“Hah. Nah, he’s taken the bait.” Jameson chuckled in disdain. “As a man, I could tell what’s on his mind. He caught feelings for you the moment he decided to leave the windbreaker with you.”

Amber’s heart raced when she heard Jameson’s remark. Her hands curled into fists in the windbreaker pockets.

“Well done, Amber. Keep up the good job and make him fall head over heels for you. Then, you will kill him with your own hands.”

Josh Schmidt had committed a long list of crimes over the years. The scandal of Josh forcing female scholarship recipients into prostitution sent a shockwave through the nation. Under immense public scrutiny, the Schmidt Group’s reputation had been ruined.

Victor had assembled the best legal team for his eldest, thinking that Josh would only serve concurrent sentences that added up to at most eight years since there were no murder charges pressed against him. Besides, the legal team would work with the Schmidt Group to reduce Josh’s sentence.

To Victor’s surprise, someone turned in new evidence to the police just five days after Josh’s arrest. On top of that, the accomplice Clarissa mentioned¡ªthe man who had gotten rid of the body after witnessing Josh’s accidental murder¡ªturned himself in at the police station, perhaps due to a guilty conscience or external pressure. He then proceeded to tell on Josh’s criminal actions.

In the face of KS Group and Walsh Group’s threats, the Schmidt Group was the least of his concerns.

Once the president of Schmidt Group and Victor’s favorite son, Josh was now a criminal who was denounced by the public.

Josh had always prided himself as the smartest among his siblings. He had never expected himself to end up in a far worse place than them.

Jameson did not seem at all happy despite the downfall of his archenemy.

“Mr. Schmidt, things might not have unfolded in the way you wanted, but you have avenged your mom. Now that Josh is accused of second-degree murder, he will be thrown behind bars even if Mr. Victor wants to save him. You should be happy about it,” said Carl, in an attempt to comfort Jameson.

“How can I be happy when I haven’t gotten my hands on what I wanted?” Jameson sat in his office, observing the barrage of critical comments toward the Schmidt Group and the free-falling stock price with a glum expression. “I had wanted to use the evidence in exchange for Josh’s stocks.

“With Josh’s stocks, I will surpass Dad as the biggest shareholder of Schmidt Group and officially rule over the company.

“After that, I would expose what Dad had done to Mom, crushing his public image before kicking him out of the company. It was never my intention to make the situation spiral into what it is today. This is just a meaningless pyrrhic victory.”

As the president of Schmidt Group, Jameson would be in charge of taking care of the aftermath. He had planned to manipulate Jeremy and Alyssa into getting rid of Josh for him, but it appeared that all he had done was shoot himself in the foot.

Alyssa had taunted him and warned him not to be greedy. However, it took him and Lily a lot of effort to return to the family business. He had endured humiliation and carefully planned each of his steps to claim back what had belonged to him.

Why couldn’t he be greedy for once? He deserved the best in the world, including Alyssa Taylor! Covered in a cold sweat, Carl watched with bated breath. Josh’s scandal was by far the greatest challenge for the Schmidt Group. Putting aside the falling stock price, the company would not have an easy time doing business and networking with local politicians.

The era of the Schmidts on equal footing with the Walsh’s might come to an end.

Jameson suddenly asked, “By the way, did Amber do anything suspicious in the past few days?”

Carl answered, “Ms. Altman has been at The Millennium all day. She did not do anything else except for work.”

“She’s served me for a long time. It must be difficult for her. Give her a long break.” Jameson tapped the table as he lazily remarked, “If we keep her on a tight schedule, she won’t have the time to meet with those she wanted to see.”

Carl felt his chest tighten. “Mr. Schmidt, are you suspecting Ms. Altman of betrayal?”

Jameson gave him a side-eye. “Would you rather I suspect you?”

Carl was rendered speechless. He hesitatingly stated, “But Ms. Altman has been loyal to you over the years. She gives her heart to you, and she has always given her best in all assignments. If you insist on suspecting her… To be honest with you, as her longtime colleague, I do not think she’s capable of doing that.”

“Did she give her heart to me, now?” Jameson stared icily at Carl with an arched brow. “Stop bluffing me. She has no right to do that.

“She doesn’t even deserve to fall for Axel Whitaker. That dude is Lyse’s brother and a Taylor. She should know her place.

“I’m just curious if Amber would kill Axel for me. Failing to do so, I can’t guarantee that I’d treat her as well as before.”

Carl was filled with shock when he realized that Jameson had only spared Amber to use her to kill Axel. Jameson was the type of man who would not change his mind after he harbored suspicions about someone.

Carl’s phone started vibrating from an incoming call. He answered the call, and his expression promptly fell.

Jameson asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Mr. Schmidt, I just got the news that Mr. Victor had sent the attorneys and his secretary to the detention center. They had a half-hour secret meeting with Josh!” Carl started feeling nervous. “Could Josh have transferred his stocks to¡ª”

“Get the car ready! We’re off to Solana City Private Hospital!” Jameson stormed out of his office with a chilling look in his eyes.

