He stayed by her even as she was taken into the emergency room, and it wasn’t until she received medical help and was warded that he finally felt a sense of relief.
“Have you forgotten what you said? You said you’d leave once we reached the hospital. Why are you still around?” Liam grumbled, blocking Alyssa’s patient room door with his stocky frame.
“I’ll leave when she wakes up,” Jeremy muttered with a pale face and stood there with a straight back. He admitted that he was rather shameless.
Xavier was right. Jeremy wasn’t fated to be with Alyssa. He would have to be a little more thick-skinned if he wanted to cling to her.
“You shameless rascal!” Liam cursed in frustration, unable to contain his annoyance at Jeremy despite his usually gentlemanly ways.
Jeremy stood there, unfazed by the words hurled at him. He was immune to the shaming as he had gone through it many times.
Jonah approached him with a sour face and advised him, “Mr. Walsh, Lyse hasn’t met Liam for a long time. I think she’d prefer meeting him over you. Your presence will not help her recovery.
“You’ll only be standing in the way of a family reunion. You don’t have to worry now that she’s with family.
There’s no reason for you to stay. Please go home.”
Jonah’s eyes looked dead as he addressed Jeremy in a flat tone. Despite that, Jeremy felt the stabbing pain from Jonah’s words that froze his blood.
Outside the hospital, the outpour had stopped. The skies brightened, like a melancholic swath of blue velvet.
Jeremy walked out with heavy footsteps, gripping a wet coat in his hand. He seemed to feel Alyssa’s lingering warmth on the fabric. Feeling chilly, he clutched the coat tighter. 1
“Jeremy, Lyse has given up too much for you.”
“Did you know that she almost lost her life because of you? To go after you, she-“
To go after him? What for? What had she given up?
Jeremy wondered what had happened before this. He was plagued by Liam’s words. It was then he felt a head-splitting headache creeping up.
“Jeremy!”
“Mr. Walsh!”
Jeremy lifted his gaze in difficulty as drops of sweat trickled down his chiseled face. In a blur, he saw
Landon and Xavier running toward him.
“Jeremy, you look pale! Are you okay?”
‘I’m fine.” Jeremy hung his head and stared listlessly at the coat in his hand.
“How about Madam? Did you manage to find her? How’s she doing?” Xavier questioned anxiously.
Before Jeremy had a chance to answer, a tall figure brushed past his shoulder and headed for the
“Hey, Sean Lynch, watch where you’re going!” Xavier bellowed at Sean while pointing a finger at the latter. The encounter left Jeremy trembling like a leaf in the wind despite his tall, bulky frame.
Sean spun around and snickered at Jeremy. “Hah.”
“Fuck … What’s with that attitude? Mr. Walsh saved Ms. Alyssa, you know?” Xavier was enraged and almost wanted to fight Sean.
“He owed her that much. I’ll consider it as making amends. Don’t ever dream that I’d thank him,” Sean hissed through gritted teeth and entered the hospital.
At that moment, Jeremy felt his chest tighten and his forehead dotted by sweat. He dug his fingernails deep and hard into his palm but couldn’t feel the pain amid the agony that shot through his back and tortured his spirit.
“Jeremy, you don’t look okay! Let’s go to the hospital… Jeremy-” Midway through Landon’s persuasion,
Jeremy could not hold back and coughed up a mouthful of blood.
“Mr. Walsh!” Xavier was on the brink of tears. Sean looked similarly shocked at Jeremy, who was vomiting blood out of the blue.
Following that, Jeremy’s body trembled as he collapsed onto the floor.
Xavier, Sean, and Landon were shocked by Jeremy’s sudden fainting spell. Fortunately, they happened to be just outside the hospital’s entrance.
Without hesitation, Landon and Xavier rushed to assist the doctors and nurses in sending Jeremy into the emergency room.
Meanwhile, Sean found himself rooted to the spot at the far end of the corridor. He watched with concern as they wheeled the pale Jeremy with blood-stained lips into the emergency room.
Why did Jeremy suddenly faint? Was it a ploy to gain sympathy?
None of it added up. Jeremy had seemed perfectly fine throughout their journey to the hospital until this sudden collapse.
“Mr. Landon, is Mr. Walsh going to be…” Xavier clenched his fists, tears welling up in his eyes.
“He’ll be alright,” Landon reassured him. He glanced fearfully at the emergency room sign and mumbled,
Jeremy will pull through. He’s the toughest, coolest, and bravest guy I’ve ever known. He’ll be just fine.”
At that moment, one of Jonah’s bodyguards went up to Sean and informed him, “Mr. Lynch, I’ve been sent to bring you up.”
“Alright,” Sean replied uneasily. Before he left, he leaned in and whispered to the bodyguard, “Mr. Walsh from the Walsh Group is in the emergency room right now. Please arrange for two top-tier physicians to attend to him.”
Alyssa finally opened her eyes groggily on the evening of the second day. She felt more refreshed after the long sleep.
“Mmph… Where … am I …” She could not move her body and felt that her bones were in disarray.
“Lyse, you’re up! It’s Liam here!” Liam yelped in excitement and hugged her. He had not slept at all.
Instead, he held her hand tightly and cried through the night, as evident from his swollen eyes.
“Liam? Is that really you? You’re back… Liam!” She widened her teary eyes. Her nose turned red from the emotions.
He gave her a firm nod and a peck on the forehead. Her fever had gone down.
The previous day, the doctor had warned that if Alyssa had delayed treatment any longer, she could have
“Is it okay for you to leave your military duties behind? Do you even have any leave days?” Alyssa was more concerned about Liam than herself.
“It’s not okay to do that, but you’re my utmost priority,” he answered.
“Liam …” She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her cheek against his.
Liam hadn’t seen her for a while. A bitter taste filled his mouth when he noticed her weight loss and the dullness in her eyes.
“By the way, how did I get here?” Alyssa wondered. She sat up with Liam’s help and leaned weakly against the headboard.
Liam remained silent.
“Where’s Jeremy?” She spoke in a hoarse voice, her eyelashes fluttering.
“He came here in our helicopter. That fellow is doing just fine. Don’t worry about him,” Liam coldly brushed off the topic.
Somehow, Alyssa had an ominous feeling. She pressed on, “Where is he now?”
The door to her room swung open. Jonah and Sean entered one after another. Their faces lit up with joy upon seeing Alyssa awake.
“Ms. Alyssa!” Sean exclaimed with joyful tears in his eyes. He had wanted to rush up to Alyssa. But he restrained himself in Liam’s presence, choosing instead to kneel beside Alyssa’s bed.
“You must have been so shocked last night, Sean…” muttered Alyssa. She looked sickly, but there was a cheeky glimmer in her eyes. “I’m sorry for acting rashly, but I didn’t have a choice. I had to save a life.”
Sean gazed deeply into her eyes and shook his head as he choked on emotions. Based on what he had heard, Alyssa had come dangerously close to falling off a cliff. It was Jeremy who had risked his life to rescue her at that critical moment.
“Ms. Alyssa, there’s something I need to tell you,” Sean blurted out after a moment of hesitation. “Jeremy
Walsh suffered severe internal injuries. He coughed up blood earlier today.”
“What?” She sat up abruptly, her eyes widening in shock. Her breathing grew heavier. “H-How did that happen?
Jonah and Liam seemed equally taken aback by the sudden news.
His attending physician said that he sustained a major blow to his back, which impacted his internal wasn’t a petty, jealous liar.
A flicker of realization crossed her mind. She recalled that he had slammed his back into a huge rock when he grabbed her from the cliff’s edge and rolled away from the rockslide.
