As Axel inhaled deeply, the frigid air felt like knives in his lungs. His muscles tensed as he stepped away from the balcony.
Startled, he froze. “Dad?”
As a top agent, Axel was quick and sharp. But his emotions had clouded his senses, and he hadn’t noticed Winston’s arrival.
‘Were you talking to that Schmidt bastard, Axel? Winston’s gaze was concerned. “Why did he call you? What does he want?”
‘Nothing,” Axel replied, his lashes fluttering, his face pale.
Years of solitude and the nature of his job had made him a lone wolf. Due to this, he had always found it hard to confide in anyone. Besides, he and Winston had always been distant. So naturally, he kept to himself.
“Nothing? How could it have been nothing?” Anxious, Winston went right up to Axel. You are my son. No matter how annoyed you are by me or how much you try to avoid me, you are still my son!
‘You’re not like Silas or Liam, who share their feelings. Or Jonah, who makes friends everywhere. You seem strong and independent, but I know you worry the most. You are the one with the most fragile of hearts. You are my son. How could I not be worried?”
Axel met Winston’s gaze, a crushing pain in his heart.
*Jameson is a ruthless man with many evil deeds under his belt. He even dared to set me up so he could have Lyse. As for you… he wouldn’t even bat an eye even if he killed you.” Winston grabbed Axel’s shoulders, desperation in his voice. “Ax, don’t go. No matter what Jameson says, don’t go.”
Axel let out a haughty laugh, feigning indifference. “Have you forgotten that I’m a secret agent, Dad? You would’ve seen my obituary long ago if Jameson’s little trick was enough to stumble me.”
‘Damn it. I wasn’t joking with you!” Winston was furious, hitting Axel’s head. ‘As your father, I ar forbidding you from going!”
Despite the pain, Axel felt a warmth in his heart. This rare moment of connection made him regret their distant past.
“I have to go, Dad,” Axel said, his gaze determined. “I must see Jameson. My beloved woman is in his hands.”
What woman? What woman can be more important than you?”
‘She is as important to me as I am to you.” Waves of sorrow surged within Axel. He choked,”
I want to marry her, Dad. I want to be together with her.”
Winston was astounded. His heart wrenched. The Taylors were passionate lovers.
‘Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll retum safely with your daughter-in-law,” Axel promised, hugging
Winston.
Winston was near tears. Knowing he couldn’t stop his son, he said, “Just come back safely. I’ll wait for you.”
Axel chuckled. “I will. You’ll be crying tears of joy when I retum.”
Winston scoffed and smacked Axel’s head again. “What’s this talk about tears? Don’t talk about crying! It’s bad luck!”
Axel escorted Winston back into his room. Just as he came back out, he saw Jeremy, Alyssa and Jonah standing in a line. They looked ready for battle.
“What are you guys doing?” Axel blinked. Even then, he joked, “Is this the night before a war? Have you been reading too much military fiction?”
‘Axel, we’re going with you to save Ms. Altman,” Jeremy said, holding tightly onto Alyssa’s hand. His gaze was intense and determined.
“What are you saying, Jeremy?” Axel’s lips curled into his usual, careless smile. His nonchalance was as if the world’s end held no consequence for him.
“Who said I’m going for a final battle? I’m just returning to work. I’ve been absent for days. The organization might fire me if I don’t go back. Then I’ll lose my pension.”
*Stop pretending. I’ve overheard your conversation with Dad.” Alyssa pouted, pinching her earlobe. “Don’t forget my awesome eavesdropping skills!”
Axel was left speechless. Alyssa truly had a knack for eavesdropping on everything.
‘I’m determined to get Amber back, no matter what.’ Axel took a deep breath. A dull pain spread throughout his heart. “Jameson’s bold enough to reveal his location and even invited me to Kontina. This just shows that it will be one hell of a fierce battle. Honestly, I’m terrified.”
“Axel…” Jonah’s eyes welled up as he stepped forward, placing his hands firmly on Axel’s shoulders.
Axel!” Jeremy and Alyssa struggled to hold back their emotions too.
‘I’m not afraid of dying. I’m just afraid of not coming back alive to all of you,” Axel’s casual smile weighed heavily on everyone’s hearts.
“That’s rubbish, Axel!” Jonah wrapped his arms around Axel. “I will be with you. I will protect you and make sure that nothing happens to you!”
“Don’t be silly, Jonah. Julien would cry his eyes out if anything were to happen to you,’ Axel teased.
With tears in his eyes, Jonah replied in a choked voice, “We’ll all come back alive. We’ll be reunited with the ones we love and live out our lives together…
Alyssa couldn’t bear the scene. As a sensitive person, her tears started to fall.
