Slowly, her brows furrowed. His pulse was weak and chaotic, fading in and out. The condition was indeed strange. It didn’t resemble any ordinary illness.

Abigail thought to herself. Tonight, she had come to find a chance to stop the engagement between the Hawthorne family and the Gibson family.

She had returned this time to take revenge on the Gibson family. Of course, she didn’t want to see them grow stronger.

Abigail began to consider the possibility of working with Lucas. His illness was unusual, and the Hawthorne family’s situation was complicated. Getting involved might bring a lot of trouble for herself.

Her fingertips touched between Lucas’ brows. She hesitated, ultimately unable to bear letting such a beautiful man die just like that.

She raised her hand and bit her own finger, drawing blood. Then she leaned down, her red lips pressing against his, pried open his teeth, and passed the blood into his mouth.

Just as Abigail was about to rise, Lucas suddenly opened his eyes.

Those deep eyes burst with a sharp, lethal aura – like a fierce tiger roused from slumber – his entire body exuding a dangerous and overpowering presence.

Abigail didn’t have time to dodge. Their eyes met directly, and she immediately felt her hairs stand on end.

Her heart sounded an alarm, and she instinctively pulled away.

Pop!

In the tense silence of the room, that sound was magnified infinitely.

Both Abigail and Lucas froze. For a moment, the air felt frozen in place.

Right then, a faint sound came from outside the door.

Abigail reacted quickly, rolling to the side to lie down next to Lucas. She lifted the blanket and covered herself.

Fortunately, she had just come out of the asylum and was thin. Otherwise, she really wouldn’t have fit.

At the same time, Lucas closed his eyes again, going along with her act.

The door was gently pushed open, and a few footsteps echoed in.

Someone walked over and stopped by the bed. Abigail’s heart tightened.

“Andrew, how is Mr. Hawthorne today?” The voice belonged to an older woman.

“Same as always. No one knows when he’ll wake up,” a younger man answered, his tone thick with worry.

“Sigh… Madam Tessa is nearly going mad with anxiety. If Mr. Hawthorne doesn’t wake up soon, what are we going to do?” the woman said with a sigh.

Andrew Hawthorne comforted her with a few words, then escorted her out.

Once they left, Abigail threw off the blanket and sat up, breathing heavily.

“Who are you?” Lucas asked, still lying down, studying the girl in front of him – more accurately, the teenage girl.

There was a trace of caution and scrutiny in his eyes. Despite his weakened body, he maintained a natural calm and composure, as if no matter the situation, he could still control it.

Abigail’s instincts told her this man was dangerous. But seeing him unable to move after being unconscious for so long, she grew bolder.

She lifted his chin with her fingers, gently rubbing it twice, and said in a teasing tone, “Mr. Hawthorne, you’re so fierce. But I’m your fiancée, you know.”

As she spoke, she blew softly against his face, her eyes full of mischief and boldness.

Suddenly, the door flew open – Andrew had come back.

The moment he entered, he lunged at Abigail, his movements sharp and swift.

Abigail reacted even faster. The instant he pounced, she shifted her hand from Lucas’ chin to his throat, gripping it tightly.

“One more step, and I’ll kill him!”

Abigail’s presence shifted in an instant. The slyness she’d shown just moments ago vanished completely. In its place was something sharp, ruthless, and decisive – as if she had become someone else entirely.

She half-knelt over Lucas, one hand clamped tightly around his neck. A needle glinted coldly in the dim light, protruding from her ring and resting precisely against his carotid artery. One slight movement, and the outcome would be disastrous.

Andrew caught sight of the needle just in time. He pulled back and rolled to the side, springing to his feet and locking his gaze on Abigail. His fists clenched, every muscle tense as he fought the urge to rush at her.

His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he spoke in a low, cold voice. “Ms. Gibson, you must be joking. Even if not for your own sake, you wouldn’t risk harming Mr. Hawthorne – for the sake of the entire Gibson family.”

“Oh? You know who I am?” Abigail blinked in mock surprise, her threatening aura dissolving as she slipped back into the role of a harmless young woman.

She turned to Lucas and offered a sweet smile. “Lucas, how about a deal? I’ll let you go, and you tell him not to yell. We’ll talk things through, nice and calm.”

Lucas looked at her with unshaken calm, as if he didn’t care that she still had the upper hand. His voice was a little weak but steady. “Alright.”

Abigail’s lips curled into a wide grin. She let him go without hesitation.

She sat cross-legged beside him and made no move to leave.

Andrew kept a close eye on her, still on high alert, but held back for now at Lucas’ silent command.

Abigail rested her chin in one hand and tapped her cheek with a finger. She tilted her head toward Lucas, eyes flicking smartly. “You called him back, didn’t you?”

She must’ve been hiding under the covers when Lucas gave Andrew the signal to return.

Lucas didn’t confirm or deny it. He simply glanced at her – an indifferent look that seemed to see straight through her, yet gave nothing away.

He let out a soft cough and said calmly, “Ms. Gibson, you barged into my room and threatened me. Aren’t you afraid you won’t make it out alive?”

Though his voice still carried weakness, the authority behind it never wavered. No one could take him lightly.

Abigail didn’t take offense. She blinked and smiled. “I didn’t exactly have a choice.”

Andrew scoffed under his breath. He didn’t see any sign she’d been forced.

Abigail didn’t bother arguing. She got straight to the point. “You’ve been poisoned. I can cure you.”

Andrew took a sharp step forward, unable to hide the surge of hope in his voice. “Are you serious?” His tone trembled with excitement and anticipation.

So far, only three people had figured out Lucas had been poisoned, rather than stricken with some strange illness.

Lucas narrowed his eyes slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing his face – but it vanished quickly, replaced by that same unreadable calm.
