Jeremy’s gaze darkened. “What about the will?”
“Anticipating his health decline, Mr. Victor had me witness him writing his will. He left nothing to Jameson, neither control of Schmidt Group nor any family assets.” Jason’s anger was evident. “Jameson seized everything by force!”
Jeremy’s gaze sharpened. “Can I ask you a question, Mr. Derullere?”
“Of course, if I can answer.”
“Did Jameson have anything to do with Mr. Victor’s death?”
Jason faltered. “Though I didn’t witness it… I’m sure he was involved. Mr. Victor had a heart condition, but with timely medication, he wouldn’t require emergency measures.
“Mr. Jameson was with him that day when his condition flared up. Mr. Victor always carried Nitroglycerin. But that day, of all days, he skipped his medication.
“Later, I confirmed that the medication wasn’t on him. Who else but Jameson could have watched Mr. Victor suffer and do nothing?”
“That’s a logical conclusion,” Xavier said, “but we lack evidence.”
Jason shook his head, defeated and angry.
“Jameson has committed countless crimes. While Mr. Victor’s death was unfortunate, we can still find other ways to persecute Jameson.” Jeremy fixated on Jason with a serious expression. “Mr. Derullere, would you be willing to come forward and testify about Jameson tampering with the will and his illegal takeover?”
“I would, but I fear for my family…”
“Don’t worry. My wife and I will do all we can to protect you and your family. I can send your wife and son overseas on my private jet. Even Jameson wouldn’t be able to track them, and if he’s that capable he can scour the entire world for them.
“Once things settle here, I’ll reunite you. Does that sound agreeable?” Jeremy offered sincerely.
Gratitude filled Jason’s eyes as he wiped away his tears. He nodded. “Alright. I’ll do everything in my power to get rid of that scum!”
Inside the car, the three solidified their plan. Afterward, Jason left.
“Xavier,” Jeremy instructed, influenced by Alyssa’s caution, “take some men and discreetly follow Jason. I’m worried about his safety.” “On it!” Xavier immediately exited the car.
Jeremy then headed toward Walsh Group in his black MPV. During the drive, his phone rang. It was Alyssa, her voice laced with urgency. “Jeremy, come to the station@ight away. Nicholas wants to see us!”
Once Jeremy heard the news, he became energized. He headed straight for the police station.
Alyssa and Cyrus were already waiting outside the interrogation room when he arrived.
“Sorry I’m late, Lyse,” Jeremy apologized breathlessly as soon as he arrived. He truly was the epitome of a gentleman.
“Don’t worry,” Alyssa said, coming closer. “I was afraid something might happen to you if you rushed over.” She gently wiped the sweat from his forehead with her sleeve.
Jeremy grabbed her by her wrist, his gaze intense. “I met with someone just now, Lyse. I have good news!”
Alyssa’s eyes lit up. “What is it?”
“Let’s get down to business first,” Jeremy said, tapping the tip of her nose playfully. Affection gleamed in his eyes.
“Nicholas will be here any minute. I’ll handle the interrogation myself,” Cyrus announced, beaming. The case had dragged out for far too long. Finally, there was a breakthrough.
“Cyrus, be mindful of your approach,” Alyssa cautioned gently. “Nicholas has held a high position. He was your superior. Even though he’s a criminal now, arrogance is likely ingrained in him. Be polite and ask leading questions without being overbearing or putting too much pressure on him.”
“Jeez! Of course I know all these. I haven’t been a criminal investigator all these years for nothing.” Cyrus gave Alyssa a few firm pats on her shoulder. “Don’t worry. Leave it to me.”
With that, he entered the interrogation room.
Alone, Jeremy and Alyssa locked eyes. A flicker of worry crossed Jeremy’s face. “What made Nicholas decide to talk?”
As usual, Alyssa fiddled with
Jeremyused hand, as if it were her favorite plaything. “The Schmidt
Group’s Director of Legal Affairs Mr.
Derullere, visited him today.
Jeremy playfully hooked her fingers back. “I know.”
“Oh?” Surprise flickered in Alyssa’s eyes. Then, she had a sudden revelation. “So you met with Mnet
Deruflere privately? Is the good news you have for me related to him?”
