Chapter 380 – The Regretful Billionaire: An Unpredicted Reunion

“Tell me. Who would the mastermind be?” Zeke looked at Luke.

Luke was stunned. He couldn’t think of a suspect. With the situation the Quinceys were in, no one should have the guts to attack them.

He shook his head. Zeke was not angry. He smiled, saying, “We’ll have to observe who benefits the most from this.”

“My uncle…” Luke said instinctively. Then, he clamped his mouth and looked at Zeke cautiously.

“That’s possible. However, I don’t think he has the ability.” If Yakov had a team of henchmen like that, he needn’t worry about being the next heir.

Luke thought that made sense. Yakov was not a charming person. There was no way he’d have so many supporters. If he did, Xavier and Zeke would have found out at once.

Luke couldn’t think of anyone else at the moment. “I can’t figure it out. I can’t think of anyone who would do a thing like this.”

“What about Eustace?” Zeke asked.

Luke was shocked. “Eustace? Does he have an ability like that?”

“Who knows? I think he’s the greatest benefactor of your father’s death. You are all rivals, to begin with.” Zeke felt that Eustace definitely had something to do with it.

Luke didn’t think it was realistic. “But this time, he didn’t have the time to do it.”

“We were just wondering why he would agree to your invitation despite knowing the danger ahead. What if he was creating an alibi for himself?” Zeke was, after all, a living fossil. He had reasons for his analysis.

Luke was shocked. “So, you mean…*

“It’s not impossible. Look at all his preparations. Why would he come if he hadn’t already thought of this? Why would he prepare ahead?” Zeke smiled bitterly. He couldn’t help wishing that Eustace was his grandson, not Zachary’s. That way, he wouldn’t be so stressed about the next heir.

What a pity that such a brilliant man was not his own.

You Have Me in Your Heart

News of Xavier’s murder spread through Bardoff City like wildfire. Nearly everyone strengthened their security systems to avoid something like that happening to them.

If someone had attacked the Quinceys, it didn’t just mean that those killers were arrogant. It meant that the Quinceys were defenseless. They were now the city’s laughingstock.

Precisely because of that, Xavier’s memorial was not a large affair. Only close friends and relatives came to visit, and he was then buried in the Quinceys’ graveyard. The Quinceys seemed to want it to die down as quickly as possible. They didn’t even seem to want to hunt down the attackers.

Everyone was curious to know what the Quinceys’ action meant. Someone as pompous as Xavier had been killed. Were they going to take it lying down?

In Bardoff Hospital, Danika completed her rounds and walked into Eustace’s ward. He had been there for two to three days, but he could still not be discharged. After all, he was shot and then thrown off a cliff. Although he had saved his own life by hanging on to the roots under the cliff, he had gotten hurt in the process.

When she got in, Eustace was on the phone. He was delegating work to one of his employees. Danika turned to leave, but Eustace swiftly hung up and smiled at her. “So you came.”

Danika murmured in response and walked over. “To perform a check-up.”

Although she was not the doctor in charge of him, she had a right to visit his ward as his head was injured in the fall.

Eustace did not move, letting her perform her duties on him.

After a while, Danika said, “Lucky people are just built differently. There’s nothing much wrong with you. It’s like the Heavens are looking after you.”

She sounded upset when she said that, and Eustace picked up on it. However, he didn’t seem to mind. “I already made all the necessary preparations to make sure I didn’t die.”

“And what does that have to do with me?” Danika glared at him.

He smiled dryly. He knew that Danika was angry. He hadn’t told her about the plan, and he hadn’t considered the consequences. But the deed was already done. Now, he had to figure out how to appease her instead of crying over spilled milk.

Eustace chuckled dryly and said, “Danika, let me treat you to lunch today.”

“There’s no need for that,” Danika refused.

“I know that you have me in your heart, Danika. I heard about it from Paul. You went to the turf club immediately to find me.” Once Eustace found out, he was certain of Danika’s feelings. He couldn’t let her go this time.

Danika bit her lip. If she had known that Eustace had gone prepared, she wouldn’t have gone.

She looked at him, still feeling angry. “Who said I was there to look for you? Couldn’t I just be going there for the fun of it?”

“Fine. I guess.” Eustace didn’t want to press the topic.

Danika had a lot of questions she meant to ask. Before, Eustace had just woken up, and his body was still weak, so she was not in a hurry to ask him anything. But now that he had recovered somewhat, she asked, “Why did you go? You knew that Luke had hidden motives. I just can’t think of why you would want to go.”

Eustace was silent.

“Forget it if you’re gonna keep quiet.” Danika was about to leave.

“It’s not that I don’t want to tell you. I was afraid that if I did, you’d think I was despicable.” It was a murder, after all. Even though the killer was Evan, Eustace was the true mastermind.

Danika said nothing, but she pulled over a chair and sat next to him. Her intentions were clear.

