Amber shut her eyes in fear as she waited for death.

But what awaited her was a deep and warm embrace.

When Carl fell off the building, Axel grabbed Amber’s arm in time. With a roar, Axel pulled her into his arms.

His broad back curved, shielding her completely beneath his heaving chest. He longed to hold her deep within him.

“Amber, you’re alright now. You’re okay,” Axel comforted her in a shaky voice.

Axel’s body shook uncontrollably, his tears, pounding heart, and labored breaths betraying his turmoil. Only his grip on Amber remained steady.

Amber, in her white wedding dress, slumped in his arms. She mustered all her energy to hug him back, but her arms felt as heavy as lead. She couldn’t lift them up at all.

‘Oh, dear Lord… Thank God!”

Cyrus let out a long exhale. He had been scared shitless. “I swear that this is the most terrifying crime scene that I’ve handled within these three years. If this happens every other day, all that fear is going to leave me with an occupational injury!”

‘Jeremy is a sharpshooter. I can’t imagine the outcome if he hadn’t assisted us in secret.” Jonah peered at the church opposite them. With relief in his eyes, he remarked, “None of the men in the Taylor family can compare to him.’

Carl, who had fallen off the building, died a horrendous death.

The authorities covered his body with a white cloth and moved him to the police station for further examination and processes that followed.

Jeremy, the sniper who had been lying in wait on the church rooftop, completed his arduous task successfully. He packed his gun away. With a deep look in his eyes, he left calmly.

He was composed, steady, and quiet. Yet, it was through his composure that he made the most pivotal attack.

Due to the immense shock, Amber’s body showed signs of somatization.

In the ambulance, Axel enveloped her in his arms, holding her close.

His eyes were swollen red, and his breathing was deep and heavy. Like a fine sculpture, he maintained the still posture of an embrace.

The sound of both racing hearts pounding against one another created a resonance.

It was as if they were composing a duet that would play for the rest of their lives.

A moment later, Amber slowly lifted her pale face and asked gently, “Are you feeling alright?”

Axel lowered his head and looked into her eyes as he held her in his arms. He opened his mouth to speak but couldn’t make a sound.

Like an elderly man, he lifted his hands slowly.

Firstly, he pointed at his heart with his right hand. Then, he made fists with both hands and crossed his forearms over his chest.

Finally, he pointed his trembling finger at Amber.

Amber’s heart was warmed. The corners of her lips curled upward. With her soft hands, she caressed Axel’s rough ones. She welled up with tears and smiled at him.

“I love you too.”

The intense confrontation had finally ended. Despite the grave danger, everyone escaped unharmed.

The sole exception was Carl, a key member of Jameson’s team, who was fatally shot. His death marked the complete downfall of Jameson’s reign of terror, which had lasted nearly a decade.

Now, the only task remaining was to bring that viper, Jameson, to justice.

Axel accompanied Amber to the hospital. Police secured the crime scene, keeping reporters at bay.

Jeremy exited the church and reconvened with Jonah and Cyrus.

“That was such a dangerous situation. Thank goodness you were here this time, Jeremy!” Cyrus approached him immediately. Feeling extremely moved, he gave Jeremy a bear hug.

‘Thank you, Jeremy.” Jonah, too, shot him a smile of admiration and gratitude.

Jeremy lifted his hand and wiped the sweat off his forehead.

“I didn’t do much. If it wasn’t for Axel’s agility in going up and grabbing onto Amber in time, she might’ve ended up falling to her death.” His gaze was fiery.

A surge of emotions coursed through him. After years of ordinary life, pulling the trigger had rekindled the fierce spirit he’d felt fighting terrorists at Luminara. A familiar image of a slender figure fighting beside him flashed through his mind.

Strange as it was, his being was greatly encouraged, allowing him to fire with deadly accuracy.

“Don’t worry, Jeremy.” Cyrus chuckled as he stepped forward and gave Jeremy a pat on his broad shoulder. “When we return, we’ll brag to Lyse about your heroic deed nonstop, so much so that she would even be able to dream about how cool you looked when you fired that headshot!”

