“Have some apples.” Danika proceeded to put some apple slices onto Eustace’s plate.
Eustace looked at the apples on his plate and couldn’t help but comment, “Are you trying to hint at something?”
Danika was speechless. She just thought that Eustace should have some fruit since he didn’t eat them much on normal days.
What could she imply? Did he think she was implying that he was the apple of her eye?
“You decide whether you want to eat it or not.I don’t care,” she said, thinking it was his problem that he was a picky eater if the food wasn’t to his liking.
The corner of Eustace’s eyes scrunched up as he smiled; he was obviously teasing Danika.
“Well, I can’t refuse the food you’ve served me, can I?”
“Hmph! “
Danika snorted coldly, looking vexed.
Max and Jade looked at them helplessly.
“Can you two be more considerate of our feelings?” Max asked.
Then, he couldn’t help but add, “Which of us is the actual couple here?”
Danika coughed dryly and moved toward the edge of her seat to put some distance between herself and Eustace.
“You’re just purposely proving a point and being in denial by doing that,” Max pointed out.
Eustace just smiled and didn’t comment on it.
It was only a matter of time before he and Danika became an actual couple.
The four of then shared laughs and good humor as they dined, but at the study on the second floor of Gilbert’s villa, the conversation between Gilbert and Zack wasn’t going well.
Gilbert was solemn as he said, “Zack, I remember making myself very clear the last time. Why haven’t you broken up with that woman yet?”
Not only had he not broken up with her, but he’d also brought her over that day.
Gilbert wondered if his little brother had lost his mind.
“Gilbert, I’ve read through all the information you gave me.I know that Janet has made many mistakes in the past, but she’s changed now. She’s no longer the person she was before,” Zack explained.
When he first saw the information, he was angry and thought that Janet was promiscuous when it came to relationships.
But later, he began to understand her bit by bit.
Being born into a poor family, Janet desperately wanted to escape and live a better life, and there was nothing wrong with that.
Although the path she initially took was wrong, she didn’t actually hurt anyone.
Zack believed that she should be forgiven.
So, he didn’t even mention the matter of Janet’s past to her, thinking that as long as Gilbert got to know her better, he would see her good side and choose to overlook her past mistakes.
“Zack! Listen to what you’re saying!”
At that moment, Gilbert felt that Zack could be the death of him.
“Come on.Janet is a good person.I’m sure she realized how wrong she’d been in the past.Let’s give her another chance,” he pleaded.
It wasn’t just for the sake of his happiness, but also for Janet’s.
Am I That Horrible?
Seeing how insistent Zack was, Gilbert didn’t know what to say.
“Since you insist, then do as you please.I’ve done my part and said what needs to be said.If you get hurt in the future, that’s on you. However, there’s one thing I can tell you clearly—I won’t accept her.Of course, you probably don’t care. So, please don’t bring her to my house in the future. If you two are inseparable, then you don’t need to drop by from now on either.”
Gilbert’s stance was clear as day, and Zack’s face became increasingly grim as he took in his brother’s words.
“Do you really not want to give her a chance?” Zack asked.
He didn’t understand why Gilbert, who’d always been nice and friendly to everyone, was so skeptical of Janet.
Looking at Zack with a serious expression, Gilbert said, “She doesn’t need me to give her a chance. No matter what she’s done in the past, I can ignore it, but I won’t accept that kind of woman marrying you.Do you understand?”
He couldn’t care less about such matters, but Zack was his brother.
Unfortunately, Zack didn’t understand Gilbert’s reasoning.
“Why do you always do this? You break couples up just because you can’t bear to see them get together,” Zack said.
“What did you say?”
Gilbert couldn’t believe it.He thought his ears were deceiving him.
“Was I wrong?”
Zack didn’t flinch and stared back at Gilbert squarely.
“You wanted to break Danika and Eustace up before, and now you want me to break up with Janet. Is it because you can’t be happy yourself, so you don’t want us to be happy either?”
Gilbert was furious! The person before him right then seemed alien and unfamiliar. He couldn’t believe that those words came out of Zack’s mouth.
“I think I understand why Danika doesn’t like you.If it were me, I wouldn’t like you either!”
Gilbert slapped Zack just as he was done with his tirade.
“Get out! Get out right now!” Gilbert fumed.
“Fine, I’ll leave!”
Zack shouted back angrily. He wasn’t exactly someone who had a mild temperament, either.
Zack turned and walked out of the study, heading toward the kitchen downstairs.
Gilbert stood frozen in place in the study. He’d exerted all his strength when he slapped Zack, and he was still shaking from anger.
The worst thing was the damage caused by what Zack had just said to him.
The words reverberated in his mind, haunting his thoughts.
“He said he doesn’t like me.Am I really that horrible?”
Gilbert started to doubt himself. He always considered himself a big brother who took care of his younger siblings. But look at the state of things now…It seemed that no one would listen to him anymore.
First, it was Danika, and now, Zack.
Gilbert laughed bitterly. It seemed to him that he had failed as a big brother.
Janet was cooking in the kitchen downstairs.
When she saw Zack come in, she smiled and said, “Have you finished talking with your brother? It’s time for dinner.”
“There’s no point staying here. We’re not welcome,” Zack said, infuriated.
Janet was startled by how irritated he seemed. She’d never seen him that enraged in their entire relationship.
“Sorry.It’s just…”
Zack quickly apologized, realizing that he’d unwittingly snapped at Janet.
Janet didn’t say anything and hugged him.
“It’s okay.I’m not angry.”
Zack hugged her back tighter.
“Thank you.”
“Gilbert…how can I let go of such a good girl?” he questioned internally.
After a while, the two separated, and Janet gazed up to the second floor, not quite knowing what to say.
“Um…What did Gilbert say?” she asked tentatively.
Zack had calmed down by then.He decided to leave the villa with Janet.
“It’s okay.Let’s go.We’ll come and visit him another day.”
“Okay.”
Janet nodded. She didn’t ask what had happened and just silently followed Zack as they left.
Worry for Zack’s Future
From the window of his study, Gilbert watched as Zack and Janet left.He then picked up his phone to call Danika.
‘Danika, I won’t meddle in Zack’s affairs anymore, and you’d better not either. Some people just don’t learn their lessons until they pay a price for it.”
