“Lyse!” There came two distinct cries at the same time as Jonah and Liam stepped off the helicopter.
Jeremy was shocked when he noticed Liam. He was fully clad in his military outfit. He felt like he was looking through a mirror from yesteryears.
Even though he was a CEO now, staying in air-conditioned offices every day atop his family’s business empire, he could never forget his time in the army,
Now was not the time to reminisce, however. Jeremy was more concerned about who this man was to.
Alyssa.
‘Hand her over to me right now!” Liam roared, anger evident in his tone and demeanor.
Unlike Liam who had never met Jeremy, Jonah was doing a very good job at keeping cool. He cocked his head lightly when he noticed Jeremy was clad in barely anything in this cold weather while Alyssa was wrapped in his clothes.
“Lyse… What’s wrong with her?” Liam cried, storming up to Jeremy. The latter instinctively stepped back, coldly eyeing him up and down.
“Who are you?” Jeremy asked.
Jonah answered him by saying, “He’s Alyssa’s third brother.”
Jeremy’s eyes widened in shock.
Though Liam didn’t resemble his brother much, Jeremy could still find traces of Axel on his face. He just didn’t realize it at first glance.
Jeremy never knew Alyssa had a brother who was involved in the military! And at such a high ranking, too!
He pursed his lips, his grip around Alyssa tightening.
For the first time in his life, jealousy bubbled sourly in the pit of his stomach.
“Lyse…” Liam teared up, feeling bad for Alyssa. He attempted to get her out of Jeremy’s arms.
Jonah might seem the gentlest among the four sons by Alyssa’s mom, but that wasn’t true at all.
Liam always projected a stoic and aloof image due to the requirements of his profession. Yet, in reality, he was the most soft-hearted and emotional among the Taylor siblings.
He had even shed tears beneath his blanket the year he couldn’t make it home for Alyssa’s birthday due to a mission, which went to show his sensitive nature,
“I’ll hold her,” Jeremy refused to let go of Alyssa as he looked at her.
“You have no right to touch her!” Liam growled at him upon thinking of his poor, divorced sister. “Don’t forget the way you abandoned and hurt her! Stop pretending to be a saint. I wouldn’t thank you even if you saved her.”
“I never wanted to be thanked.” Jeremy paused before adding, “She means a lot to me. I admit that I had hurt her in the past. What I’m doing now is making amends.”
“No, you can never make amends,” Liam interjected sternly. “If you knew this would happen, you should not have hurt her in the first place. You took the light out of my bright, carefree sister. You will never make up for that, even if you put your life on the line!”
Jeremy froze on the spot, as if he was struck by lightning.
“Home… I want to go home…” Alyssa trembled and murmured feverishly in her sleep, cradled in Jeremy’s arms.
“Lyse, I’ll take you home!” Liam took Alyssa from Jeremy without another word. The moment he scooped her soft body up, she surprisingly grabbed Jeremy’s black shirt tightly and wouldn’t let go.
“Don’t go… Don’t …” she mumbled between consciousness.
“I’m not leaving. How could I leave you behind when you’re running a fever?” Jeremy whispered. His usual steely demeanor gave way to a softer side.
He turned to Liam and pleaded, “Let me send her to the hospital. I’ll leave once she’s there.”
“Dream on!” Liam glowered at him and barked.
“Liam,” Jonah called out to his sibling and approached him. “Let’s send her to the hospital with Mr.
Walsh “
“But Jonah-“
*Anyway, Mr. Walsh, I’ll have to thank you for saving Lyse. Do get on the plane with us,” Jonah calmly extended an invitation.
Jeremy felt his heart squeezed and replied dejectedly, “Thanks.”
Once again, he gently wrapped Alyssa in his arms like recouping something he had lost.
The helicopter Xavier sent over had arrived then, but Jeremy gestured at it to return. Then, he boarded the helicopter with Jonah and Liam.
The helicopter took off into the night. All the while, Jeremy never let go of Alyssa.
Liam touched her warm forehead. He breathed heavily as tears brimmed in his eyes. He called out to her,
“Lyse, open your eyes. I’m by your side. I’m back.”
“Liam, it’s just a fever. Don’t worry too much,” Jonah reassured his brother despite his own worries.
“Ms. Alyssa has gone through a lot. She almost fell off the cliff today,” Jeremy stated, his gaze fixed on her. The memory of that harrowing moment still haunted him.
That caught Jonah and Liam off guard. They were gripped by lingering fear in the aftermath.
“I merely offered her a helping hand. She saved herself,” Jeremy explained.
“Jeremy Walsh, you’re really a piece of shit,” seethed Liam. “You are the source of all her suffering.”
“I know. It’s all my fault,” admitted Jeremy. After all the ups and downs in life, he finally grasped the cruelty of his actions toward Alyssa. Hence, he humbly accepted all criticisms directed at him.
“Why did you marry her if you didn’t love her? Why did you give her false hope?” Liam glared at him. through tears that had rolled down his cheeks.
Liam added, “She is fond of this mountain. It’s a special place for her because of you! She’s lived her life for you, but what have you ever done for her?”
Jeremy’s soul felt like it had been torn apart, and his heart twisted with a crushing pain.
What had he ever done for Alyssa? Nothing.
He had never proposed to her and given her anything she deserved as his wife. He left her behind on their first night of marriage and slept in a separate quarter.
He had never celebrated festivals or anniversaries with her nor bought her any gifts. That year, when she was involved in a car crash with Newton, he did not even rush to her side promptly.
All of these terrible actions paled in comparison to the fact that he had been in love with another woman, squandering Alyssa’s best years and making a mockery of her love.
His eyes welled up with emotion. He tightly clasped her hand, pressing it against his chest while breathing heavily.
He felt remorseful for his past actions, but it was too little, too late.
Like Jonah, Liam understood the depth of Alyssa’s suffering over the years. The thought of it broke his heart every time.
He began, “Jeremy, Lyse has given up too much for you. Did you know that she almost lost her life because of you? To go after you, she-“
“Liam Taylor, that’s enough!” Jonah interrupted him firmly, his brows furrowed.
Liam bit back his words but clenched his fists in frustration. Oh, how he wished he could punch Jeremy in the face!
Still, he wasn’t as rash as Axel. After years of holding an important position in the military, his temper had mellowed. Now, he was more sensible and calm.
He’d only lose his temper over matters concerning Lyse.
“What did that mean?” Jeremy questioned as he felt a stinging pain.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that Alyssa had been keeping an even bigger secret from him. Doubts gnawed at him. “You mentioned she nearly lost her life for me. When did this happen? Tell me!”
“Mr. Walsh,” said Jonah with a grave expression. “The grudges between you and Lyse are in the past. We won’t look into it if she doesn’t want to bring it up. It’s time to put an end to your conflict with her and move on.
“However, if you continue intruding on her life from now on, I will not hesitate to act on you.”
Hearing that, Liam added, “Stay out of her life if you want to honor your past relationship with her. You’ve already caused her enough pain. Do you really want to ruin the rest of her life? You do not deserve to be with her after casting her aside like trash.”
Alyssa was rushed to the hospital by Jonah and Liam. Jonah kept the news under wraps and discreetly arranged for a helicopter from Leichtown. Winston remained unaware of what had happened to his daughter.
Had he known about Alyssa’s precarious situation, he would have gone on a rampage in Solana City.
Jeremy had not once left Alyssa’s side. He left the helicopter and followed Jonah and Liam closely.
