But no matter how many times he got beaten up, Eddie always came back.
As a man himself, Baron could tell Eddie was truly serious about Vicki.
But for Baron to truly accept him without any resentment… That was something he just couldn’t do.
Baron was still torn up inside, unable to make up his mind, when Vicki finally woke up.
“Vicki, how are you feeling?” he asked, his voice full of concern.
When Vicki saw him, she didn’t say a word. Instead, she turned her face away.
Baron was left speechless.
Then, Rachel patted him on the shoulder.
Baron got the hint and stepped aside.
Rachel reached out and gently touched Vicki’s forehead. Thankfully, it felt normal. “Vicki, are you okay? Are you feeling unwell?” she asked.
Vicki shook her head slightly.
“Vicki, you lost a lot of blood and almost died. Don’t ever do something so foolish again,” Rachel said.
Vicki bit her lip.
She never actually meant to end her own life.
She just wanted to give Baron a scare, but she misjudged her strength, and the cut went too deep.
Of course, she wasn’t about to admit that.
It was better to make Baron and Rachel believe that she really wanted to die.
Seeing her like this, Baron felt a mix of anger, frustration, and heartache.
In the end, he finally compromised. “Fine. I won’t stand in your way anymore. You’re free to be with whoever you want. Just don’t come to me when things go wrong.”
With that, Baron turned and left the hospital room.
Vicki stared blankly at the white ceiling. After a long pause, she finally asked, “Rachel, what did he say?”
Rachel smiled, “He said he’s okay with you and Eddie being together now.”
Vicki’s eyes reddened.
After Baron left the hospital room, he immediately called Eddie.
Eddie already knew about Vicki’s suicide attempt, and he was practically losing his mind with worry. But no matter what he did, he just couldn’t get a chance to see her.
When he finally got Baron’s call, Eddie was still in a daze.
Ever since he heard about Vicki trying to take her own life, it felt like his heart was being ripped apart. He’d racked his brains for ways to see her, going two whole days without a single minute of sleep.
Camilla was so afraid he’d break down that she actually knocked him out cold just to force him to rest.
Now, Eddie had just come to.
Baron got straight to the point. “Eddie, get your ass to the hospital right now.”
Eddie blinked in disbelief. “You’re letting me see Vicki?”
Baron replied, “She even went so far as to kill herself just to be with you. Tell me, does it even matter if I object anymore?
“I’m sorry. This is all my fault,” Eddie said, his heart aching.
If he didn’t have that shameful past, with their families’ similar backgrounds, Baron wouldn’t have opposed him being with Vicki
And Vicki wouldn’t have ended up hurting herself just to be with him.
It was all his fault.
He was the original sin.
“Quit your whining and get over here. From now on, Vicki’s your responsibility. But if you ever hurt her, I’ll skin you alive,” Baron threatened.
“That’ll never happen,” Eddie said, his voice resolute.
Eddie rushed to the hospital as quickly as he could and made a beeline straight for Vicki’s room.
When he saw Vicki lying there, so much thinner than before, his heart shattered at the sight.
“Vicki!” Eddie dropped to his knees at her bedside.
“Eddie!” Vicki immediately threw herself into his arms. “I finally get to see you again.”
“You silly girl…” Eddie held her tightly. “Why did you have to be so reckless?”
Vicki looked up and saw Baron standing at the foot of the bed, arms crossed, silently watching the two of them, his expression unreadable.
She didn’t respond.
Eddie cupped her face, his eyes red with emotion. “Vicki, do you have any idea how much it hurt me to watch you fall into that frozen lake years ago? My heart almost shattered. How could you even think about hurting yourself like this?”
Vicki froze.
Years ago?
The time she fell into the frozen lake?
“How do you know I fell into the frozen lake?” Vicki asked, stunned.
Baron looked at Eddie with confusion.
Eddie said, “A few years ago, you suddenly went cold on me and rode off alone, I quietly followed you and saw you fall through the ice
Vicki’s eyes lit up with surprise. “So you’re the one who saved me?”
She remembered hearing someone calling her name in her dazed state. She hadn’t imagined it after all. Eddie nodded softly.
Eddie nodded softly.
Vicki broke into a smile. “It was you! Eddie, we searched everywhere for whoever saved me but never found anyone!”
Eddie smiled, “Because I didn’t want you to know.”
Vicki looked puzzled. “Why not?”.
Eddie’s voice was quiet. “I figured you wouldn’t want to know you were rescued by someone you hated.”
Vicki glanced toward Baron at the doorway. “I never hated you. Baron was the one who wouldn’t let me see you.”
She had never disliked Eddie. In fact, she’d always thought well of him.
Eddie fell silent. He turned to look at Baron. ‘So this was why Vicki had suddenly grown cold toward me back then?”
Baron immediately glared at him. “Think about your reputation at the time. Of course I wouldn’t let my sister get close to you!”
Eddie nodded. “I know. It was my fault.” He understood Baron’s reasoning.
“Good that you know.” Baron’s tone softened considerably.
After all, Eddie had once saved Vicki’s life. Baron had planned to reward whoever saved Vicki with a fortune. He never expected it would be Eddie.
Life had come full circle. Baron could accept this.
“Take care of Vicki.” Baron turned and left the hospital room.
Vicki squeezed Eddie’s hand excitedly. “Eddie, Baron doesn’t object to us being together anymore.”
“Yeah.” Eddie gently ruffled her hair. “But Vicki, you’ve been through so much.”
Eddie knew the truth clearly. If Vicki hadn’t “attempted suicide,” Baron would never have given in. At least not this quickly.
“I’m okay.” Vicki rested her head against Eddie’s shoulder. She had won her battle.
Eddie’s gaze fell on the bandaged wrist of her left hand. “Does it hurt?” The concern was written all over his face.
“Yeah, it hurts.” Vicki nodded honestly.