Jeremy briefly frowned before he chuckled, shaking his head. “Do you have to be so intelligent, Lyse? You see right through me. I feel naked when I’m before you.”
“Well, I’ve already seen all of you anyway.” Alyssa giggled, her gaze flickering to his white shirt. Her finger traced a circle over his abdomen. “Your moles, your sensitive spots, your abs… I know them all.”
They were at a police station, yet Alyssa was flirting openly!
“Lyse, we’re at the station,” Jeremy reminded her in a low voice, pulling her close by the waist.
Alyssa pouted, feigning offense. “What’s wrong? We’re practically an old married couple. Why act so proper?” “Proper?”
Jeremy couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle. He leaned into Alyssa, gently nibbling her earlobe. “I just wish I could do that with you right now.”
Alyssa’s cheeks flushed a rosy red as she met his gaze, her beauty captivating.
Cyrus and Nicholas sat alone in the interrogation room, a camera recording their every move.
“You may begin,” Cyrus said gently, gesturing for Nicholas to speak.
Nicholas, handcuffed and weary, leaned back with a desolate expression. “I’ve disappointed you, haven’t I?”
“Would you like to hear the truth? Yes,” Cyrus replied honestly.
Nicholas closed his eyes, a cold smile twisting his lips in a mix of relief and regret. “I appreciate your honesty. It’s refreshing.”
“Back then, you personally awarded me my First and Second Order of Merit badges. I remember your words clearly. You told me always to uphold justice and eliminate evil while clinging to my virtues. You also told me to be a good officer and always to serve the people.”
Cyrus took a deep breath, his emotions churning as he watched Nicholas. “Since joining the force, you’ve been a role model to us all. Finding out about your actions shattered my faith. The man I looked up to became the devil’s accomplice. When I arrested you, did you think I felt satisfaction?”
A shiver ran down Nicholas’ spine. He slumped forward, burying his face in his hands. After a long silence, his wracked sobs echoed in the cold room, tears of regret dripping onto the table.
Cyrus felt a suffocating mix of emotions swirling within him. He didn’t know where to begin.
“Actually… you’re on the right track,” Nicholas finally croaked, wiping his tears. “The one pulling the strings is Jameson Schmidt, the current chairman of Schmidt Group.”
Cyrus’ heart pounded. He held his breath, waiting for Nicholas to continue.
“As you all know, my wife has severe Alzheimer’s. She is already at late-stage now. Three years ago, her condition worsened. I scoured the globe for help, draining my savings, but nothing worked. On the brink of despair, Jameson approached me.”
Nicholas shut his eyes, reliving the bitter memory, “He claimed his superior had a biomedical research organization developing a medication targeting my wife’s net symptoms. Mosgravia’s medical technology is far more advanced. What takes 10 to 20 years here only takes five there!”
Cyrus immediately probed, “What’s the name of this organization?”
“I think it’s called… RC.”
“And who is Jameson’s superior?”
Nicholas shook his head weakly. “I don’t know. That person is even more secretive than Jameson. But could feel his extreme loyalty toward that person. He worships that person like an idol. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d give his life for them.
“Now that I think about it… Jameson seems brainwashed. But what right do I have to comment on that? I myself have been manipulated.”
Cyrus’ gaze remained steady as he urged Nicholas. “Go on.”
“Jameson brought the medicine back to Cyrris. To accelerate data collection, he disguised it as soft drugs and distributed them through gray markets.
“I became his fixer, eliminating any obstacles to the research. I agreed to work for him, hoping to expedite the process and save my wife. But looking back, it was all a terrible mistake.”
Cyrus exposed Jameson’s sinister plan. “Jameson didn’t approach you out of mutual aid. He lured you into a trap. It wasn’t luck that he chose you. It was because you were a useful tool he happened upon.
“Your desperation for a cure made you easily manipulated. Once he achieves his goals, you’ll be discarded. The assassins who attacked you are proof of that.”
Nicholas burst out laughing and shook his head repeatedly.
He wasn’t disagreeing with what Cyrus said. Rather, he was feeling remorse over how much he had sacrificed over three years. He felt like it was not worth it at all. At this very moment, he was extremely regretful and sorry.
