Filed to story: Watch Me Win Alpha (Olivia & Ethan)

Her mother was sitting by her side, holding her hand. She attempted to calm her daughter down and quiet her. She had been released from jail on bail this morning. Madeline was terrified that someone would hear Chloe’s threats and then both of them would be thrown into jail.

Chloe eventually calmed down enough to ask where Ethan was. “Why isn’t he by my bedside?” she demanded.

Her mother squeezed her hand. “He was just here, but he had to leave right before you woke up,” she lied.

This seemed to pacify Chloe for now.

Then, a nurse walked into the room. “The police are here to question Chloe,” she said.

Mrs. Windsor’s stomach stiffened with fear. “Turn them away if you can,” she answered. “Tell them that my daughter hasn’t recovered enough to be questioned.” Once the nurse was gone, she leaned toward her daughter and began to speak in a quiet and quick voice. “The boy’s body was not found on our property. Deny everything. I’ve taken care of the rest.”

Chloe’s tense posture relaxed, but then her eyes darkened. “I’m going to get Kelly back if it’s the last thing I do,” she vowed. “That bitch almost killed me.” A wicked smile crossed her face, which chilled her mother to the bone. “But you know who I’m planning on getting revenge on even more than Kelly?”

“W-who?” Madeline said as apprehension bubbled in her empty stomach.

“Olivia.” Chloe said her name like a curse word. “I know that she is still trying to steal Ethan from me. I can feel it. I can’t believe that she had followed us to Luceland. She’s even more of a crazy bitch than Kelly is.”

Mrs. Windsor frowned. “Stop trying to mess with Olivia. She has the protection of Alexander Green for whatever reason. The Green’s are even more powerful than our family. And Olivia is clever unlike Kelly.”

“But how was Olivia able to set up an ambush? Why was Ethan even in Luceland?” Chloe questioned as a suspicious look crossed her face.

“Are you implying that Olivia and Ethan could be working together?” Madeline asked.

Before Chloe could answer, her brother Felix entered the hospital room. Mrs. Windsor looked at her son with fear in her eyes. She hadn’t expected him to be here.

“Felix, what are you doing here?” she asked, her eyes widening.

“Who do you think bailed you out of jail, Mother?” he asked and crossed his arms.

Mrs. Windsor flushed in embarrassment.

“The police told me that you two are suspected of murder charges and hiding a body,” Felix said and raised his eyebrows. “Care to explain?” He waited for his mother and sister to say anything in their defense, but when they just stared at him with their mouths hanging open, a shiver of horror ran down Felix’s spine. “Are you guilty? Did you actually do those horrible things they are accusing you of?”

Madeline opened her mouth then closed it when she realized that she couldn’t lie to her son’s face.

“I can’t believe you two,” Felix said, his voice shaking as he backed slightly away from his mom and sister. “I can’t believe that you both lied to me for all these years.”

Chloe rolled her eyes at her brother’s dramatics. “Oh, stop playing the victim,” she snapped. “All of this was a big misunderstanding. It was an accident. Russell got what he deserved because he refused to listen to me.”

“Do you not feel any remorse for what you’ve done?” Felix demanded.

He was staring at his sister like he’d never really seen her before. His hands were shaking at his sides and Madeline was scared that her son was going to attack Chloe. “You took a human’s life away from him!” He pointed an accusing finger at his sister. Then, his gaze swung toward his mother. “And you helped her do it! You two make me sick.”

“You always were the weaker sibling,” Chloe spit out, staring at her brother with hatred.

Felix advanced toward Chloe and raised his hand to slap her across the face. Madeline’s stomach lurched with fear as she shot to her feet and stood between her two children before they could get into a physical altercation.

“Stop!” she begged and raised her arms, trying to block them from one another. “We can’t turn against each other in a time like this. Family has to stick together.”

“Not if you two did something horrible,” Felix snapped.

Madeline put a gentle hand on her son’s shoulder, but he cringed away from her touch.

“I’ve consulted with Officer Warren, the police in charge of the case. He has assured me that without a body, he can’t make an arrest. There’s no proof of our crime,” she whispered to Felix. “They are treating this like a missing person’s case. I paid Officer Warren to help erase the recordings that Ava and Kelly have that incriminate your sister and me. I’ve taken care of everything.”

Felix’s eyes widened as he realized that his mother bribed the police.

But even though her son was staring at her with judgment, Madeline straightened her posture and raised her chin. “I will not be looked down at for protecting my family,” she said. “I would do the same thing for you that I’ve done for your sister.”

