At that moment, the sound of uneven footsteps drew near. A man’s voice boomed, “Jeremy, what exactly are you doing?”
Jeremy looked up, his expression darkening.
Javier glowered at his trouble-causing son with a scowl. Following behind him closely was his secretary
Rory Odon, some bodyguards, and Betty, who put on a sour face.
Betty had initially been reluctant to visit Sophia at the police station. She had not stepped out of
Seaview Manor since the horseracing event, where Sophia had brought shame to her.
She refrained from checking social media or watching the TV. When she skimmed through her Twitter feed, she noticed people laughing at Sophia. On top of that, she had muted the group chats with the
Solana City socialites, whose members relentlessly laughed at Sophia and herself.
One of them wrote, “How I pity Madam Sophia. I bet Mr. Javier hasn’t satisfied her in a while. Why else would she touch herself with such enthusiasm?”
“I guess middle-aged women who have given birth are no use for men anymore. I couldn’t believe the same fate befell even the ex-celebrity Madam Sophia.”
“That has nothing to do with her age! If I were her husband, I would have been so ashamed of her for taking drugs and her bladder control issues. She’s a stain on their family name.”
“Betty is so pitiful. Look, she’s still single. After her mom’s scandal and public arrest, I worry that no family would want to propose a marriage. Who’d want to embarrass themselves?”
The socialites, who had acted friendly with Betty, were mean and harsh when it came to laughing at her expense. She scoffed at their so-called “sisterhood”.
Still, Betty knew she had to feign concern about Sophia. Regardless of Javier’s stance about Sophia,
Betty had to put on an image as a caring daughter to make Lauren look bad in comparison.
On her way into the police station, she witnessed Jeremy hitting Simon and the words that came out of their mouths.
Observing Jeremy’s dramatic antics, she couldn’t suppress a silent snicker, thinking that Jeremy’s continued theatrics would likely result in him losing the company presidency when their father reached the limit of his patience.
“Can’t you tell what I’m doing here?” Jeremy retorted with an icy squint.
“Have you thought about your social standing? You’re at a police station. You’re no different than a hooligan if you lay a finger on him. How tactless and brash of you!” Javier growled.
Although Javier’s attitude had softened toward Jeremy after grappling with the guilt of wronging Anne, he now started disliking Jeremy for his rash behavior over Alyssa.
Cyrus and his colleagues shook their heads in disdain when they heard Javier’s ridiculous statement, which got them gossiping.
“Is that the attitude of the Walsh Group’s chairman? How could he qualify for running the group? I’m speechless.” “Right? An assault is certainly wrong, but he only cares about the reputational loss. He has a very peculiar moral compass, it seems.”
“The rich are the parasites of the society. They’re helpless!”
Javier overheard the murmurs, which only fueled his anger and dislike of his son.
Jeremy returned to Alyssa’s side without hesitation and held her hand firmly, declaring, “I know my place in society.”
He turned to her and cast an affectionate gaze. “As Alyssa’s man, I could not turn a blind eye after
Simon Lynch attacked her.”
Alyssa’s heart raced. She wiggled her hand in his grasp.
Meanwhile, Javier stared agape at Jeremy and seethed, “You¡ª”
“Would you stay silent if someone insulted your woman publicly?” Jeremy smirked. “Oh, right. You care about your image the most, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you do nothing about it.”
The onlookers drew a deep breath when the battle unfolded between father and son.
Just as Javier was rendered speechless by Jeremy’s pointed accusations, Betty stepped in to speak up for her father. “Jeremy, mind your attitude when speaking to Dad. Beating someone up is wrong and damages the company’s reputation. Dad is right to call you out. Are you willing to risk your reputation for a woman?”
Alyssa disliked Betty criticizing her man but felt it wasn’t her place to intervene in their family matters, even after she and Jeremy had pledged their love to each other.
Alyssa worried that her involvement might exacerbate the already strained relationship between Javier and Jeremy. She wasn’t worried about Javier’s perception of her; she just refused to make things more difficult for Jeremy within the Walsh Group.
