Back in school, she was a bad student who couldn’t properly grasp Grunslandish. Still, she understood the doctor’s diagnosis upon hearing the term “HIV”. Her slow response was merely out of disbelief.

The doctor attributed her response to the language barrier. So, he repeated the diagnosis in his broken Cyrrisian, “In other words, it’s AIDS.”

This time, Betty completely understood the diagnosis. Following that, she collapsed to the ground and trembled uncontrollably. The doctor tried to help her up from the ground, but her legs were jelly.

Her mind went blank, and she couldn’t take in a word the doctor said. It wasn’t like she could actually hear him anyway.

Betty stumbled listlessly down the corridor, trying hard to figure out where she got AIDS from. Finally, she thought of that day when she enjoyed a one-night stand with a male model in the bathroom of a nightclub lounge.

The model did not use protection and came twice¡ªonce inside her and once on her breasts. Was he the one who spread AIDS to her?

Before that exhilarating night, she had only been staying at home. There could be no one else but him.

“Argh!” She tore the test result into shreds in a dark alleyway. Then, she curled up in a corner, held her head, and wailed. “Why? Why did it turn out this way? Just why?”

She had been kicked out of the Walsh family and lost access to a privileged life. Not only did she lose her hearing in both ears, but she was also diagnosed with AIDS.

She couldn’t see a reason to live, and she wanted death.

In the depths of her despair, she heard footsteps approaching her. A man in leather shoes stopped in front of her.

“Are you Betty Walsh?” The man spoke in Cyrrisian. When Betty heard her mother tongue, she slowly stopped crying and lifted her face.

A stranger in a suit stood in front of her.

“How… How did you know me?” Betty immediately put aside her ego and begged him in tears and snot, “Y-You must be sent by my dad, right? Please, bring me home to Solana City. I do not wish to stay a day longer in this godforsaken place!

“I am really sick right now. It’s a serious illness. I might die if I don’t receive treatment. Dad won’t leave his daughter to die.”

The man replied flatly, “I’m sorry, Ms. Betty. Your dad did not send me.”

Betty collapsed onto the ground again with a look of disappointment and despair.

The man added, “However, someone would like to meet with you.”

Betty had no capacity to think. Hopeless and embattled, she scrambled up from the ground and followed him to a luxury car.

When the car door opened, the first thing that came into her vision was a pair of luxury silver satin stilettos. The ankles of the woman were bony and pristine.

Betty hurriedly flinched when she recalled the shabby outfit she was wearing. The stilettos on that woman were once Betty’s favorite brand, but all Betty could do now was admire them.

“Ms. Betty, please enter the car,” the man casually said to her.

Betty bit the bullet and entered the car. The graceful woman in the car was surprisingly dressed in a white lab coat. Smiling, she radiated warmth and friendliness. Betty instantly took a liking to her.

“Hi, Ms. Betty. Nice to meet you.” The woman politely reached out for a handshake.

Tears streamed down Betty’s cheeks when she shook the woman’s hand. After being bullied by her landlord and neighbors, as well as dealing with the drop in quality of life and the sudden AIDS diagnosis, she felt extremely emotional when accorded respect in the car.

Seeing that, the woman quickly handed her some napkins in a thoughtful move.

“T-Thanks…” Sniffling, Betty asked, “May I know your name? And how did you hear of me?”

The woman beamed. “My last name is Gardner. I’m also from Solana City.”

Gardner?

Betty stared at the smiling face in front of her and sniffled again. She explained, “I. I once knew this annoying bitch who was a Gardner too. But you are way prettier and kinder than she was.”

“Is that so? Well, we’re destined to meet, it seems.” The woman’s smile broadened. “I had heard of you when I was in Solana City. You were living a glorious life as the daughter of Javier Walsh then.

“I ran into you when I was at the hospital. Your current state piqued my interest, so I wanted to check on you. Since we’re both from Solana City, I want to help you if I can.”

The earnest remark sent Betty crying again. After she tired herself out, she clutched the napkin tightly and hissed in spite, “It’s all because of that fool… and Jeremy Walsh!

“Everyone sided with my dimwit sister and joined hands to bully me! They beat me up and robbed me of my hearing. Not only that, I caught AIDS because of them. They wanted me dead!”

The woman frowned. “What about the AIDS?”

Betty cast aside her pride when she finally ran into someone who offered a listening ear. Crying, she vented about the unfortunate events that had befallen her.

The woman patiently heard her out and sighed indignantly. “Gosh, they did you dirty. They made you suffer. How could they be so heartless toward their flesh and blood?

“If I were you, I wouldn’t let this slide. I would do anything to drag that sister to the afterlife with me.”

