After a while, Abigail finally caught her breath. Her voice was hoarse. “Rest for now. The medicine will take effect gradually. You might feel a little discomfort tonight, but it’s all within control.”
Lucas turned his head and frowned when he saw how exhausted she was. Despite his own weakness, he pushed himself up on his hands and slowly sat upright.
Lucas walked over and crouched beside Abigail, then gently scooped her up into his arms.
Her cheek pressed against his firm chest, their sweat mixing where their skin touched. She frowned in distaste. “I’m fine. Just completely drained. I just need to rest a little.”
Lucas looked down at her, noticing her discomfort, then carried her over to the small bed and laid her down carefully. “I’ll have Andrew prepare a bath for you. You’ll feel better after soaking.”
“Alright.” This time, Abigail didn’t argue – she really was exhausted.
Lucas turned and dressed, then made a call to Andrew. Remembering how weightless she’d felt in his arms, he added a request for some nutritional supplements as well.
Later, Abigail sank into the natural hot spring inside the villa, letting out a long sigh of relief. She hadn’t expected Lucas’s private home to come with a real geothermal spring.
The warm water wrapped around her aching limbs, slowly dissolving her tension and fatigue.
Just as she started to fully relax, she casually lifted her gaze – and spotted another figure through the mist, just beyond the edge of her pool.
A closer look revealed it was none other than Lucas.
Her eyes widened in shock.
“Don’t panic,” came Lucas’s voice from the other side. Calm. Gentle. “There’s a screen dividing the two pools. We can hear each other, but we can’t see through. You have my word – I can’t see you.”
Abigail frowned slightly. “I’m not panicking. But why didn’t you tell me beforehand?”
Leaning against the warm stone wall, Lucas gave a small wince and said awkwardly, “I forgot.”
Abigail was speechless at the answer. But knowing he was just on the other side didn’t dampen her mood in the slightest.
So what if a beautiful man was bathing naked nearby? She’d already seen every inch of him during treatment.
“Lalalala, lalalala!” she hummed cheerfully, stretching out in the water.
On the other side, Lucas heard her and shook his head helplessly. To him, she was still just a carefree little girl who didn’t know the weight of the world yet.
After his soak, Lucas changed and waited in the gazebo outside for Abigail to finish.
Soon, Andrew arrived from the side path, his steps brisk. Lowering his voice, he said, “Sir, Madam Aubrey took more than a dozen bodyguards to Sand Island. She wants to take Mason away.”
At those words, Lucas’s expression darkened instantly. A flash of emotion flickered in his eyes – so brief it was nearly invisible, but unmistakably bitter.
He fell silent for a long while. When he finally spoke, his voice was cold and steady as steel. “What else did she do?”
Sand Island was his private territory, entirely under his control. A dozen bodyguards couldn’t even find the gate, let alone get close to Mason. If Andrew had come all this way to report it in person, she must have done something more extreme.
Andrew hesitated before lowering his voice further. “Madam… held a dagger to her own throat. Said if we didn’t hand Mason over, she’d spill her blood on the spot. The men on the island didn’t dare act. We had no choice but to report to you first.”
In truth, Madam Aubrey had said much worse – things Andrew couldn’t bring himself to repeat, afraid of hurting Lucas even more.
Lucas’s gaze turned glacial. The temperature around him seemed to drop with it. His fists clenched tightly, veins bulging under his skin. Anger surged inside him like a rising tide – hot, cold, violent.
And buried beneath that fury… was a sorrow too heavy to speak.
His own mother, again and again, raising a blade for the sake of a foster son. And turning it – every single time – on him.
“Let them take him.”
Lucas’s voice was low, drained of strength, the exhaustion in it unlike anything Andrew had heard before.
“…Yes, sir.” Andrew gave him a long, complex look before silently turning to leave.
The sound of footsteps came from inside. Lucas looked up instinctively – Abigail had finished her soak and was walking out.
Their eyes met. In that brief moment, Abigail caught something – an unmistakable flicker of pain in Lucas’s eyes.
But it vanished almost instantly. His expression returned to its usual calm, unreadable as ever, as if what she saw had been nothing more than her imagination.
“How was it?” Lucas asked in a casual tone, his voice calm and smooth. “Benjamin told me this spring has healing properties. That’s why I bought the land and built the villa here.”
Abigail shifted her gaze away from his face and responded lightly, “It was nice. Your friend was right – this spring really does have restorative effects. You should use it more often yourself.”
Lucas nodded gently, lips curving into a faint smile. “Alright.”
His eyes drifted past her, toward the distant sea, a barely visible emptiness hidden behind them.
Just when Abigail thought the conversation was over, Lucas quietly added, “I’m sorry. Mason was taken.”
Abigail’s brows furrowed. Someone actually managed to take Mason from Lucas’s grasp?
“But don’t worry,” Lucas said. “I won’t let him get another chance to hurt you.”
He knew Mason’s vengeful nature too well. Now that Abigail had ruined him, Mason would stop at nothing to retaliate.
But Abigail didn’t seem the least bit worried. “If he has the guts to come, I’ll make sure he doesn’t leave.”
Lucas didn’t know the full extent of Abigail’s capabilities, but he knew enough to be sure she wasn’t just bluffing. Still, she was young – too young to understand how vicious some people could be when driven to desperation.
She may not worry, he thought. But I have to.
When Abigail returned home, she caught sight of Boone’s flashy new sports car pulling into the driveway.
He climbed out with a flourish, immediately spotting her and letting out a mocking snort. “What are you staring at, bumpkin? You’ll never drive anything like this in your life.”
He deliberately strolled past her, fingers tapping rhythmically on the car’s sleek body as he bragged, “Top-tier specs. Limited edition. Even money can’t buy it now.”
Abigail didn’t even bother responding. The irritation in her eyes was brief – then she turned away.
So Boone still had the energy to show off a new car. He really thought the online scandal had blown over.
Well… his car had been totaled in that hit-and-run. Of course he’d need a replacement.
Abigail stood on the second-floor balcony, sipping tea as she watched the scene unfold below. Daniella and Adrian were circling Boone’s new ride, wide-eyed with excitement.
“Dani, I’ll drive you to school on the first day,” Boone grinned proudly. “Everyone will be watching.”
