But Eustace remained calm.He chuckled, “If you won’t let her go, then let’s all die together today, shall we?”
He was confident he could kill the old man before anyone even pressed their triggers. His only regret would be that he couldn’t save Danika.
Eustace met Danika’s gaze, seeing how fearless she was right now.
Evidently, she had faith in Eustace’s decision.
She even smiled at Eustace, signaling his trust in him.
Right before anyone could press their triggers, another group of men swarmed around Zeke’s guards.
Leading them was Evan himself, who glared at Zeke and barked out, “Let Danika go.”
Zeke eyed him, having realized he had underestimated the young man.
At most, he only imagined Evan would marry into the Zellwegers.
Looks like he was a far more complicated character than that.
I’ll Take Care of Them
“Evan?!”
Danika gaped in shock upon seeing Evan appear, especially with this gang of men.
“Something is up,” she thought.
There was even some foreign blood among those men.
The calmest person was Eustace. He was the one who’d notified Evan of this series of events, and they’d made their necessary preparations for whatever they would face.
Eustace also had a feeling that Evan would still have figured it out on his own if he hadn’t notified him, so he might as well tell him to boost their chances of saving Danika.
Evan shot Danika a reassuring look.
“Don’t worry.I’ll make sure you’re safe.”
But that was the least of Danika’s concerns right now.
Why was Evan leading all these men? Hadn’t he just been busy with his studies and work like he told her? Sadly, now was not the time for those questions.
Zeke narrowed his eyes on Evan, realizing something.
“You were the one behind Xavier’s death, weren’t you?”
Evan neither confirmed nor denied it, which was enough assent in the old man’s eyes.
Zeke’s expression instantly turned steely, flitting between Evan and Eustace as he hissed, “So this is your accomplice.”
No wonder he was unable to find any information on how those men were connected to Eustace.
Turns out Eustace had found an accomplice in someone Zeke would never have guessed.
“I don’t care what grudge you have against Eustace Quincey, just let Danika go, and you can have him to yourself to do as you please,”
Evan grunted out.
One less rival, one less chance of losing Danika.
“You really think you can get away with killing my son?”
How could Zeke ever forgive himself for not avenging his son’s death? Evan scoffed nonchalantly.
“Do you really think you can take on all my men? Or are you ready to risk your own neck for this?”
The old man would be the first to die if conflict broke out.
Zeke merely gave his butler a glance before the man shot out a flare toward the sky.
It had already erupted into sparks before either Eustace or Evan could do anything.
They shot one another a look.
This could only mean Zeke had reinforcements nearby, and they would soon flood the premises.
Sure enough, another group of men soon encircled Evan’s, now forming a three-layer gunfight cake.
Luke strode over, gun propped up by his shoulder.
“You won’t get out of here alive, Eustace!” he sneered at the man.
“Take shelter in the mansion first, Grandad.I’ll take care of them,” he then said to Zeke, absolutely bristling with excitement.
There was very little chance they’d lose.
He’d sent his bullets into Eustace’s skull if it was the last thing he did.
Zeke nodded, telling him to be careful before retreating into the building.
Neither Eustace nor Evan stopped him, as they couldn’t risk Danika’s life, as she had been dragged back into the mansion.
Idiot
After Zeke and Danika had gone back into the building, Luke cocked the gun up, grinning in glee as he gazed at Eustace.
“Start groveling, and I just might give you a quick death, Eustace!”
Eustace glared at him, cursing, “Fucking idiot.”
“What did you say?!”
Luke yelled, not expecting Eustace to be so arrogant even at a time like this.Wasn’t he worried he’d die? Eustace ignored him, turning to Evan instead.
“Truce?”
“Truce.” Evan nodded.
Better to bring Danika to safety first before getting Eustace to die.
Gunshots immediately rang out, and if not for one of Luke’s men pulling him to the side at the very last second, he would’ve instantly gotten hit.
“Fuck! Kill them all! Now!”
Luke roared.
War immediately broke out with casualties on both sides, though everyone stayed away from the mansion where Zeke and Danika were in.
Meanwhile, Danika listened to the gunfight outside while her heart stuttered with each bang.
Could Eustace and Evan escape from it unscathed? “Do you think Eustace will make it out alive today?”
Zeke suddenly asked.
Danika shot him a look.
“Of course.” She trusted Eustace.
“Hmm.Why do I feel otherwise?” Zeke chuckled.
If Eustace could survive that commotion outside, the Quinceys would never go to anyone else’s hands save for his.
“Is Stephanie in the other building?” Danika inquired.
“Yes.Why? Planning how to save her?”
Shouldn’t Danika be more worried about saving herself right now? “I’m sure no harm will come to her by your men, yes? She’s no extraordinary figure.”
Zeke didn’t answer that question, merely smiled.
Stephanie, on the other hand, was just as tense from hearing the gunshots outside the room.
What was happening, she thought frantically.
Why were there people shooting? She crept to the window and looked outside but saw nothing.
It seemed like the fight was limited to the space on the other side of the premises.
She gritted her teeth and wondered if the guards outside her door had left too. She’d be able to escape then.
With that in mind, she went to open the door.
“What are you doing?”
One of the guards standing outside questioned, his expression menacing.
Stephanie cleared her throat.
“What’s going on? I keep on hearing gunshots.”