The woman’s smile grew creepier. “Since your brother did everything for your sister, you may take revenge against him by making her life hellish.”

The woman’s remarks reignited Betty’s desire for revenge. A murderous look appeared in Betty’s eyes as she huffed and puffed.

The woman grinned when Betty turned into a bull in the ring.

“But how do I take my revenge? My family has abandoned me. I can’t even afford a plane ticket back to Solana City. Even if I get home… I bet Jeremy will find out about it by the time I step foot in the airport. I can’t imagine the horrible measure he’d take against me.”

“Ms. Betty, I sympathize with your situation. Hence, I wish to help.” The woman grasped Betty’s hand and gently caressed it. “Don’t worry about the plane ticket. I can sponsor that. As for your return to Solana City, as long as you follow my orders, I can guarantee that your brother won’t get hold of you.”

“I-Is that true?” Betty’s eyes widened in excitement.

In fact, she was skeptical about the entire deal. However, she couldn’t afford to consider the offer, given that she was alone, helpless, and sick with AIDS. She did not mind using any method to get home.

“Ms. Gardner, thank you so much! How can I ever repay your kindness?”

The woman shook her head calmly. She stated, “I hate seeing the innocent bullied and abused. Take your revenge. That’s the best thing you can do to repay my favor.”

A white Bentley rolled to a stop at the entrance to an idyllic residence. With disgust, Sheryl disinfected her hands, which had been in contact with Betty’s skin. After that, she got out of the Bentley and was immediately approached by a shrewd and aloof man.

Remy cast an emotionless look at her. “Dr. Gillis, sir would like to see you.”

Looking tense, she went to meet with Justin. Clad in a dark, modern suit, he sat in front of the long table, working on a landscape painting.

“Sir, it’s time for you to take your meds. I’ll get them ready.” Sheryl was about to prepare the pills for Justin when he calmly addressed her, “Sheryl, you made a move without my approval. You broke the rules.”

Sweating profusely, she immediately apologized, “I’m sorry, sir. I-I just.”

“I know you hold a grudge, but what you have done will only hurt the innocent.” Justin’s brush danced skilfully on the paper. Looking serene, he added, “You’re too impatient. Those who are unable to keep their calm will make mistakes. Besides, you will hurt Lauren with your actions. She is not only Jeremy’s sibling; she’s my sister too.”

Her legs started trembling uncontrollably. Clenching her jaw, she admitted, “I didn’t think it through as I was blinded by my desire to take revenge against Jeremy Walsh. I shall not get involved in Betty Walsh’s life anymore.”

A faint smile appeared on Justin’s pallid face. “What else can you do? You promised to buy her a plane ticket, didn’t you? It’ll look bad to go back on your words.”

Her chest tightened. She realized that she couldn’t keep any secret from Justin. He was aware of what she did, who she met, and what she discussed with the others.

Justin’s expression was unreadable. He warned, “This is your last chance. I do not need unruly people working for me.”

“I will never do this again, sir.” Sheryl hung her head in fear and shame.

At that moment, a document landed by her feet. Justin had tossed it to her. She picked it up and slowly flipped the pages.

Her jaw fell in shock after she skimmed the content. She had to reread it in disbelief.

“Betty is a ticking time bomb. If we use her at the right time, she will cause a huge destruction.

However, we only have one shot at it.” Justin placed his brush on the table and signed the painting in the corner. “Things will go smoothly if she has the courage and competence to do the job. If the plan goes awry, she will be a useless pawn to us. She will then be discarded accordingly.”

Orlander’s act of leaking the news about Freddy and Lauren’s marriage had sent shockwaves through the high society of Solana City. Everyone congratulated the Hodgsons, but they were secretly taunting the family, who had settled for a mentally ill future daughter-in-law just to social climb.

Newton caught wind of the gossip, which added to his opposition to the marriage. When he voiced out his disapproval, Javier would counter him with the way the Harpers had bullied Lauren.

“I vehemently opposed Lauren dating that brat, but you insisted on blessing the wrong match. You sent my beloved daughter to that loser and made her the laughingstock of the city!

“On top of that, you scolded me in front of Jeremy and Landon, ignoring my concerns and humiliating me. Look where your love for your granddaughter led to. You made her suffer.”

Newton frowned deeply and let out a frustrated sigh. “Do you think that, as your father, I can’t read your mind? You never really cared for Lauren. All you care about is your ego. You couldn’t get over being insulted.”

Javier clenched his jaw.

“Do you know Freddy Hodgson well? I picked Landon because firstly, Lauren loves him. Secondly, he’s Jeremy’s best friend from childhood, and we know him better.
