Filed to story: Alpha’s Regret After His Pregnant Luna’s Death (Evelyn & Declan)
Evelyn’s POV
The receptionist hung up, and the change in her tone was instant. She was very cautious, almost afraid of saying the wrong thing to me.”I’m sorry, Alpha Declan isn’t in the office today.”
I frowned, my wolf pricking her ears immediately.
Declan? Not in the office?
Yeah, right.
In every memory I had, Declan Crawford practically lived here. The rest of the staff would be packing up, heading home to their families, while he was still drowning in files. Even at home, he’d shut himself in the study until hours past midnight.
A man like that didn’t”take a day off.”
Not unless something was wrong.
Or he was hiding.
A bitter laugh escaped me before I could stop it.”He better not be hiding.”
My fingers were steady as I reached into my bag and handed the envelope to the receptionist. It was the divorce papers, the end of Declan and me. The end of the life I once thought we’d build together.
“Please give this to him,” I said.”Once he has signed, have someone contact me to pick it up.”
I asked for a sticky note, keeping my expression neutral even though my wolf paced just beneath my skin. The moment the paper touched my hand, I wrote down a number, Peter’s number, not mine.
I’d already left my contact info with the hospital when Lana got sick. If Declan started digging… if he followed that trail…
He’d find her.
And that could never happen.
I would never let it happen.
Not when everything could collapse with one little investigation.
Peter could handle the call. I’d explain evertthing to her later.
After writing the number, I turned and walked out, my heartbeat loud in my ears. My wolf was quiet, watching, sensing, feeling the tension in the air like static before a storm.
I could feel several pairs of eyes on me. They were curious, judging and whispering.
I lowered my gaze and headed toward the revolving doors, my mind a tangled mess of fear, regret, and determination.
My phone buzzed a moment later.
Peter: Evelyn, Lana just fell asleep. I asked a female colleague from the legal team to watch her for a bit. Something urgent came up at Crawford Group. I’ve got to head in for a quick meeting.
His WhatsApp message came quickly, apologetic and hurried.
I typed back: Got it. Go ahead.
He didn’t say more, and I didn’t press. That was how we worked, it was best that way.
But the moment I stepped outside, unease rippled through me.
Leaving Lana with a colleague I barely knew made my wolf restless and protective.
She hated it.
Still… it was only for a moment.
And Peter was reliable. One of the few I trusted.
But as I reached the car door, something in my chest tightened.
Peter?.
Needed to come to Crawford Group, for an urgent meeting.
My heart started racing before I even understood why. My instincts were clawing at me, whispering danger.
I shook my head, trying to clear it. Stop. Don’t overthink.
Peter was an important part of Crawford Group now. If he had to go in, it was probably just some work issue.
He’d be fine.
He had to be.
“Let’s go,” I told the driver, settling into the seat as the wind brushed against my face.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly, terribly wrong.
Declan’s POV
Peter rushed into the top-floor conference room, breathing a little too fast-like he’d sprinted the whole way up. The moment he stepped inside, I could sense his unease and confusion.
I noticed everything, I always did.
A werewolf’s senses don’t miss a thing.
Normally, a high-level meeting at Crawford Group meant a room full of department heads, shareholders and legal team members.
But today, there were only three of us.
Collins, Peter and me.
The tension in Peter’s scent spiked the second he realized the room was nearly empty. His instincts were sharper when he was nervous, almost lupine in their own way.
Good. He should feel uneasy.
“Sit down,” I said, gesturing to the chair closest to me.
His eyes flicked to it and he sat.
He didn’t know why he’d been called in, but it was clear as day he knew something was wrong.
“Alpha Declan,” he said carefully as he sat down,”is there a problem with the company?”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I let my chin rest on my hand and studied him slowly. Letting my gaze drag across every line of his face, every change in his expression, every flicker of guilt or innocence in his scent.
No matter how calm he tried to act, the nervous thrum in his heartbeat betrayed him.
My stare darkened without my permission.
So… Evelyn wants a divorce because of him?
The thought hit like claws scraping across my bone, it was cold, sharp and violent.
Something inside me changed, an instinct older than reason, darker than logic. My wolf didn’t just stir… he snarled.
And then there was the child.
My jaw clenched so hard it hurt.
The air thickened around me, frost forming in the atmosphere as if the room recognized the change in my mood.
Collins stiffened at my side, trying and failing to hide the shiver that ran through him.
My wolf was pushing dangerously close to the surface. The alpha in me didn’t like unanswered questions. Didn’t like threats. And he sure as hell didn’t like the idea of Evelyn belonging to someone else.
Peter felt the tension immediately. I could smell the spike of adrenaline under his skin. His discomfort radiated off him, thick and sharp.
He glanced toward Collins like he expected backup.
But Collins, smart man that he was, averted his gaze instantly, pretending he hadn’t seen, heard, or noticed a damn thing.
He knew better than to interfere.
I leaned back in my chair, my eyes locked on Peter like a predator gauging his prey, my wolf silent and waiting.
And Peter…
He had no idea that this wasn’t a meeting.
It was an interrogation.
And I wouldn’t leave this room without answers.