“Let me go with you, Axel,” Jeremy said, his arm around Alyssa’s waist, his tense jaw emphasizing his sharp features. “We’re academy alumni. I may have left the military for business, but a soldier’s blood still runs in me. Who better to be on the front line if not me?”
“That’s right. We’re alumni, Axel said, touched. His eyes twinkled. “I didn’t expect us to fight alongside each other like this.”
“Jeremy…” Alyssa looked deeply at him with flushed cheeks. Intense pride surged through her, but worry consumed her. Still, she didn’t want to add to Jeremy’s burden. Besides, if she kept him from going, he’d regret not taking Jameson down.
With tears held back, she forced a calm expression. “Silas and Cyrus have been working on this case. On top of that, Nicholas is a state witness. Additionally, Jameson’s hideout in Solana City is compromised, Schmidt Group’s shares have plummeted, and those responsible have either been arrested or dismissed from their roles.
“He’s at his wits’ end in Kontina. Cyrus managed to get a Red Notice issued, so the police are already searching for him.
*Previously, Jeremy had not built a strong enough case against Jameson. But now that he has, with the president’s authority, Jeremy has ensured that Kontina’s authorities are also on the hunt for Jameson. Escape is impossible this time.”
Axel’s heart pounded. ‘It’s only five days until Amber and Carl’s wedding.”
Alyssa’s eyes gleamed with determination. “I’ll go with you all.”
All three men widened their eyes. In unison, they exclaimed, “No way!”
*No one knows Jameson better than I do,” Alyssa said calmly, predicting their response. “Him calling Axel means he’s prepared to die with him. Otherwise, with his power, even Axel would struggle to find him. There was no reason for him to expose himself. His purpose wasn’t to lure Axel for Amber but to see me.”
Jonah and Axel were stunned. Yet, they said nothing in response. Deep down, they knew that Alyssa was right. Still, they couldn’t have their beloved sister risk her life.
‘Don’t go, Lyse!” Jeremy threw his arms around Alyssa without warning. He could almost feel his heart leaping out of his chest.
His embrace was tight, almost suffocating. Alyssa could barely breathe.
Even so, she remained firm in her decision. “I want to go, Jeremy. No matter what happens, I want to be with you. We’ll be together forever.”
“No, Lyse…” Jeremy’s voice was rough, filled with fear. They had endured many trials to be together, but this time, Jeremy felt an ominous premonition of something terrible awaiting them.
“It’s time to end things with Jameson and me.” Alyssa smiled softly, soothing Jeremy’s back. “Do you think Jameson will give up if I stay hidden? He’ll just find more ways to force me out. The longer I refuse, the more harm he’ll cause to those around me. You know me, Jeremy. I won’t back down now.”
Late at night, the moon shone on lovers making love. Alyssa was especially proactive, and Jeremy burned with passion. It was as if this was their last chance to be one.
Jeremy was drenched in sweat, his muscles quivering beneath Alyssa’s touch.
Alyssa’s body rose and fell like the waves, their shadows dancing in the crystal light.
‘Lyse… I have to keep you safe. I have to keep you safe,” Jeremy whispered over and over again.
“I trust you.” Alyssa wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply as her hips gyrated in a slow, sensual rhythm.
They spent the night this way, whispering and holding each other until dawn.
The next four days were ordinary but fulfilling. Alyssa accompanied Jeremy to visit Newton and spent the night there. They even had a video call with Landon and Lauren.
The couple had already honeymooned in three countries and were about to embark on their next adventure.
*Jeremy, Lyse, Jameson has now become a wanted man. He’s escaped to Kontina, hasn’t he?” Landon asked, taking advantage of a moment alone with the couple while Lauren was with Jordan for her medications. Knowing you two, I’m sure you plan to head to Kontina to capture that bastard yourselves.”
He continued, “I’m worried. I want to be there to fight alongside you all!”
“If you truly care about us, there’s only one thing you need to do-stay with Lauren,” Alyssa responded, leaning into Jeremy’s arms. Her expression turned serious. “Remember, Landon, no matter what happens, you must stay by Lauren’s side. Don’t falter.”
She emphasized, “Don’t forget what you went through to marry her. No one is more important than Lauren. Not even Jeremy.”
Landon looked at Jeremy, clarifying quickly, “Jeremy, I wasn’t the one who said that, okay?”
“No worries. Lyse is right, though.” Jeremy lowered his eyes and chuckled softly. He then playfully nibbled Alyssa’s earlobe. “If I were to choose between you and my wife, I’d choose my wife. My wife is more important.”
Alyssa was giggled, feeling shy.
