“How did it happen so suddenly?”
It hadn’t been long since the surgery. As long as Harvey took good care of himself, he shouldn’t have been in his current situation.
Christopher didn’t answer. Instead, he said, ‘Grandpa wants to see you.”
It caught Danika by surprise as she was not very close to Harvey. Shouldn’t he be asking to see his children or grandchildren instead of her?
“He probably has something to say to you, probably related to your identity, “
Christopher guessed.
Danika was a little surprised. Wasn’t her identity already discovered? What else could
Harvey have to say?
Danika followed Christopher to Harvey’s ward, questions swarming in her mind.
Outside the ward, many Spade family members were waiting for Harvey’s call, but to their surprise, he called for an outsider instead of them. Hence, they cast her hostile looks when she passed by them.
However, they didn’t dare to voice their thoughts. For one, it was Harvey’s order. In addition, they couldn’t afford to offend Danika.
After Danika entered the ward, Christopher stood outside the door instead of following her in.
“Mr. Spade,” Danika called softly as she walked up to him.
Harvey was wearing an oxygen mask and looked very pale, which was a sign of his poor condition. Noticing her presence, he opened his eyes.
Seeing that it was her, he revealed a small fine. “Danika, you’re here.”
“Yes. Well, everything will be fine.’
Danika knew she was lying to herself but didn’t know what else to say.
Harvey smiled, but perhaps because of his condition, his smile looked strained. “You don’t need to comfort me. I know my body’s limits.”
Danika opened her mouth but ultimately didn’t say any words of comfort.
“I wanted to talk to you about your mother,” Harvey said without beating around the bush.
Your Mother
“My mother?” Danika was stunned for a moment. She even wondered if she had heard correctly. Why would Harvey talk to her about her mother?
It was difficult for her to form a response. Since she returned to the Zellweger family and learned of her true identity, everyone’s attention had been focused on her father.
Because Graham was the head of the Zellwegers, she had become a daughter of the
Zellwegers, and thus, no one cared who her mother was.
Harvey was the first person to bring up her mother.
“Yes, your mother,” Harvey confirmed and continued, “Perhaps you don’t care who your mother is and think it doesn’t matter, but I still want to talk to you about her.”
He knew that if he didn’t speak up now, he might not have the chance to do so again, and Danika might never know who her mother really was.
“No, you’re wrong,’ Danika interrupted Harvey and looked at him seriously. “I do care.”
Of course, she cared. That was her mother.
Although she had never met her, she had heard Graham talk about what had happened in the past. She knew her mother had left because she had no choice but to protect her.
When the topic of her mother was brought up, Danika’s tender heart would start longing for her.
Hearing her words, Harvey’s face lit up with a smile of relief. “Really? That’s great.
Your mother would be very happy to hear that.”
Danika did not interrupt him and listened as Harvey continued, “Your mother’s name is
Lynette Bell. She’s a very gentle and beautiful woman.
“Your father was not the first person to meet your mother. It was I who brought her to
Bardoff City. I wanted to introduce her to my son. Although she didn’t have the best background or connections, I had a good feeling about her and thought that if my son could marry her, he would be happy.
“However, fate is a strange thing. Your mother and father met each other at an event, and they fell deeply in love. Although I was upset that your mother didn’t take a liking to my outstanding son, I didn’t do anything because your mother was too perfect, and
I couldnt bear to do anything to her. I could only watch her fall in love with Graham.”
Sighing deeply, Harvey continued. ‘If I had known what would happen, I would have tried my best to stop them. I should have known that marrying into the Zellwegers wouldn’t be easy. How could Graham, who was not yet the head of the family, protect your mother?”
Although Lynette was extraordinary, she had no social status or standing, and the
Zellwegers looked down on her. They would not let Graham marry her.
Danika didn’t know the details of what happened back then as Graham never told her about it in detail, only briefly mentioning it. Nonetheless, she could understand him. It must be painful for him to even think about her. After all, he failed to protect the woman he loved.
“I heard your father is looking for her?’ Harvey asked.
Danika nodded. “Yes, but there are no leads.”
“As expected. When I first met your mother, I also had people investigate her, but nothing could be found.’ After all, he was going to introduce her to his son, so he had to investigate her in detail.
“Why are you telling me all this?” Danika looked at Harvey, wondering why
I Don’t Think I’ll Make It
“I don’t think I’ll make it. I’ve been lying in bed these past few days with fragments of the past swirling in my mind. Your mother is among them, and I remember when I first met her. I remember she was injured at the time as if she was running for her life. I felt something was wrong, but she refused to tell me anything, and later, she suddenly disappeared.” Harvey sighed in regret and sorrow.
“Injured?” Danika was surprised. That was new information.
“I’m telling you all this because I hope you won’t give up on finding her. I always felt that something had happened to her, which is why she couldn’t come to you.’
Although it was only his speculation, it was not impossible given the situation he had observed.
Danika understood him. Nodding, she said, ‘Don’t worry, she’s my mother, and I will find her.”
She now had a different attitude toward the matter. Perhaps, she should be like her father and do whatever it takes to find her. What if her mother had really been suffering all these years?
Harvey didn’t say anything more after that. Claiming he was a little tired, he asked
Danika to go out and call all the Spade family members in.
Danika did as she was told and sat on a long bench outside the ward, watching all the
Spade family members enter the room.
Soon after, she heard crying coming from inside the room. Regardless of how genuine the cries were, Danika knew one thing: Harvey had passed away.
When she raised her head, she saw Christopher walking out of the room, calmly making arrangements. He seemed out of place among the other grieving family members.
However, Danika knew he was sad but wouldn’t show it. He refused to allow the other
Spades to see his vulnerable side.
Danika stood up and walked over to him, unsure how to console him. In the end, all she could say was, “My condolences.”
“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” Christopher forced a smile.
He wasn’t fine, of course. Even though he had been mentally prepared for this day, he found that he wasn’t as strong as he had imagined.
“Is there anything I can help with?” Danika asked.
Christopher shook his head. “No, I can handle these people.”
The Spades had long been completely under his control, and even if they wanted to cause trouble, he wouldn’t give them the opportunity.
Seeing him so confident, Danika didn’t say anything. “Okay then, I…I’ll go back. Let me know when Mr. Spade’s funeral is.”
“Okay, if you can come to send Grandpa off, he will be very happy,” Christopher said to her.
Danika thought seeing Christopher doing well would probably be the only thing that would truly make Harvey happy. But she kept her thoughts to herself. When she waved goodbye and was about to leave, a pretty woman suddenly appeared in front of them.
“What happened to Grandpa, Christopher,” she asked.
Although she didn’t know what had happened yet, she heard the sound of crying coming from the ward and began to tear up.
Christopher turned to her and said softly, “Go inside and have a look.” Alexandra York was taken aback, afraid because there was a dead person inside the room.
Christopher saw her hesitation and chuckled softly, “Grandpa has passed away. If there’s nothing else, you can go back.’
“I’ll stay here with you,” Alexandra said. Although afraid to go inside, she didn’t want to leave and knew she should stay by Christopher’s side.
Christopher wanted to refuse, but Alexandra had already turned her attention to
Danika.
Looking at Danika, she asked, ‘Who is this?”
