Once we finished eating, I laced my fingers with Mara’s and led her out of the restaurant. Cal opened the back door of the limo for us. Gunshots rang out, slicing through the silence of the night. Mara whimpered as my body jumped into motion, shoving her into the limousine and covering her body with mine, shielding her from the heat of the situation.

I could hear Cal bark orders, and then my men returned fire. Cal made quick work of getting in the driver’s seat and driving away. Amongst the chaos that just unfolded, I could hear the irregularity in Marabella’s breathing. “Are you okay, piccola?”, I whispered in her ear, as I waited for us to get a safe distance away. Her face was buried in my chest, her hands gripped onto my back tightly. But, she only nodded in response. “Words, bambina”. Seconds passed with no response.

Luca’s POV

Feeling that we were at a safe distance away, I pulled back, off of her. Mara whimpered as she grasped at my arms. My eyes scanned her body, landing on the ever growing and darkening stain on her upper thigh. My heart stopped in my chest as I realized what it was. “You’ve been hit”, I choked out.

Mara’s eyes stayed locked on mine. “Boss?”, Cal called out cautiously. “Alls well back there?”, he asked. “No! Get us to the hospital now. She was hit”, I bellowed. My hand immediately went to her wound to apply pressure. She whimpered as her small hand wrapped around my wrist. She didn’t seem to be fighting me, just holding on. “Marabella, talk to me, per favore”, I begged, my eyes locked on hers.

Her eyebrows furrowed in concentration as she took a stuttered breath. “It burns”, she rasped. Fuck! “Fuck, I’m so sorry, bambina. The bullet is still in there”, I muttered, trying hard to swallow the lump in my throat. She whimpered in response, her eyes closing momentarily. When she opened her eyes, she stared up at the roof of the car, her jaw clenched tightly.

I know the amount of pain she is in right now. I’ve been shot a few times. Near misses, and twice the bullet was still in me. It’s painful and takes an immense amount of will-power not to pass out from the level of intensity. It takes time for the bullet to cool down after it has been shot.

“I can’t take the burn any more, Luca. Please get it out”, she cried out, her hands gripping my shirt at the forearms. Fuck, I don’t know if I can do that. I’m fucking shaking uncontrollably now as it is. I felt the limousine slow. “I need an ETA, Cal!”, I yelled impatiently. “I’m sorry, boss. Traffic seems to be at a stop, and we are boxed in. I can’t maneuver us out of her yet”, Cal explained, his voice shaking.

My fury started taking over, along with the hairs on the back of my neck. Something isn’t right here. “It’s not his fault”, Mara whispered, stroking my arm, calming me down tremendously. “Please, Luca. I know you can do this. I trust you to do this. Please”, she begged breathlessly.

My instincts kicked in from her plea. Before I knew it, I was blindly reaching for the first-aid kit, under the seat. I grabbed the scissors from the kit and cut a new slit into her dress, giving me access to the wound. Mara groaned. “Bear with me, piccola”, I instructed, as I pulled everything I would need from the kit.

I took a towel and held it against the side of her wound, while preparing to pour alcohol on her wound. I made eye contact with her, “Hold onto me, Mia Bella”, I ordered. My voice broke, betraying my strength. One of Mara’s hands gripped my side, while the other held onto my hand with the towel.

“Just do it, Luca”, she muttered. I blew out a steady breath and poured the alcohol. Mara cried out, both of her hands released me. One of her arms immediately went to her mouth and she bit down, making me panic. I pressed the towel onto her wound, as I used my other hand to free my belt. “Stop biting yourself, piccola”, I commanded. Her eyes flew open and she pulled her arm out her mouth, getting ready to yell at me. I knew she was, I could see it in her eyes. Before she could, I stuffed my half-folded belt between her teeth.

“Bite”, I said sternly. Mara bit down and nodded at me in thanks. “You’re welcome, piccola. But now you have another wound that I need to treat”, I scolded, trying so hard to be tough in this moment. Mara must have lost a substantial amount of blood because her eyes fluttered closed as she spoke softly. “You can spank me for it later”, she uttered. I groaned internally, “Don’t worry, gattina (kitten), I will”, I promised, as I pulled the hemostats out of the first aid kit, sterilizing them with one hand.

“You have to hold still for me, bambina. This is going to be the worst part”, I said softly. Mara swallowed hard as she gripped the door handle above her head. She nodded her head in understanding and readiness. I raised up on my knees from my position on the floorboard in front of her.

I sat the hemostats on her stomach and pulled the belt from her mouth. I claimed her lips with mine, kissing her deeply, releasing my fear and conveying my love. I have to be able to do this properly. I immediately put the belt back into her mouth when I pulled away.

“You are doing great, principessa”, I praised, as I picked the hemostats back up. My heart raced as I pulled the towel back from her wound. “I’m so sorry”, I uttered, with a headshake, as I dug into the wound in search of the bullet. Mara’s screams were muffled by the belt, but the sounds were unmistakeable. I found the bullet in record time and grabbed ahold of it.

I gently and carefully began to pull it free. Mara’s body twitched as she fought full out thrashing. I placed my hand on her lower stomach, half of my hand resting over her panty-clad mound. “You are doing absolutely wonderful, baby girl. But, I really need you to stay still for this part”, I murmured, hating myself at that moment. She whimpered, as tears slid down her cheeks, slicing at my chest even more. Especially since I can’t wipe them away right now.

I focused back on pulling the bullet out. With a steady hand, I extracted the bullet and immediately placed the towel over her gushing wound. Fuck, I really hope I didn’t hit anything. I placed the hemostats that still clutched the bloody bullet on top of the first-aid kit.