At the same time, Alyssa stood in front of the mirror in the bedroom of Heightsview Villa. She was donned in a chic black suit, her long hair tumbling over her shoulders and her lips a hue of flaming red. She carried herself with an authoritative air, a look of masculine determination etched on her face.

Today was the day she officially presented herself as the KS Group president at the board of directors’ meeting. It also heralded a new era that came with new battles.

“My dear Ms. Alyssa, how are you feeling? Nervous?” Jeremy wrapped his arms around her waist, his lips brushing occasionally against her nape.

Feeling ticklish, she wiggled in his arms, breaking the image of a strong-willed businesswoman. She confessed, “How could I not be? I’ll face a room of snakes. I wonder how they’re going to teach me a lesson.”

“You have nothing to be afraid of with me around.” He sniffed her neck and kissed her smooth skin. Then, he rasped, “If they bully you today, do tell me about it when you’re home today. I’ll back you up.”

“Back me up? I’d count my blessings if you didn’t run me to the ground,” she purred shyly.

Last night, Jeremy, driven mad by his desire, repeatedly took her in various sexual positions that they had never tried before. Despite the embarrassment, she found herself indulging in their intimacy. That morning, he had to carry her to the bathroom because she was too sore to move. In the bathroom, he couldn’t stop himself from making love to her again.

Her casual remark had aroused him again. He carried a look of lust in his eyes as his hand traveled up her body, teasing her. Then, he unfastened two buttons on her shirt.

“N-Not now.” She pressed her hand against his as she trembled.

She could sense his raging boner pressing against her body.

“We still have a lot of time before the meeting.” Nibbling at her reddened ears, he persuaded her in a low voice, “I’ll be gentle. I promise not to tire you out. Lyse, I want to give you some good loving. Is that okay?”

By 10:00 am, Alyssa arrived at the entrance of the KS Group HQ office in her Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy. A few higher-ups had lined up at the entrance and waited for her with bouquets in their hands.

Before Alyssa officially took over the KS Hotel, she was widely perceived as just Winston Taylor’s illegitimate daughter. After going through ups and downs, she made a name for herself in Solana City and the business field.

The first-floor lobby had been carefully decorated. A red carpet was laid out on the floor.

Alyssa was accorded the most formal welcome because everyone held her in great respect.

Back in the car, Sean adjusted his tie in the driver’s seat and glanced at Alyssa through the rearview mirror. He warmly reminded her, “Ms. Alyssa, we’ve arrived.”

She slowly opened her eyes. Sean, suddenly excited, questioned earnestly, “Ms. Alyssa, your cheek blush is really pretty. It’s a shade of reddish pink. Can you share the brand with me? I’ll get one for Taty.”

Her blush deepened when memories of Jeremy plowing her flashed across her mind. Jeremy had caressed her waist lovingly while going at it.

The “cheek blush” was merely the aftereffect of an orgasm. She wanted to blame Jeremy for making her weak.

She hurriedly shifted the conversation. Casting a glance at his necktie, she complimented him, “That’s a neat tie. It must be a gift from Taty, right?”

“M-Ms. Alyssa, how did you know?” Sean’s face reddened.

“That’s because you don’t have good taste in fashion.”

Sean scratched his head with a sheepish chuckle as he stroked his sleeve with a happy look. “Taty made the embroidery on the tie. She even embroidered my initials on the back. It’s one of a kind and my favorite gift.

Nodding, Alyssa grinned. “I can tell that it’s Taty’s work. Knowing you, you would most likely have it framed up. Why did you choose to wear it today?”

“I feel nervous on my first day back to work. Wearing Taty’s creation will calm my nerves. I believe it’s also a good luck charm.”

“That’s right. We need to be careful from now on.” Squinting, she flashed a faint smile. “We are marching into battle soon. There’s an evil beast we need to get rid of.”

With a stern look, Sean handed her the documents he had prepared. The KS Group directors had taken their seats in the meeting room, including Dominic, who looked upset and aggrieved. They engaged in noisy discussions.

Someone opined, “If Mr. Winston is too sick to oversee the company operations, you should be the next candidate in line to take over his role!”

Although the directors answered to Winston, some of them pledged their loyalty to Dominic. They had started to secretly switch their allegiance after a series of events, from Winston’s illness to Jonah’s resignation.

“Gosh, I’m nothing.” Dominic pretended to wave powerlessly. “I might be Winston’s younger brother, but as you can see over the years, I have no say in company matters.

“Even if Winston steps down and Jonah resigns, they have other sons to take over the job. It will not be my turn anytime soon. Please don’t turn me into a laughingstock.”

“Winston’s kids are not fit to helm the company, or else he would have promoted them. They are no match for you!”

“Even if¡ª”

The doors to the meeting room flung open while the men were chatting.

Sean strode into the meeting room with a serious face. Following that, the attendees heard the jarring clicks of heels as though their owner was stepping on everyone’s face. It sent a chill down everyone’s spine.

“I was standing at the door for a while. I didn’t want to interrupt you because you seemed to be having a great time.” Smiling, Alyssa walked into the room. “But the meeting has to go on. Maybe leave the chatting for after the meeting.”

Her presence caught everyone off guard, and the directors quietly replayed their conversations just now out of fear of having blurted out inappropriate remarks.
