Although she felt it was unlikely that Zeke was the mastermind, she couldn’t think of anyone else besides him.

Seeing Danika racking her brain over the matter, Eustace got up and leaned her back against the hospital bed.

“Rest well.I’ll investigate this matter.Although those people are dead, we can still find out their identities and get some clues.”

Danika murmured in agreement, not saying anything else.

She needed to get well soon, as there were many things she needed to handle personally.

Thinking of that, she closed her eyes to sleep but opened them again the next moment.

“You can go back now.I’m fine, so you don’t need to stay here and watch over me.”

Eustace had as much to do as she did, and she felt guilty that he’d been staying with her all night.

Smiling and shaking his head, Eustace insisted on staying.

“I feel more at ease watching over you.”

“Eustace—“

“Go to sleep. There’s a couch over there.I’ll sleep for a while after you fall asleep,” Eustace said.

Since Eustace was so insistent, Danika had no choice but to give up on persuading him to go back. She was well aware that she couldn’t make Eustace change his mind.

With that, she closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.

After Danika was sound asleep, Eustace quietly left the ward and sat on the bench outside the door, dialing a number on his phone.

“Look into this.I want to know who these people are.”

If Danika were awake at that moment, she would be surprised by Eustace’s cold and harsh tone.

After all, she hadn’t seen this side of him in along time.

The next morning, Danika woke up very early.

She was already feeling much better and felt that she could be discharged from the hospital.

However, since Evan was still in the ICU, she wasn’t in a rush to leave.

She still needed to wait for him to wake up.

Whether she was a patient or a doctor while doing that didn’t make much of a difference.

Just then, Eustace came in with breakfast.

“It’s good that you’re awake.Come and have some food.”

“Thank you,” Danika thanked him graciously.

“Danika, you don’t have to be so formal with me.”

Although Eustace had reminded her countless times, Danika still found it hard to completely forego all forms of courtesy when conversing with him.She felt a little embarrassed and apologized, “Sorry, it just came out that way naturally.”

“It’s okay.Just be mindful next time.”

Eustace hoped Danika could treat him like family; there was no need to be so distant when interacting with a family member.

As Danika ate her breakfast, she couldn’t help but wonder when Evan would wake up.

Just then, there was a knock on the door of her ward.

Vincent walked in and announced, “Mr.Quincey and Miss Zellweger, Mr.Clarke has woken up.”

Upon hearing that, Danika forgot about her breakfast and immediately got up to head toward the intensive care unit.

Eustace, on the other hand, had a long face that gave off a hint of gloominess.

“My.Quincey?”

Vincent called out to him, feeling a little nervous when he saw that he hadn’t moved from his seat.

Taking a deep breath, Eustace kept his emotions in check. He consoled himself that it was normal for Danika to care about Evan more right now, as he was her savior.

Despite having comforted and mentally prepared himself, Eustace couldn’t help but feel jealous when he saw Danika sitting by Evan’s bedside and patiently comforting him.

Don’t Want You to Leave Me

In the ward, Danika sat quietly beside the hospital bed without saying a word.

Evan had remained silent since he woke up, not even saying a word to Danika when he saw her.

Seeing him like that, Danika felt worried.

“Evan…” she said.

“Don’t worry.I’m fine,” Evan said with a smile.

Even at that moment, he could still smile and tell Danika that he was okay, not wanting her to worry too much.

“Fine? How could he be fine? He has to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. No one would be able to accept such an outcome calmly!” Danika exclaimed inwardly.

“We’re already contacting the best doctors for you. There must be a way,” Danika said, worried he was suppressing his emotions.

It was better to let it out at times like this instead of bottling it all up. Hearing her say “we,”

Evan knew she was referring to herself and Eustace. For some reason, he felt particularly displeased upon hearing that.

“Danika, if I have to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair, will you stay by my side?” Evan suddenly asked as he looked at her.Danika was stunned by his words.

Even Eustace, who was standing outside by the door, was visibly shaken.

He wanted to barge in and ask Danika to refuse Evan’s request, but he knew it would be futile. If Danika decided to say “yes,” he couldn’t stop her even if he went in.

Danika pursed her lips and looked at Evan.

“Evan, are you saying that—“

“I just don’t want you to leave me. I’ve become useless. If you leave me too, I don’t know how I can live,”

Evan declared, smiling bitterly.

Danika didn’t say anything. She understood what Evan meant.

Even though she wanted to refuse him, upon meeting his sad eyes, she knew she couldn’t bring herself to do it. He became like this because he saved her.

Without him, it could have been her sitting in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

She couldn’t be so selfish as to deny his request.

“Haha.I’m just kidding.Don’t worry about it.Just pretend I said nothing—“

“Evan,” Danika cut him off.

“As long as you’re bound to the wheelchair, I’ll care for you every single day.Don’t worry.I won’t leave you.”

Evan was surprised. He didn’t expect Danika to agree so quickly.

Outside the ward, Eustace seemed to lose all his strength in an instant.

He understood what Danika’s words implied and found it hard to accept.

They were about to progress to the next level, but now, because of Evan, fate forcibly pulled them apart once more.

When Danika came out of the ward, she immediately saw Eustace sitting on the bench.

He sat there with his hands holding his head, looking very distressed, and that made Danika feel sad.

She surmised he must have heard what she said in the ward just now.

“Eustace,” Danika called out to him.

“I’m hungry.Let’s go eat breakfast.Because Evan woke up suddenly, she hadn’t finished her breakfast before hurrying over. Now that she was done checking on him, she felt a bit hungry.Eustace looked up at Danika and tried to say something, but in the end, he just nodded and said, “Okay.”

Inside the ward, the two of them silently ate breakfast without saying a word.

Danika couldn’t quite taste the sumptuous breakfast that should have been delicious. She put down her spoon and looked at the person next to her.

“Did you hear what I said to Evan just now?”

“No.”

Eustace shook his head.He could pretend he didn’t know anything as long as he denied hearing anything she’d said to Evan.

“Eustace, don’t lie to yourself.”

Danika was sure that Eustace had heard it; otherwise, he wouldn’t have reacted like that.
