Daniella’s eyes lit up. She practically sparkled as she circled the car. “Wow! This is amazing! My classmates are gonna be so jealous.”
Adrian chimed in, “That’s nothing. We’ll roll in together. Your car at the front, Boone’s bringing up the rear. Three-car convoy. You’ll be the talk of the entire university. Princess Dani, arriving in style.”
Daniella was already basking in the imaginary spotlight, picturing herself as the undisputed queen of Stonebridge University.
Abigail raised her cup to her lips and let out a soft, cold laugh.
Talk of the school? she thought. Let’s hope she doesn’t regret it when the spotlight burns.
The first day of term at Stonebridge University was buzzing with excitement. Students, parents, and faculty gathered in droves at the entrance, and the atmosphere crackled with new beginnings.
Just then, the roar of an engine split through the air.
Boone’s limited edition sports car came speeding toward the gates, drawing every eye on the road. Behind him, two more luxury cars followed – driven by Conrad and Adrian Heng. The thunder of engines had heads turning in waves.
In the passenger seat beside Boone, Daniella sat prim and proud, dressed to perfection. She basked in the admiring glances that followed them, like a peacock in full plumage.
The three vehicles rolled to a smooth stop. For a moment, the crowd was hushed – then a burst of murmurs and excited whispers spread like wildfire.
Boone stepped out first, crisp in a tailored suit, every inch the picture of charm and confidence. The Adrian brothers followed, tall and imposing. Just the sight of them flanked by luxury cars was enough to steal the spotlight.
And Boone, already a top-tier celebrity, ignited the crowd’s energy even more. Students began to shout his name, scrambling for photos and autographs.
Boone wore his pride like a second skin. He posed just right, smiling just enough, soaking in the adoration like it was his birthright.
Daniella emerged next, radiant and elegant. She stood beside her three “brothers,” reveling in the awe-struck reactions of her classmates.
Boone greeted everyone warmly, signing autographs and taking photos like a seasoned star.
Then he raised his voice slightly, clearing his throat. “Everyone, I’m not here today as a celebrity. I’m just a big brother – seeing off my dear sister Daniella as she starts this new chapter in her life.”
As he spoke, he slung an arm affectionately around Daniella’s shoulder and brought her forward. “She’s too kind for her own good, often taken advantage of. Please, help me look out for her.”
“You got it! From now on, she’s our sister too!” a senior student shouted back. Others quickly chimed in, promising to take care of her.
“Thank you all so much,” Boone said with a gracious smile.
A cluster of girls swarmed Daniella.
“Daniella, I can’t believe your brother’s a star! And he spoils you so much!”
“And your family is loaded. That car’s a limited edition, right? You’re living the dream!”
“Daniella, you’ve got to watch over us from now on!”
The compliments poured in, and Daniella was positively glowing.
But just as she soaked in all that glory…
A commotion rippled through the crowd.
A group of police officers stepped forward, their expressions cold and professional. The lead officer strode up to Boone without hesitation and held up a document.
“Boone, you are under investigation for reckless driving resulting in serious injury. You are hereby placed under arrest.”
The words cut through the buzz like a blade.
Gasps rang out. The crowd recoiled in shock.
Boone turned ghostly pale. His legs trembled. His voice shook with disbelief. “Th-this can’t be happening. You must be mistaken!”
Daniella froze. The joy on her face vanished, replaced by horror.
“No… no, you’re wrong! My brother’s a celebrity! He’d never – he wouldn’t do something like that!” she stammered, her voice cracking.
The Adrian brothers were equally stunned.
But Adrian, a practicing attorney, reacted swiftly. He stepped forward, placing himself between Boone and the police.
“I’m Adrian, a licensed lawyer,” he said coolly. “This is my brother. I will be representing him. Given the severity of this charge – reckless driving causing bodily harm – I expect to see solid, indisputable evidence. A person’s freedom and reputation are on the line. There can be no room for ambiguity.”
His tone was firm, his expression razor-sharp. The crowd fell silent, hanging on every word.
And Daniella? Her world, moments ago a sparkling stage, had collapsed around her in the blink of an eye. Heaven? No – this was hell in disguise.
The officer remained composed, voice calm yet firm. “Mr. Adrian, we have all the evidence – verified and legally cleared. If you have any concerns, you may address them through proper legal channels during the judicial process. For now, please allow us to proceed with our duty.”
Boone, still struggling, clung to Adrian Heng’s arm in panic. “Brother, you have to save me! Please!”
But it was no use.
The officers pulled him away and shoved him into the police car. The doors slammed shut, sealing Boone’s fate for all to see.
Daniella collapsed against the luxury car, covering her face with both hands as she broke into loud sobs.
Just moments ago, she’d been basking in glory. Now, the same crowd that once looked on with envy had turned cold – curious stares now twisted with mockery and disdain.
From the crowd, several students who had just asked Boone for autographs began tearing them up, disgust on their faces.
“Top star? He’s a menace to society. I actually looked up to him. I must’ve been blind.”
“Didn’t she say her brother was the greatest? What happened now, huh?”
“That whole ‘grand entrance’ earlier? What a joke. This family’s all show, no substance.”
Each jeering word was like a knife to Daniella’s ears. She clamped her hands tighter around her head, trying to block them out – but the words kept coming, like a cursed echo lodged in her skull.
And not far away, Abigail stood quietly outside the crowd, watching it all unfold.
Because the special admissions exam results were delayed this year, students like her had a postponed start date.
Jill finally broke through the crowd, sweating and breathless. “Abigail, I finally made it through. I’m dead tired.”
Right behind her came Cameron, dapper as ever. He brushed away the damp strands clinging to his forehead and offered a polite, helpless smile. “It’s way too crowded here.”
Jill flung an arm around Abigail’s shoulders, her face full of concern. “Abigail, you saw that, right?”
