain’s only big enough for one god,” Alyssa grumbled to herself.
“What’s that, Allison?” Elijah asked.
“Oh, no, nothing. I’m just admiring Mr. Jeremy’s bravado, is all!” Alyssa forced a smile and a thumbs up.
“Yeah. He really is brave. He even comes by sometimes to join our hikes and donates occasionally too.”
Elijah bearned at the thought, adding, “I’d love for you two to meet. After all, both of you have made significant contributions to our park here, and both adore the hike. I’m sure you two would get along very
The corner of Alyssa’s lips twitched. “There’s no need for that, really!”
In the end, Sean was left behind while Alyssa went to the start of the trail with Elijah and Elias.
Alyssa remained distracted throughout their walk, the only thing on her mind being the memory from 13
years ago when Jeremy saved her from the pit she had landed in.
Like her, he’d revisited this park all these years.
Surprisingly, neither of them ever met one another during their visits.
Alyssa tightened her grip around her backpack, her lips thinning slightly.
It seemed like they really were never meant to be.
Any fate between them had run out in that incident 13 years ago, and everything else afterward was nothing but a figment of her fervent imagination.
They soon reached the foot of the mountain.
Just then, several park rangers ran over to them, yelling, “Mr. Forrest! We just got a signal for help from two hikers! One of their friends is still stuck on the mountain. We’re just about to go on a search!”
“Lead the way!” Elijah said gruffly.
Elias was concerned for him, however. “But sir, the weather might turn against us any minute, and you’re already…”
“Don’t worry about me, I’m fine!”
“Leave this to Elias and me, Mr. Forrest!” Alyssa cried. “I’ve volunteered as a medic in a warzone before. If this hiker is in any danger, I can come to their aid immediately!”
A look of shock and respect surfaced on Elias’ expression.
“Well… alright then.” Elijah nodded. He gave Alyssa’s hand a firm grab. “We’re counting on you, Allison!”
Jeremy drove into Crater Mountain Park on his own. He had swapped for a less-showy-looking SUV, so
Sean hadn’t noticed his arrival outside the park.
He soon parked the car and got out.
“Mr. Forrest? Is that you?” He called, dressed in camo for the hike. He looked just like some special ops team sergeant.
“Mr. Jeremy!” Elijah greeted him warmly at the entrance. “The weather is not on our side today. What brings you here out of your busy schedule?”
“It’s precisely because I’m only going to be busier that I decided to stop by. I won’t be able to for a long time.” Jeremy sighed. “But you can just call me Jeremy, sir. Like you used to.”
“That was when you were but an 18-year-old. I can’t keep calling you that now that you’re the head of your family business. What if you get upset and stop donating to our park?” Elijah said jokingly.
“I would never. I’ve already allocated a fund in my secretary’s name. If something happens to me, he’ll continue donating annually to the park on my behalf.”
Elijah didn’t expect this response. He quickly smacked Jeremy’s chest, saying, “Don’t talk like that! I was only joking around with you. You’re too serious for your own good.
*Ah… What a lucky day it is for me today. Both my favorite youngsters are here visiting me. How blessed!
am.”
Elijah teared up slightly after saying that. He knew his time would soon be up, so being able to witness a
“Do you have another visitor?” Jeremy asked lightly.
“I do, yes. I wanted to introduce her to you. You two are so alike, joining the patrol and helping hikers and donating to the park every year.”
Jeremy’s curiosity increased upon hearing that. “If they are important to you and share the same passions as I do, I wouldn’t mind getting to know them.”
“Too bad. Allison has joined the rest of the patrol!”
When “Allison” was mentioned, Jeremy was initially puzzled before the realization struck him.
Jeremy’s heart skipped violently as a surge of electricity swept through his being, sending him into a peculiar state of numbness and shock.
