This had to be Victoria’s influence!
When had Robert become so uncontrollable?
“Robert, I’m your father. What did you just call me?” Carter yelled.
“Oh, so you remember you’re my father! I was beginning to think I was some unwanted child. Here’s Mommy having a meal with me and my real father, but my real father is off eating with another woman and… someone else’s child! What a joke. What a cold, messed-up joke! Ha!”
The other diners, who had been merely observing the drama, now regarded Carter and Isabella with newfound interest after Robert’s outburst.
So… the situation wasn’t what it had appeared.
The woman and child who had been pushed were actually the legitimate wife and son, while the woman and child sitting with the man weren’t his family at all.
So that was the real story!
Carter noticed the shifting gazes around them. As CEO of Myers Group, he knew this could become problematic if word spread. His only consolation was that Eve Restaurant was extremely exclusive, and its clientele typically belonged to high society – they probably wouldn’t pay much attention to such matters.
“Enough. Stop embarrassing yourselves,” Carter said in a low voice, struggling to contain his anger. “Take Robert home. I’ll escort Isabella and Jenarth back to their hotel, then I’ll come home.”
He helped Isabella to her feet, but she appeared so weak she collapsed back into his arms. Jenarth anxiously clutched Isabella’s hand.
A man, a woman, and a child – they now looked like the perfect family unit.
But as for them…
Victoria ignored Carter completely, her voice calm yet firm. “Carter, I told you – you’re out of the picture. In my world, there’s no room for a man who can’t remain faithful. The only thing you need to do now is sign the divorce papers as soon as possible.”
Carter’s expression darkened completely at her words.
“Victoria, that’s enough. Divorce – it’s all you talk about anymore. You need to understand this isn’t some kind of game.”
“You think I’m playing games?” Victoria’s gaze turned glacial. “I have never been more serious about anything in my life.”
“Victoria, know your position. Ever since you were brought here from the countryside, you’ve been completely dependent on the Myers family. What skills do you actually possess? If you take Robert and leave, how do you plan to support yourself? How will you raise our son? He’s my son, a member of the Myers family. I won’t allow you to make irresponsible decisions like this.”
“The moment Mom decided on divorce, I ceased to be a Myers.” Robert declared with surprising firmness, despite his casual tone.
“You…” Carter stared at his son, stunned by the conviction in his voice. When had the boy become so sharp-tongued, so much like
Victoria?
This was undoubtedly Victoria’s influence!
Robert used to be such a compliant child. What had happened to him?
“Carter, please don’t take your anger out on the child. I’m perfectly fine, really. It was entirely my own clumsiness – being so frail that I stumbled. This has nothing to do with Victoria,” Isabella spoke softly, her head bowed in that characteristically pitiful manner.
Carter’s frustration only intensified. His fists clenched as he directed a look of pure disgust toward Victoria and Robert.
“Victoria, your behavior today… you’ve gone too far.” His breathing grew noticeably heavier.
To be perfectly honest, Carter was becoming utterly repulsive in Victoria’s eyes!
If they hadn’t been in a public setting, she might have considered physically teaching him a lesson about consequences.
Victoria met Carter’s gaze with an icy stare. “Carter, don’t flatter yourself. I’ve already moved on from you. You and your true love can do whatever you please – just don’t come looking for trouble. As you said, I’m just a crude woman. If you provoke me again, I won’t hesitate to respond accordingly.”
“You…” Carter’s hand twitched with the impulse to strike, but Isabella quickly intercepted his arm.
“Carter, please control your temper. Don’t let this situation escalate because of me. Let’s just leave, alright?” Isabella whispered, her voice barely audible.
Carter looked from Isabella’s delicate, vulnerable features to Victoria’s stubborn, defiant expression, and his annoyance deepened.
“Victoria, I’ll say this one final time. Take Robert and return to Myers Manor. I’m willing to overlook everything that’s happened today. Otherwise… I’ll actually sign those papers.” Carter was seething internally. When had Victoria become so unreasonable?
If she had been seeking his attention, she certainly had it now. But all he felt was profound disappointment and anger.
Ever since coming to the city, Victoria had lived a sheltered life under the Myers family’s protection. What practical skills did she possess? Beyond being nominally a Lewis, what did she really have? Even within her own family, only Carolyn Lewis received genuine affection. Victoria was practically invisible.
For all these years, he had been her security, her refuge. She had always been so compliant and understanding. But now…
If she continued down this path, and he withdrew the Myers family’s protection, she would be utterly lost in this city.
He had expected her to reconsider after his warning, perhaps to quietly take Robert home. Instead, Victoria pulled out her phone right in front of him and placed a call.
“It’s me, Zachary. Bring the divorce papers to Eve Restaurant immediately. Yes, right now. And don’t forget to bring a pen.”
Carter was speechless.
After ending the call, Victoria raised a challenging eyebrow at Carter. “Carter, you were the one who said you’d sign. I’m having my lawyer bring the documents now. If you refuse, you’re nothing but a liar.”
Liar!
Carter’s composure shattered completely. Even the surrounding diners, though trying to appear discreet, could clearly grasp the situation.
He had never anticipated Victoria would go this far. Divorce – was she truly that desperate to escape him?
With all these witnesses present, if word spread that the esteemed CEO Carter was being treated this way…
Could she possibly handle the consequences of a divorce?
“Victoria, you’ll come to regret this.” Carter practically growled the words through clenched teeth.
Isabella stood beside him, acutely aware of the tension radiating from his body.
Carter was beyond furious – genuinely, profoundly angry.
“Oh, I already regret it!” Victoria retorted, her eyes colder than Arctic ice. “I regret ever marrying you. I regret not divorcing you years ago.”
“Victoria!” This time, Carter’s voice erupted in a roar that echoed throughout the restaurant.
Isabella flinched and quickly tugged at his arm, whispering urgently, “Carter, let’s just go. We can forget about dining here. There are plenty of other restaurants.”
Jenarth added softly, “Daddy Carter, please let’s go! Don’t make yourself upset like this.”
Carter drew a deep breath, deciding to cease further argument with Victoria. He turned his attention to Robert and commanded, “Robert, you’re coming home with me now.”
Robert met his gaze calmly. “Make those two fakes beside you disappear, and I’ll go home with you right now. Otherwise, forget it.”
Carter was furious.
Isabella stared at Robert, her eyes momentarily flashing with shock at his sharp words. She never expected such young children could speak with such cutting clarity.
Was this truly the child’s own thinking, or had Victoria been coaching him?
Hearing Robert’s words, a cold fury ignited in Carter’s eyes. The thought that Victoria had influenced Robert to become so disrespectful instantly eroded his remaining patience.
