Me? Afraid of Her?
Danika didn’t retaliate against Paul’s argument. He had a ton of points, especially after what happened tonight.
When Paul thought Danika might relent, she said, “I’ll send Steph back home myself.”
So he ended up watching the two women leave in Evan’s car until they disappeared on the horizon. He held back the ball of anger in his chest, choosing to glare at Eustace instead.
“The hell is this? Can’t keep your woman in check?” Eustace scoffed, rolling his eyes.
“Why can’t you manage yours?”
“Hey!”
Paul yelled but didn’t know what else to say.
Eustace went up to him and patted his shoulder encouragingly.
“Calm down, man. We’re in the same boat here.”
“No way in hell! At least there’s no one else preying on Stephanie right now.”
The instant Paul said that, Eustace winced. It was true he wasn’t the only one setting his sights on Danika, what with Evan Clarke and Luke Quincey on her tail, as well as countless other men.
The thought alone was enough to send Eustace into a headache.
“C’mon.Drinks on me.”
As if reveling in Eustace’s pain, Paul’s mood immediately shifted for the better.
Eustace accepted the offer.
A drink or two might just be the trick for his headache.
Outside Brandon’s villa, Yvonne was silently panicking in Brandon’s car while he smoked a cigar.
“I really didn’t mean to, Brandon. It was just a slip of the tongue,” she tried clearing her name again.
She didn’t particularly like Brandon, but he was still the best she had currently, so she couldn’t just give up.Brandon gave her a disinterested look, snubbing out the cigar.
“Do you take me for an idiot?”
“Pack your bags and leave.Never show your face before me ever again.”
Yvonne gaped at him in shock.
“You’re kicking me out all because of Danika Zellweger?”
“Why else? You think you can stand up to her?” Brandon sneered.
Where did the woman get her guts to disrespect Danika? He didn’t know.
Yvonne gritted her teeth.
“I can’t, but you can’t just kick me out all because of one thing I said.”
“Be grateful I didn’t drown you in the middle of that river to redeem myself.”
Brandon knew exactly what that look Danika had given him earlier meant.
If he didn’t do something, she would, and soon, too.
The only reason Brandon was still letting Yvonne live was because of his particular affection for her.
Yvonne continued gaping at him like a goldfish. She’d thought she’d sink her claws into him enough to have him hooked on her, so this was way out of her expectations.
Only now did she realize just how difficult Brandon was to manipulate compared to those bums in Parrington. She started sobbing.
“I’m sorry, Brandon. Please don’t kick me out.I promise never to get in trouble with Danika Zellweger again.I won’t ever show up in front of her again! I really do love you, Brandon. I’d follow you till the ends of the Earth. Please let me stay.”
For a split second, Brandon showed hesitation.
Yvonne seized this chance like a tick on blood.
“Plus, you don’t have to kick me out just because Danika doesn’t like me.Aren’t you both the Elites in Bardoff City? You’re not afraid of her or something, right?”
“Me? Afraid of her?” Brandon scowled, successfully baited.
Mr.Love Guru
Yvonne’s scheme still worked in the end.
Brandon let her stay after what she said, unable to let himself and anyone else think he was afraid of Danika.
Meanwhile, Danika was sent home by Evan after dropping Stephanie off.
“Danika, about earlier tonight—“
“You should get some rest, Evan.” Danika smiled kindly.
“I know what you’re thinking, and I don’t blame you whatsoever, so please don’t worry about it.”
It was obvious Evan was still glum about not having run up to Danika’s rescue at the first second, but to her, it was a blessing in disguise, as she wouldn’t have known how to pay back the debt if something had happened to him.
As for Eustace, well…
“I know you don’t, but I do.”
Evan blamed himself for not having saved Danika before Eustace did.
Danika sighed.
“Can we drop this? It’s in the past now.I really just want to rest for the night.”
“Alright then.”
Evan nodded.
No point settling it right now when Danika was exhausted.
Danika nodded and left his car, going back into Zellweger Castle.
Evan could only stare longingly at her back, contemplating in silence.
The next day, having subdued the press and told the guests at the celebration to keep silent, Randy’s attempt at a suicide bombing at Danika’s celebration event didn’t make the headlines.
It would have a terrible impact on Zellweger Inc if that news went out, after all.
Still, to Danika’s surprise, what replaced the news headlines were Eustace and Blake’s breakup. She read the news, then did her investigation only to realize someone had pushed the news forward in order for it to be published. She sat back, wringing her hands together.
It was an excellent way to sweep what happened last night under the rug, but her situation with Eustace now would be more muddled with the news and him saving her last night. She contacted her PR department, only to realize in shock that they hadn’t been the ones responsible for pushing the news.
Who could it be, then? Meanwhile, Eustace and Paul were busy at Wagner Group, entirely unbothered by having drunk till they couldn’t stand the night before.
“Do we keep the news up? The Watkins’ are already starting to make them stop publication.” Paul asked Eustace on the couch.
Eustace nodded.
“Keep it going until the afternoon.”
“You really will do anything for Danika Zellweger,” Paul chuckled.
“You don’t even know if she’ll be grateful you used your own scandal to shield hers.” Eustace smiled.
“It doesn’t matter to me. I’m not looking for a repayment anyway.”
“Liar. You’re doing this in hopes that she’ll date you.”
“Alright, yes, Mr.Love Guru.Happy?”
Paul scowled, then changed the topic.
“How are things with the other Quinceys? Any improvement?”
Paul was, in truth, quite concerned about Eustace’s situation.Wagner Group had little to no chance of having the Quinceys as an opponent.
In This for Our Own Gain
“When have I ever not made an improvement?”
Eustace retorted, rolling his eyes.
Paul shook his head, laughing.
“Alright, fuck off then.I still have things to do.”
Eustace got up.He was about to leave anyway.
“Be patient with Stephanie.Do some gestures that are meaningful to her, and don’t force her to do anything again. You wouldn’t be able to take any of Danika’s retaliations right now.”