“I think it’s Sophia who should worry about her reputation,” Jeremy dismissed Betty’s statement without even looking at her. “I’ll advise you to behave. If you insist on clearing your mom’s name, I will see to it that you join her in jail.”
His warning was directed at both Betty and Javier, making it clear that he wouldn’t allow them to rescue
Sophia.
“Jeremy, how could you¡ª” Betty stomped in anger and tugged at Javier’s arm, pleading tearfully, “Dad, how could Jeremy say that? It is my mom and your wife he’s talking about! I think he wants me dead, too. What have I done to him? Who’s the evil one here?”
Javier was disoriented and irritated by her tantrum as he struggled to free himself from her grasp.
Simon seized the opportunity upon seeing the fallout. Wiping away his nosebleed, he approached
Javier with a dejected look and appealed, “Mr. Javier, I’ve given my all to you and the Walsh Group, which I’m sure you know.
“Jeremy might hold a grudge against your wife, which is not my concern, but he released his frustration on me when I was only doing my job. This is so unfair to me, Mr. Javier!”
Javier flinched at the sight of Simon’s bloodied face and replied flatly, “Mr. Lynch, I’m sorry for that. I’ll take care of the matter.”
At that point, Jeremy was incredibly disgusted with his family. He simply said, “Lyse, let’s go home,”
refusing to share the same space with his father. Under everyone’s scrutiny, he took Alyssa’s hand and left the police station.
Pausing briefly as he walked past Simon, he remarked, “Reach out to my secretary for the medical compensation. I rarely resort to violence, so be sure to ask for a higher figure.”
Simon trembled in anger, which tugged on his wound, almost making him yelp in pain.
Alyssa stared straight at Jeremy’s broad shoulders and his arm as she quietly followed him. It was anastonishing sight for Cyrus, who had always regarded Alyssa as a strong woman. He was, therefore, in disbelief when he saw her gentle and submissive attitude when she was with Jeremy.
Suddenly, Javier called out to her, “Ms. Alyssa.”
Jeremy and Alyssa stood still. Jeremy’s body tensed as he pulled her into a protective hug as if he were worried someone might take her away.
“What’s the matter, Mr. Javier?” Alyssa asked calmly.
“Can you confidently swear that you have nothing to do with Sophia’s video, her arrest, and Dr.
McAlister’s testimony?” Javier seethed and interrogated her.
Frowning, Jeremy insisted, “Just come to me if you have any questions. Don’t make things difficult for
Lyse.”
However, Alyssa smiled brightly and owned up to it, “Of course, I have everything to do with those incidents.”
This led to astonishment among the Walsh’s. Even Jeremy was taken aback by her honesty.
Betty immediately took the opportunity to accuse her, “So, Alyssa Taylor, it was you who plotted against my mom! I knew she was innocent. This was all your doing!
“How can a woman be as malicious as you? After causing trouble in our family, you went on to seduce
Jeremy, using him to achieve your goals. You’re nothing but bad news!”
Just as Cyrus was about to speak up for Alyssa, Alyssa casually replied, “Mr. Javier, Dr. McAlister indeed worked for me.”
“But no one has forced your wife to meet with Dr. McAlister for drugs. She had developed an addiction and took the risk of dealing drugs with him at the horseracing event. The decision to step into the trap I set was entirely hers.”
Having stated this, Alyssa exited the police station alongside Jeremy, who draped his arm around her shoulder.
Seeing that, Betty anxiously yelled at Javier, “Dad, are you letting her leave just like that? She got Mom in trouble!”
Rory, unable to contain himself, calmly took a jab at Betty. “You’ll need evidence to support your claims against Ms. Alyssa. If you can’t, you need to be careful with what you say lest she sues you for slander.”
Betty glared at Rory while Javier turned his icy gaze to Cyrus, demanding, “Mr. Cyrus, I’d like to meet with Captain Holt.”
Cyrus stood with his back against the wall and crossed his arms on his chest. “He’s not around. His superior asked for him.”
“Could you please call him? Tell him to return immediately to meet with me.”
“I’m really sorry. As an ordinary policeman, I do not have the right to summon Captain Holt.” Yawning,
