Gavin said, “If you rely on me, it’s still you relying on yourself.”

“Huh?” Britney looked puzzled.

Gavin said, “The only reason I let you rely on me is because you’ve got the skills and the strength to deserve it.”

Britney chuckled, “You really know how to talk, don’t you?”

Gavin replied, “I’m just telling the truth.”

They had a great talk over dinner.

After the meal, Britney started to clear the table.

Gavin caught her wrist, stopping her. “Leave it. The housekeeper will take care of it tomorrow.”

“I was just going to put them in the sink,” Britney replied.

“No need,” Gavin said, shaking his head.

“Alright then,” Britney agreed, giving in.

Gavin took her hand and led her to the couch, sitting down beside her. He gazed at her intently.

His gaze was so intense that Britney’s heart thudded wildly in her chest.

Gavin then reached into his pocket and pulled out a black velvet box. He flipped it open, and inside was a massive diamond ring.

“Britney, will you marry me?” Gavin remarked, his voice thick with emotion.

He dropped to one knee.

Britney was completely stunned.

Her mind buzzed faintly.

She had thought that Gavin was pulling all this just to get her to be his girlfriend.

To her surprise, he went down on one knee and proposed.

She started to panic, frantically waving her hands. “Gavin, no. I just…”

“Britney!” Gavin caught her hand, his voice low and insistent. “Stop pretending you don’t care. I know you have feelings for me.”

Britney fell silent.

‘There’s no way I can deny it,’ she thought helplessly.

Gavin added, “You’re afraid that I’ll betray you as Soren did, right? But if I were the type of guy who messes around with people’s feelings, would I still be single?”

Chapter S08

“I don’t know,” Britney replied.

She really didn’t know.

Back then, she used to think she was a good judge of character.

However, she never expected that her boyfriend and best friend would betray her together.

It turned out her instincts about people weren’t that great after all.

Now she couldn’t even bring herself to trust herself, so how could she possibly trust anyone else?

Gavin’s grip on the diamond ring tightened slightly. “So, you’re turning me down?”

The had

He had thought that since Britney didn’t resist his kiss, it meant that she had accepted him.

But he never expected her to turn him down like this.

Just as he thought, Britney said, “I’m sorry.”

After saying that, she stood up and walked back to the master bedroom.

Gavin stayed there, still half-kneeling on the floor. Bitterness flooded his lips.

After a long while, the phone in his pocket beeped, and he slowly stood up from the ground.

His left leg was completely numb from kneeling for so long.

The message was from Cameron. [Gavin, did it work?]

Gavin replied: [She turned me down.]

Cameron: [See? The usual tricks just don’t work on her.],

Gavin: [Cam, I don’t want to lie to her anymore. Let’s just wait a bit longer.]

Gavin held his phone. Memories of seeing Britney in the hospital a few days ago replayed in his mind.

He knew she cared about him.

There was no rush.

He had been single for so many years.

It wouldn’t hurt to wait a little longer.

Not wanting to put any more pressure on Britney, Gavin simply turned and left.

Britney stayed in her room for two hours, but sleep just wouldn’t come. Outside, however, there was not a sound.

She hesitated for a long time before finally deciding to go out and have a look.

But when she stepped out, she found that Gavin was already gone.

She walked over to the sofa, picked up the bouquet of freshly bloomed red roses, and lowered her head to gently breathe in their scent.

‘Marriage… It’s just way too fast,’ she thought.

If Gavin had just asked her to be his girlfriend, maybe she would’ve agreed.

She was really struggling with this.

It all came down to a single moment of hesitation.

The next day.

As usual, Gavin sat on the sofa in the evening, waiting for Britney to get off work so that he could have dinner with her.

It was as if nothing had happened the day before.

They slipped right back into their old, uneventful routine.

A month later.

At the dinner table, Britney said, “Gavin, I want to move back to my own place.”

Gavin looked up at her. “Isn’t it nice living here?”

Britney replied, “I just feel more comfortable in my own place.”

It was nice there, but it was never really her home.

Gavin’s heart suddenly clenched, and he felt like he couldn’t breathe.

It had been months.

Britney had already been living there for several months.

Isn’t it supposed to take just twenty-one days to form a new habit? Why can’t she?’ Gavin thought, frustration welling up inside.

He wasn’t sure whether she was going to move out or leave him.

He had already been patient enough.

He had given her all the freedom she could possibly want.