He Has No Evidence

Eustace didn’t know whether or not to be amused. It felt like Danika was there for a bedtime story.

He told her everything about the plan and his preparations. However, he did not say that those people belonged to Evan. He just said that they were his. After all, he had made a promise to Evan.

After Eustace was done speaking, Danika’s face turned solemn. “So, Xavier was killed by your men?”

“Yes.” Eustace nodded.

“Did you have to kill him?” Danika frowned. She couldn’t understand. She knew the Quinceys were fighting tooth and nail to be the next heir. However, she thought it was only just a fight. She was not expecting murder.

Eustace knew what she meant. He sighed. “It looks like Luke is attacking me on the surface, but this incident has Xavier’s trademark written all over it. You know that, don’t you?”

Danika nodded. She didn’t think it was strange at all. Luke and Xavier were one and the same.

“I used to think that anyone who would attack me would be Xavier and Luke. But they were using firearms. I suspect that Zeke had agreed to it. They wouldn’t be using firearms so openly otherwise.”

It wasn’t really a suspicion. Eustace was already sure of it. But he toned it down in front of Danika.

Danika was stunned into silence. However, it made sense. Such a huge incident would not have been carried out by Luke and Xavier alone without Zeke’s permission.

Suddenly, Eustace’s actions made sense. “Your family is a mess.”

It wasn’t just a mess. It was violent and brutal. There was no bond to be had amongst them.

“Yeah. Little arguments like in the Zellwegers are the exception.” It wasn’t just the Quinceys.

Any of the other Ten Elites was chaos internally.

Danika sighed. She was glad to be a Zellweger. Although Rowena and Jolene caused trouble, it wasn’t really a big issue. Graham protected his own. Inheriting the Zellwegers wouldn’t be a problem.

She asked Eustace, ‘ But aren’t you afraid that Zeke will find out about you being the mastermind behind Xavier’s death? He’s not going to let it go.”

Things looked calm on the surface, but she felt it was the calm before the storm. Something was bound to happen.

“There’s nothing to be afraid of. As long as he can’t find those people, he has no evidence to determine that it was me. When Xavier died, I was nearly killed by his grandson. Luke is my best witness.” If it weren’t for this witness, he wouldn’t have risked his life for it.

“Do you think Zeke would believe that?” Danika didn’t think that Zeke was a fool. So what if Eustace had a witness? Xavier was dead, and only two people benefitted from it.

Eustace was obviously a suspect.

Eustace didn’t mind. He smiled, saying, “It doesn’t matter if he believes it. So what if he thinks I’m the killer? He has to have proof. Otherwise, he’d be suspecting everybody in the city. On top of that, the Quinceys have their own rivals. There are so many families looking up at him. He wouldn’t dare to behave rashly.”

It looked to be a minor issue, but if they were to be caught, they would easily be hurt.

As Expected of Mr. Quincey

Danika gave him a thumbs-up after he was done. ‘As expected of Mr. Quincey.” “Don’t tease me, Danika.’ Eustace felt embarrassed. He was afraid that she would have a bad impression of him. He wasn’t just a mindless killer.

If he did not make a move on the Quinceys, Xavier would never let go of his hold on his position. Eustace was forced to do it.

Danika smiled lightly. “I’m not teasing you. I’m honestly admiring you. You’re a natural businessman. The Quinceys will be yours, and you will bring them to the new light.”

Although the Quinceys looked to be in their prime, Danika could feel that the family wasn’t as amazing as they looked. They were only tough on the outside. Otherwise, Zeke would not have done this to select his heir. He would not be so worried if they were truly capable.

Eustace didn’t care about it right now. What he cared about was something else. He looked at Danika and asked, “Can you forgive me now? I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know if it was in my right to do so. What if I told you about it, and you told me it was none of your business? What would I do, then?”

That was something she could picture herself saying.

A trace of embarrassment flashed through her eyes, but it disappeared quickly. “It’s the same now. You needn’t ask for my forgiveness because it has nothing to do with me.”

Eustace was silent. Then, emotionally, he said, “When are you going to stop torturing me, Danika?”

“Do you really want to be with me, Eustace?” Danika suddenly asked.

He nodded at once, his gaze sincere. “Yes!”

“When are you going to learn to prioritize your safety? I don’t want to have a boyfriend who might lose his life any time.” What if they married, and she became a widow?

Danika got up and left the ward. Eustace rested against his pillow, saying nothing.

Danika’s worries were justified. He was always putting himself at risk. He wasn’t just unlucky; he actively put himself in danger. This would not provide security for any woman.

He sighed, murmuring, “I have to be the head of the Quinceys as quickly as possible.”

Once he was the head of the family, he would not be in such danger. He would be able to provide security to Danika.

He was still lost in his thoughts when the door was opened once again. But this time, it was Evan who walked in.
