After preparing breakfast, I quickly got ready to go for lectures.
When I was about to leave the house, I saw Jake’s message.
“Sarah, I have a few matters to attend at home. So, I am going there for a few days. Nothing to worry about, but I will be a bit busy. So, I won’t be able to contact you most of the time.”
I read his message over and over again. After everything we discussed yesterday night, this message made me really bothered.
I dialed his phone, but it was switched off.
What the hell!!!
He must be still on the way… Why has he switched off his phone already?
I tried dialing his phone a few more times, like a crazy person. I wanted to contact him somehow. He can’t just put me a message like that and leave, right? He should know that I will worry so much.
If there is nothing to worry about, he won’t leave like this. What has really happened? Has something happened to his mom or dad?
Oh, God, Jake, I hate you for hiding everything from me…
You should have called me and explained to me everything before leaving.
Scolding him from my mind, I walked towards the bus stop.
I saw Luke’s car was parked near the bus stop. This made me even worried. Has something happened to Jake? What is Luke doing here in the morning?
I think he saw me from the side mirror. He waved at me.
I literally ran to his car and opened the passenger door.
“Good morning, Sarah…” he greeted me.
“Good morning. Where is Jake?” I asked, without even waiting to close the door.
“He got some matters to attend at home,” he replied casually.
“What matters? What has happened? Are his mom and dad okay? When did he leave?” I had so many questions to ask.
“God, Sarah… Calm down. There is nothing to worry about. Everyone is okay. His dad needs him, related to a few matters. So, he had to leave early in the morning.”
“But he called me yesterday night. It was near to the dawn when he hung up the phone. He didn’t even mention anything.” I said worriedly.
“I think his dad called him early in the morning. Jake called me around 6, I guess,” he said.
“He called you? He just kept a message for me. Why he couldn’t call me as well?” I asked angrily. Don’t get me wrong. I am not an overprotective girlfriend. However, with all the secrets he is hiding from me, I couldn’t help but worried about him and get angry when he hide more things from me.
“He knows that you ask too many questions… Have you heard about that funny story about Christopher Columbus?” he asked, laughing.
“What? Is this a time to tell a funny story, Luke?” he is making me even angrier.
“No… No… Listen… Then you will understand why he didn’t call you.” he said, still laughing.
I didn’t say anything.
“You know what they say if Columbus had a girlfriend who is similar to today’s girls, he would never be able to discover America because his girlfriend will ask him millions of questions before he set off. She will ask him, why are you going on such a long and risky journey? Who else is going with you? When are you coming back? Will you write to me during the journey? Are there any girls in your crew? Why can’t you send someone else on this journey, do you have to do it by yourself?” he was continuously talking. If it was some other time, he could make me laugh my heart out. But now, I was not in a mood for jokes.
“We ask all these because we love that person. You guys always misunderstand us.” I said, angrily.
“No… No… Dear… We know that. Jake didn’t call you because he didn’t have enough time to explain everything. He didn’t explain anything to me either. He just said he has to go, and he asked me to look after you until he comes back.” Luke said. “I don’t know, Luke… Why he switched off his phone? It is a long journey to reach his home. So, why he couldn’t make me a call during the journey?” I asked.
“His dad has actually sent him a private helicopter. I think he could reach home even before 7 in the morning,” he said casually.
“What! A private helicopter? You say there is nothing to worry about when his dad sent him a private helicopter to reach home as soon as possible.” I yelled at him.
“Oh! God! Sarah, I don’t know how to explain to you. Please stop being worried. You know that he is the only child. When his father needs him, he has to go. They are so damn rich. They don’t need an emergency to use a private helicopter. Just forget about everything and remember that he loves you more than anyone can love a girl…” he said. He seemed to be annoyed.
I looked at him. His face looked so serious. So, I didn’t want to talk any further.

I went to the washroom after the first lecture. Sally was there. She smiled with me as she saw me. But it was not her usual bright smile.
Has Luke talked to her?
I smiled back.
“Hey! you didn’t come for the lecture, right?” I asked.
“Yeah… I was planning to stay home today. But I also wanted to meet you. That’s why I came after the lecture. You don’t have anything until 1, right?” she asked.
I shook my head.
“Then, shall we go to the canteen? I need to talk to you,” she said.
“Okay…”
I followed her to the canteen. Please, God, help me face this situation. I am already worried enough.
She bought two hot chocolates for us. After that, we found an empty table in a corner.
“Sarah, he told me…” she said, after a small pause.
“What?” I said involuntarily. I actually had no idea what Luke might have told her. I wish he talked to me about this before she talks with me.
“That… He is gay…” she said, looking right at my eyes.
I almost spilled the drink… He said that!!!
“He told me that only you and one other person knew about this before me,” she said.
“Sally, please believe me. I didn’t know about that when you first talk to me about him. I only got to know about it after our study session.” I said quickly.