Jonah furrowed his brows, unsure how to react. Them Taylors were capable of going against a powerful army if they were serious about it. On the flip side, they could get pretty crazy when they were out of their minds.

‘That’s not necessary, Cyrus. I just did my job.” Jeremy smiled slightly. Yet, his eyes held a spark of joy. He couldn’t wait to share this thrilling experience with Alyssa.

‘Let’s get back to the presidential office. Miley and Lyse must be worried sick,” Jonah said.

“Let me first give Lyse a call to tell her that we’re all safe.”

Jeremy couldn’t conceal the look of anticipation on his handsome face. He took his phone out and called Alyssa, only to hear a cold, automated message. “The number you are trying to reach is currently switched off. Please try again later.”

Stunned, Jeremy frowned and tried again, but the result was the same.

For some reason, he felt short of air. A series of painful pricks surged deep in his heart, as if a virus were spreading rapidly through his insides, reaching the ends of every nerve in his body. The hand holding his phone began to tremble uncontrollably.

Jonah noticed something amiss in Jeremy’s expression. Immediately, he asked, in a concerned voice, “What’s wrong, Jeremy?

*Jonah, Lyse’s phone is switched off,” Jeremy answered in a hoarse voice, his heart pounding.

“It’s switched off?” Cyrus blinked. “Perhaps it ran out of battery?”

*Lyse and I live together. I know her habits well,” Jeremy said, his heart racing. He had a bad feeling a bout this. A chill ran up his spine.

He added, “She never turns her phone off, even when sleeping. It’s on vibrate. She would never put her phone in silent mode. And now, we’re overseas on a dangerous mission. There’s no way she would turn it off when she and Miley are waiting for us at the presidential office.”

Jonah and Cyrus looked at one another. All of a sudden, they became alarmed too.

“I don’t feel good about this, Jonah. I need to get back to the presidential office now!” Jeremy’s voice tensed, and his eyes reddened with agitation.

“Don’t panic, Jeremy. We’ll make our way back right now. In the meantime, let’s call Miley to get confirmation on Lyse’s status.”

Jonah placed his hand firmly on Jeremy’s shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “The presidential office and royal palace are the safest places in all of Kontina. Plus, Lyse is together with Miley. If anything happened to Lyse, Miley would’ve already called us. Don’t worry too much.”

Despite his words, Jonah felt a growing unease. As Alyssa’s eldest brother, he cared deeply for her.

Cyrus immediately called Miley. His expression hardened. “This isn’t good. Miley isn’t answering,” he said grimly.

In an instant, the faces of all three men turned grim.

Jeremy, Jonah and Cyrus raced back to the presidential office.

The moment they entered the courtyard, they sensed something was off. The guards who were supposed to be standing outside the doors had disappeared.

“Miley!” “Lyse!”

They called out as they ran into the living room. Their jaws dropped at the sight before them.

Miley was curled up on the couch, her hands covering her face. She looked like she was in pain, her shoulders slightly shivering. She seemed to be sobbing.

“Miley!” Jeremy’s heart tightened. He rushed to her. “What happened? Where’s Lyse?”

Miley’s body trembled. She slowly lifted her face from her hands. Her complexion was pale and streaked with tears, and her eyes were swollen and red. “Lyse is…”

“What happened to her? Tell us!” Jeremy demanded, his voice rough with emotion.

He had always been steady as a mountain, firm as a rock, and deep as the sea. The more dangerous the circumstances, the calmer he grew. But this was only true if Lyse was unharmed. Any threat to Lyse, no matter how minor, would shake his world and make him lose his composure.

*Jeremy, please calm down!” Jonah’s chest tightened, but he still went forward and put his arms around Jeremy’s trembling shoulders. “The most important thing right now is to figure out what happened and where Lyse went.”

All the blood had drained from Cyrus’ face. He was visibly panicking. In an unsteady voice, he cried out, “Stop crying, Miley! Tell us. Where’s Lyse?”

Just then, they heard the sound of footsteps approaching them.