“Yeah? Well, that’s the difference between Chloe and me. I would never ask you to do something like that,” Felix said and shook his head in disgust.

Madeline kept talking like her son hadn’t interrupted her. “Officer Warren is the same man who helped me five years ago and now he’s going to help me again. He has assured me that he is going to find a way to throw Olivia and Kelly in jail.”

Madeline smirked in satisfaction at how well her plan was shaping out to be. People might judge her for what she has done, but no one could deny that she loved her kids. Some might say that she loved them to a fault, but Madeline could never put Chloe in a mental hospital. She shuddered at the thought of how scared Chloe would be, and then what if it got out that her daughter was in one of those places? Just think about the things that people would say. She might have had her weak moments when she regretted not getting Chloe help, but now she was convinced that she had made the right decision.

“You think that Olivia is going to jail?” Felix asked.

“Her and her meddling friends are in jail right now…” Madeline said and trailed off when her son shook his head. “Are they not?”

“No, Mom. Through my sources at the Luceland police department, I heard that Alexander bailed Olivia and the rest of her group out of jail.” Felix said. “They were bailed out last night even before I paid the money to bail you out. My sources told me that they were headed straight for the commissioner’s office.”

Chloe’s hands balled into fists and Mrs. Windsor’s face went white. “Are you serious?” she asked.

“Yep,” Felix answered. “I guess money can’t buy you everything. Maybe it won’t even be enough to buy you two innocence this time.” The second part he had said under his breath, but his mother and sister still heard him.

“I knew that Alexander wanted to protect Olivia for whatever reason, but I didn’t know that he cared about the girl this much,” Mrs. Windsor said and shook her head in dismay.

“I told you not to mess with Olivia,” Felix said. “Remember, I warned you against it. Alexander and his family are too powerful to have as an enemy. With the amount of money and influence Alexander has, he has the ability to move mountains.”

Because of the news that Olivia and her horrible friends had been released from jail, a large lump had developed in Chloe’s throat. But she tried to seem like she was unaffected by this news. She didn’t want her brother or mother to know how much she was panicking on the inside. “Well, who cares if they are going to the commissioners office? There is no evidence of any crime,” Chloe insisted. “Since Russell’s body isn’t in our orchard, Alexander doesn’t have a leg to stand on.”

Madeline snapped her fingers and looked to her daughter like she was throwing her a life buoy. “Exactly! Haven’t you heard the old saying: no body, no crime?”

Felix shook his head in disgust. Even though he wanted to get away from his mother and sister, his curiosity got the better of him. “Okay, I have to know. Where the hell did you guys put the body if you didn’t bury it in our orchard?”

But Felix’s question was met with silence. Chloe looked to her mother, and Madeline shook her head just slightly.

Felix threw his hands up in frustration. “Really? Even now, you two are going to keep secrets from me?”

Madeline’s face softened. “No, that’s not it at all, sweetie. It’s just that the less you know, the better. Then, you can’t be questioned by the police. The only thing that matters is that Olivia and her group don’t know where the body is.”

“I found a flaw in your plan,” Felix said.

Madeline’s widened. “What?”

“What if Alexander-with all his connections and power-knows where the body is located. What if he is just biding his time waiting for the perfect opportunity to report it.”

Mother and daughter shared a terrified look at just the thought of Alexander Green having this information to hold over them.

“Please, will you save your sister,” Madeline begged her son, walking toward him with her hands clasped together. “If you just accept your aunt’s terms then-“

But Felix cut his mother off. “Hell would have to freeze over before I accepted any deal that our snake-like aunt has proposed. Her Chamber of Commerce is nothing more than a cult. It’s a trap set by rich people to manipulate the public. Our family should not get involved with the Cater family.” The Cater family was Madeline’s family, and Cater had been her last name before she married into the Windsor family. “I’d rather maintain the relationship that I’ve already fostered with Duke.”

“I don’t need Felix to rescue me,” Chloe snapped and crossed her arms, wincing from her still healing injuries. “I don’t need anyone except for my fianc?.” She looked to her mother. “Where’s my phone? I want to call him. He’s a smart and capable man. He will figure out a way to help me out of this mess.”

Madeline sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Honey, I don’t think Ethan will be able to come right now. Like I said, he’s busy-“

“Too busy to be with his future wife while she’s lying in a hospital bed in trouble?” Chloe demanded. “I don’t think so. Ethan loves me. He will come. Just wait and see.”

“He won’t come for you when you’re being suspected of murder,” Felix said with hatred in his voice. “I heard that he had been the one to call the cops on you in the first place. If you are convicted of murder then I bet he will cancel the wedding in a heartbeat.”
