Newton went on, saying, “I’m sure this wife of yours can give you all the opinions you need to hear.
Haven’t you relied on her all these years?”
Sophia forced a smile, even though her chest was filled with hatred.
She despised this time of the month. Newton always had his way of pushing her buttons or digging a thorn in her side. It got so bad that she would get insomnia in anticipation of the monthly dinner.
She wondered when Newton would die.
Javier cleared his throat, clasping Sophia’s hand under the table. “Betty’s a young woman now, Dad. I think it’s time we consider her marriage prospects.”
Betty blushed furiously in response.
Newton paused in his eating. “Marriage? Betty is only 25 years old. Why are you trying to marry her off so badly? I still want her and Lauren to be by my side for at least ten more years. What the hell are you in a rush for?”
Javier pursed his lips. He didn’t know what to say.
“The girls are beautiful and will no doubt stay so even until they’re 52. They will still have their fair share of suitors then!”
Newton suddenly narrowed his eyes. “You’re not trying to form a marriage alliance, are you? The company isn’t having an emergency, is it?”
“What? No, of course not, Dad,” Sophia hurriedly said.
“I’m telling you now, Javier Walsh, don’t you force my granddaughters into an arranged marriage even if it means the company is to go bankrupt tomorrow. Understood?” Newton ordered sternly.
“You’re overthinking, Grandpa.” Betty tugged on his arm, shaking her head. “Mom and Dad are just helping me out. It’s nothing to do with the business. I’m the one who wants to marry.”
“You?” Newton asked incredulously.
Betty nodded. A shy smile graced her face.
Newton couldn’t help but wonder where the time had gone. His granddaughter was all grown up.
“You misunderstood Javier, Dad. We’re only supporting Betty’s wishes. She already has someone in mind,
“Sophia said, grinning.
“Oh? Who then?”
“Landon, Dad,” Javier said. “The Harper boy. You’ve known him since he was a kid.”
Jeremy remained silent as he ate, though a note of apprehension appeared in his eyes.
“Landon? Landon Harper?”
“Yes, Dad,” Sophia affirmed.
A loud clang suddenly interrupted the conversation. All eyes fell on Lauren, whose silverware had dropped onto the floor.
That was considered extremely rude in a household where manner and etiquette were everything.
“I-I’m so sorry!” Lauren cried, bending down to pick the cutlery up. However, Jeremy beat her to it.
“It’s alright. I’ll get you a new set,” he said kindly.
“Thank you. Thank you, Jeremy, Lauren murmured meekly.
Betty watched her sister, who had grown pale and stark, and grinned evilly.
“Watch your manners, Lauren! We’re having dinner with Grandpa here!” Sophia quipped.
“Alright, alright. That’s enough. It’s just a fork. No reason to get upset at the girl,” Newton retorted. Lauren was his favorite granddaughter, after all.
Sophia clenched her fists angrily under the table. Everything she did was wrong in the eyes of this old man!
“Grandpa, Mom, Dad… I’m done with my meal,” Lauren said softly, then hurriedly left the table.
Jeremy’s eyes narrowed as he watched his sister leave, and certain thoughts appeared in his mind.
Betty’s gleeful mood had increased double fold.
She thought that Lauren didn’t have to endure such a situation. Lauren could have remained the family’s insignificant, almost invisible member for the rest of her life.
Regrettably, Lauren had chosen to attempt to seduce her man. That was why she felt the need to teach
Lauren a lesson and assert her dominance in the situation.
‘But why Landon?” Newton asked with a frown. “Didn’t he like Allison?”
Javier, Sophia, and Betty’s face turned an ugly shade of red.
Jeremy coughed violently, having been drinking some water. His grip on the glass tightened.
“What are you saying, Grandpa? Why would Landon like Alyssa?” Betty huffed, her face reddened with anger.
“Of course he does. I may be 80, but my eyes and ears still function properly. I saw how devoted Landon was to Allison. He couldn’t keep his eyes or attention off of her during my birthday celebration. He’s a smart, keen boy, that one.”
Newton then glanced at Jeremy. “I even thought of marrying Allison to him at the time. They’d make the perfect pair. Plus, Landon would treat her like a queen, unlike some. She’d definitely have a happy married.
life ahead of her then.”
Upon learning that Alyssa would spend the rest of her life happily with Landon, Jeremy felt incredulous.
Jeremy’s grip on his glass was slowly weakening, almost imperceptibly. He couldn’t help but sense that Newton was indirectly chastising him.
But Jeremy couldn’t bear the thought of Landon marrying Alyssa. The man who lost his virginity at 16 and
“Am I still your granddaughter, Grandpa?” Betty cried. “I’m the one who likes Landon Harper right now, not Alyssa! Shouldn’t you be helping me instead? Why would you want to match him to Alyssa Taylor?”
“Does Landon feel the same way about you?” Newton asked.
“That… I…” Betty was stumped.
“I saw how he treated you the night of my birthday. You two didn’t even exchange a single word. He doesn’t care for you at all.”
Betty gritted her teeth, unable to retort because she knew Newton was right.
Newton advised, “Just because you wouldn’t be forced into an arranged marriage doesn’t mean that you should force something that isn’t there. You’ll only end up wasting your time and embarrassing yourself.
Newton shook his head and continued, “Your personalities don’t match, either. With Landon’s temper, you two wouldn’t have a day of peace.”
Grandpa!” Betty whined, nearly crying in desperation.
*Don’t go asking Betty that, Dad.” Javier stepped in to help his daughter. “Women tend to be shy.
“It’s not like Landon has no feelings for Betty, either. He came by the other day just to talk to Betty. Sophia and I both saw it with our own eyes.”
Betty’s heart clenched, recalling how Landon had spoken to her that day. Tears pooled in her eyes.
So what if Landon hated her guts?
As long as she married him and became his wife, she was sure he’d eventually fall in love with her after spending time together!
“Oh?” Newton responded curiously, stroking his chin.
“Yeah, Dad,” Sophia piped up, “When has someone like Landon ever personally gone to see another woman?
“He clearly has Betty in his thoughts. He wouldn’t have come by otherwise. Plus, Alyssa already has someone else.” 1
Jeremy slowly turned his eyes to Sophia. He swallowed anxiously, as if trying to control a turbulent emotion.
Newton was surprised to hear this. “Allison has a boyfriend? Who is it?”
“Victor Schmidt’s youngest, Jameson.” Sophia had gotten word of this from Liana herself. Even though there wasn’t much evidence that the two were dating, she might as well bring this up to stop the old man from interfering with their plans.
“Alyssa is not dating Jameson Schmidt,” Jeremy finally spoke up, setting down his cutlery.
